Nanga Baji Urs Celebrations Promote Communal Harmony and Sufi Traditions

The seven-day annual Urs of Hazrat Syed Rasool Shah (RA), popularly known as Nanga Baji Sahib (RA), concluded on August 10, 2025, in Malangam village, Bandipora district, North Kashmir, drawing thousands of devotees from across Jammu and Kashmir and beyond, including areas like Rajouri, Doda, Udhampur, Poonch, Kishtwar, Kupwara, and Baramulla. The event, a significant spiritual and cultural occasion, was held at the residence of Syed Wilayat Shah, the grandson of Nanga Baji Sahib and a revered Sufi saint known as Baji Sahib of Malangam.

The Urs featured recitations of the Holy Quran, special prayers for peace and prosperity, and sermons by Sufi scholars, fostering a spiritual atmosphere. A customary flag was hoisted at the shrine, and a special Chadder was placed on the saint’s tomb during the concluding ceremony. A free langer (community kitchen) operated throughout, serving devotees and the underprivileged, with adjacent makeshift markets offering merchandise. The event also attracted non-Muslims, highlighting its message of communal harmony.

Syed Wilayat, who has organized the Urs for several years, commands a large following, and devotees believe their wishes are fulfilled by paying obeisance at the shrine. The event underscored the region’s Sufi traditions and strengthened social bonds across communities.
