Nana Patekar approached George Fernandes

When the Kargil conflict began, Patekar wanted to do more than simply express support for the armed forces.

According to accounts of his experience, he initially approached senior military officials about joining the troops but was told that special permission was required.

He then contacted the then Defence Minister George Fernandes.

Patekar later recalled explaining his previous military training and shooting experience to Fernandes. The Defence Minister eventually gave him permission to travel to the conflict zone. Hindustan Times

The demanding conditions also had a major physical impact on the actor.

Patekar later recalled that he weighed around 76 kg when he reached Srinagar, but his weight had fallen to approximately 56 kg by the time he returned.

A different side of Nana Patekar

Patekar’s connection with the Army was not limited to his famous role in Prahaar. His experience during the Kargil conflict became a real-life chapter that remained relatively unknown to many of his fans for years.

In a 2024 interview, he spoke about becoming part of the Quick Reaction Team and said that he felt he could at least do something for the country. The Indian Express

His Kargil experience adds another dimension to the legacy of an actor whose career was built on powerful performances, particularly in films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Tiranga and Ab Tak Chhappan.

For Nana Patekar, patriotism was not only something he portrayed on screen—it was also an experience he chose to live.
