Residents in Srinagar have expressed concern over the rising Mutton Prices in local markets ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, saying the increase is adding pressure on household budgets.
Consumers said the difference of Rs 50 per kilogram may seem small, but it becomes a burden for families already struggling with high food prices.
“Eid is approaching and people need to buy meat for celebrations, but traders are taking advantage of the situation,” said a local resident in Srinagar. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
No Immediate Response From Officials
Officials from the concerned government departments were not immediately available for comment on the allegations of overpricing in the markets.
Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, is expected to be celebrated later this month depending on the sighting of the moon.
Dealers’ Association Calls for Strict Action
Meanwhile, Mehraj Uddin Ganie, president of the All Jammu and Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association, described reports of mutton being sold at Rs 800 per kilogram as “unfortunate”.
He said strict action should be taken against traders who sell meat above the officially fixed rate.
“If anyone is selling mutton above the official rate, strict action should be taken and such shops must be sealed,” Ganie said.
Dealers Accuse Government of Inaction
Ganie also criticised the administration, claiming that authorities had not held any meeting with mutton dealers before Ramadan this year.
According to him, such meetings used to be organised earlier to discuss supply and price regulation.
“Earlier, meetings were held with the administration before Ramadan to discuss rates and supply, but this year no such meeting was convened. It shows the government’s lack of seriousness on the issue,” he said.
He further urged authorities to strengthen market monitoring to prevent overcharging and ensure that consumers are not exploited during the festive season.
