Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Says Authorities Pressuring Him to Alter X Handle After Hurriyat Ban

Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday said he was being pressured by authorities for some time to make changes to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, failing which his account would be taken down.

In a statement, Mirwaiz said the pressure stemmed from the ban imposed on all constituents of the Hurriyat Conference, including the Awami Action Committee (AAC) that he heads, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), thereby rendering Hurriyat a banned organisation.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

“For some time now, I was being pressed by the authorities to make changes to my X handle as Hurriyat chairman, failing which they would take down my handle,” he said.

Mirwaiz said that at a time when public space and avenues of communication stand severely restricted, the social media platform remains among the very few means available to him to reach out to people, share his views on issues, and communicate with the outside world.
