Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a prominent religious and separatist leader in Kashmir, has strongly condemned the recent seizure of over 3,500 kilograms of rotten, unlabelled, and allegedly illegal meat by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) across the region. Speaking during his Friday sermon at Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid, he described the incident as a “moral and religious betrayal” and “zulm” (grave injustice), emphasizing that supplying haram or hazardous food violates Islamic principles, public trust, and legal standards. He demanded swift legal action and strict punishment for those responsible, highlighting concerns about whether the meat was from permissible animals or carrion (maytah), which is prohibited in Islam. Mirwaiz called for accountability from authorities and urged societal introspection to address moral decay driven by greed and profiteering. He also commended vigilant citizens for exposing the scandal. Authorities have initiated inspections of wholesale and retail outlets, hotels, and eateries to prevent further distribution of rotten meat
