Kashmiri writer Dr Showkat Shifa proudly represented Jammu and Kashmir at the Sahitya Akademi’s Annual Festival of Letters, held in New Delhi from March 30 to April 4.
The national literary event was organised by the Sahitya Akademi under the Ministry of Culture. It brought together more than 700 writers and scholars from across India, representing over 90 languages. Around 100 sessions were held during the multi-day festival. This year’s theme was “Indian Literature: The Cradle of Cultures”, highlighting the rich diversity and shared heritage of literature across the country.
Dr Shifa, who belongs to Anantnag district in south Kashmir, took part as a panellist in a session titled “Healing Sounds – The Soothing Power of Poetry” on April 3.
The discussion focused on how poetry helps express human emotions such as love, hope, sorrow and peace. Speakers explored how words can comfort people and bring emotional healing in difficult times.
His participation has been widely appreciated in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Many locals described it as a proud and important achievement for the region.
The Sahitya Akademi’s Annual Festival of Letters is considered one of India’s most important literary events. It provides a platform for writers to share ideas, promote languages, and celebrate the country’s cultural richness.
Officials said that Dr Showkat Shifa is expected to return to Kashmir on Saturday.
