Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, Athawale said the final decision on the restoration of statehood rests with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. His remarks did not provide a specific date or confirm that the restoration was imminent.
Athawale Says He Will Convey Public Sentiment
Athawale referred to assurances previously given by the Central Government in Parliament regarding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He said he would convey the views and expectations of the people of the Union Territory to the central leadership after returning to New Delhi.
Restoration of statehood remains a significant political demand in Jammu and Kashmir. Political leaders and sections of the public have repeatedly called for clarity on the government’s plans and the timeline for the change.
However, Athawale’s latest remarks did not establish when statehood would be restored, leaving the timing dependent on a future decision by the Centre.
Centre’s Focus on Investment and Development
The Union Minister also spoke about efforts to promote economic development, attract private investment and create employment opportunities in Jammu and Kashmir.
He said investment initiatives were under way, with substantial commitments reportedly made towards infrastructure and development projects.
While the Centre continues to emphasise development in the Union Territory, the restoration of statehood remains a separate and unresolved political issue. Athawale’s comments reaffirmed the government’s stated commitment but offered no confirmed timeline for the move.
