Deputy Director Fire and Emergency Services, Dr Mir Aqib Hussain, while confirming the incident, said that the firefighters were on the ground dousing the flames and simultaneously searching the affected houses to ensure there was no loss of life.
He further said that the fire spread widely due to heavy stocking of old clothes and blanket items within the residential structures that were being used as godowns. Illegal parking of public vehicles on the roadsides during night hours and multiple blasts of LPG cylinders made the firefighting operation even more challenging.
After an intense and prolonged operation, officials confirmed that the fire was finally brought under control at around 6:00 AM following one of the toughest firefighting operations in recent times.
Dr Hussain added that the operation was closely monitored by himself, Mobilizing Officer Aijaz Ahmad Shah, and DFO Headquarters Command Srinagar.
No loss of life or injuries has been reported in the incident. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
