Parwaz was serving a life sentence following his conviction in a 2018 gang-rape case. His death has drawn attention to his long legal battle over alleged hate speech by Adityanath and the circumstances surrounding his imprisonment.
Parvez Parwaz’s Death in Gorakhpur Jail
According to reports citing jail authorities, Parwaz’s health deteriorated late on Saturday night after he experienced severe breathing difficulties.
He reportedly suffered from existing health conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure. Gorakhpur Jail Superintendent V.K. Pandey said Parwaz was taken to the district hospital for emergency treatment.
He died during treatment at around 2:50 am on Sunday, according to the reports.
His death has prompted questions among supporters and civil liberties activists about the medical care provided to him in custody. Calls for an independent inquiry have also emerged, although the available reports do not establish that his death resulted from any wrongdoing.
Legal Battle Against Yogi Adityanath
Parwaz came to public attention after pursuing legal action over alleged hate speech by Yogi Adityanath during communal tensions in Gorakhpur in 2007.
At the time, Adityanath was a Member of Parliament representing Gorakhpur. Parwaz approached the Allahabad High Court seeking action over allegations that a speech by Adityanath had contributed to communal violence.
Parwaz and his colleague Asad Hayat continued their legal efforts after the Uttar Pradesh government refused permission to prosecute Adityanath. The refusal was subsequently challenged in court, but the legal challenge did not succeed.
The dispute became a significant part of Parwaz’s public profile. However, the allegations against Adityanath were not established through a successful prosecution.
Life Sentence in the 2018 Gang-Rape Case
Parwaz’s life changed after he was arrested in September 2018 in connection with a gang-rape allegation.
A woman had accused Parwaz and another man, Mehmood, also known as Jumman Baba, of raping her in June 2018.
In July 2020, a Gorakhpur court convicted both men and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The court also imposed fines on the two convicted men.
Parwaz denied the allegations and maintained that he had been falsely implicated. His supporters argued that the prosecution was politically motivated because of his legal campaign against Adityanath. However, the claim of political retaliation has not been established as a proven fact.
In 2023, the Allahabad High Court granted Parwaz bail and ordered that his sentence be kept in abeyance while his appeal was considered. Later reports said he was in jail when he died in October 2026.
Questions Following His Death
Parwaz’s death has renewed discussion about prison healthcare, the treatment of inmates and the need for transparency when a person dies in custody.
Supporters and civil rights activists have called for a clear account of the medical treatment he received and the events leading to his death.
The circumstances of his final hours, including whether his treatment was adequate, require confirmation through official records and any inquiry conducted by the authorities.
Parwaz’s life involved two major legal controversies: his campaign seeking action over alleged hate speech and his own conviction in a serious criminal case. Both remain important to understanding his public profile.
Any further investigation into his death should establish the medical facts and circumstances independently, without treating allegations of political retaliation or custodial wrongdoing as proven before the evidence is examined.
