New Delhi: A political confrontation during an opposition protest in the national capital turned tense on Thursday after a young man from Srinagar, identified as Faheem Nazir, alleged that he was assaulted by people at the protest site after expressing support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The incident took place in Connaught Place, where opposition leaders and workers had gathered amid continuing protests against the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Videos from the spot circulated on social media and showed a heated confrontation involving Nazir and several people near the protest venue. However, the full sequence of events and the circumstances that led to the physical confrontation could not be independently established from the available footage. ABP Live English
Who Is Faheem Nazir?
Nazir identified himself as a resident of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, and said he was a supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He also maintained that he was not a member of any political party and had come to the protest site to express his views and question the opposition’s allegations concerning elections, electronic voting machines and the SIR exercise.
According to reports, Nazir was carrying posters and raising slogans in support of Modi while questioning the opposition’s claims of electoral irregularities. ABP Live English
How the Confrontation Started
According to media reports, Nazir’s presence and slogans led to a confrontation with people supporting the opposition.
Some reports said he was accused of making abusive remarks against Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. Nazir strongly rejected the allegation.
He told reporters that he had not abused Rahul Gandhi and challenged those making the accusation to produce video footage proving that he had used abusive language. He said he would apologise if such evidence was shown. ABP Live English
The confrontation then reportedly became physical, with Nazir alleging that his poster was torn and that he was beaten or manhandled.
A video from the incident shows a group of people surrounding Nazir during the confrontation. Several people intervened as the situation became increasingly tense. Reports said police personnel were also present in the area.
Nazir: “I Did Not Abuse Rahul Gandhi”
Speaking to journalists after the incident, Nazir denied provoking the protesters through abusive language.
He said he had only expressed his political opinion and questioned whether a citizen could be attacked for supporting a particular political leader.
Nazir repeatedly maintained that he had not abused Rahul Gandhi and said that cameras at the scene could establish what had actually happened.
He also questioned the opposition’s criticism of electronic voting machines and electoral processes, arguing that similar machines had been used during elections in which Congress had won.
His comments reflected his broader criticism of the opposition’s ongoing campaign over alleged electoral irregularities. ABP Live English
Nazir Questions Opposition’s “Vote Theft” Claims
During his interaction with the media, Nazir also questioned the opposition’s allegations of “vote theft”.
He argued that if electronic voting machines were responsible for electoral problems, questions should also have been raised during elections in which opposition parties performed well.
His comments came as the INDIA bloc continued its campaign against the Election Commission and demanded greater accountability over the SIR process.
Nazir said he had come to the protest because he wanted to challenge what he described as allegations being made against the electoral system.
Opposition Protest Over SIR
The incident occurred against the backdrop of several days of opposition demonstrations in Delhi.
Congress and other INDIA bloc parties have been protesting against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, raising concerns over the process and demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
The opposition has alleged that the revision could result in eligible voters being excluded from electoral rolls. The Election Commission has defended its electoral procedures, while the political dispute over the issue continues.
On Wednesday, opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained following demonstrations in Delhi after tensions rose between protesters and police. The protests continued on Thursday. Dainik Bhaskar | Hindi News
BJP Reacts to the Incident
The confrontation involving Nazir has also become part of the wider political battle between the BJP and Congress.
During a BJP press conference, party spokesperson Siddharth Yadav criticised Congress over the incident and questioned the conduct of opposition protesters.
The BJP has presented the episode as an example of intolerance towards political dissent. These statements, however, are part of the ongoing political dispute, and the allegations made by rival parties should be treated as political claims unless independently established. ABP Live English
Incident Sparks Debate Over Political Expression
The alleged assault has triggered a wider debate over political expression and the conduct of protesters.
The confrontation is particularly significant because Nazir says he was targeted after expressing support for a political leader who is opposed by those participating in the demonstration.
At the same time, allegations that he verbally abused Rahul Gandhi remain disputed. Nazir has denied the allegation and called for video evidence to establish what he actually said.
The available footage shows the confrontation but does not, by itself, establish every detail of what happened before the physical altercation.
A Fresh Flashpoint Amid Rising Political Tensions
The Faheem Nazir incident has added another flashpoint to an already tense political atmosphere in Delhi.
With opposition parties continuing their protests over SIR and the Election Commission, and the BJP attacking the opposition over its demonstrations, the confrontation has quickly become part of the wider political debate.
For now, the central allegations remain contested: Nazir says he was assaulted for expressing his political views, while reports say protesters accused him of making provocative or abusive remarks against Rahul Gandhi. A complete account would require further investigation and verification of the events leading up to the confrontation. ABP Live English
