Sunil Sharma Questions J&K Statehood Process and Slams Omar Abdullah Government

The Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislature, Sunil Sharma, on Wednesday questioned the process of restoring statehood to J&K and criticised the government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Speaking to reporters, Sharma said he believes that statehood will eventually be restored to Jammu and Kashmir. However, he said he was unsure whether the process had started after consulting the Chief Minister.

“We also believe that J&K statehood will return. But whether it will come after Omar Abdullah Sahib’s consent, I do not know,” Sharma said. He added that he was not aware if consultations with the Centre had begun, as claimed by the Chief Minister. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Omar Abdullah had earlier stated that the process of restoring statehood was underway and that the government was in talks with the Central government.

Sharma also alleged that people from different sections of society were facing difficulties under the current government. He claimed that not only retirees but also serving employees were struggling.

“Employees who want to withdraw their GP Fund for their children’s marriages are standing in long queues,” he said. Sharma pointed out that the Finance Department is headed by the Chief Minister himself. He added that while the Chief Minister admits that the Government of India is providing financial support to J&K, the results are not visible on the ground.

Taking a further dig at the government, Sharma said it lacked vision and purpose. He accused the leadership of focusing on leisure activities instead of governance.

He also raised concerns about capital expenditure, saying it had not increased. According to him, this money could have been used to create jobs. Sharma claimed that promises of providing jobs to unemployed youth within three months had not been fulfilled. He further alleged that some jobs had been outsourced to a private company that could even face blacklisting.

Sharma also claimed that around 80 per cent of the funds received from the Government of India were being spent on revenue expenditure. Despite this, he said retirees and current employees were still waiting for payments.

“There is total chaos. There is no financial transparency, and the people of J&K will have to pay a heavy price,” he said.

Responding to a question about National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, Sharma alleged that his statements often change. He claimed that people could not rely on his track record.

The political debate over J&K’s statehood and governance continues as leaders trade sharp remarks over financial management, jobs and transparency.
