“Neither Jammu nor Kashmir can be separated from each other. It would be like separating the head from the body — with Jammu as the head and Kashmir as the torso,” Abdullah said.

Response to BJP Leader’s Demand

Farooq Abdullah’s remarks came after Sham Lal Sharma, a BJP Member of Legislative Assembly, recently sparked controversy by demanding separate statehood for the Jammu region, citing alleged discrimination.

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party later distanced itself from the statement. BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir president Sat Sharma clarified that the demand does not reflect the party’s official stand.

Comments on Ladakh

Abdullah also claimed that people in Ladakh want to return to the fold of Jammu and Kashmir, suggesting dissatisfaction after the region was separated as a Union Territory.

In 2019, the BJP-led central government revoked Article 370, ending the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The erstwhile state was then bifurcated into two Union Territories:

  • Jammu and Kashmir
  • Ladakh

Interaction With Local Traders

During his visit, Farooq Abdullah was accompanied by senior party leaders, including:

  • Rattan Lal Gupta, Jammu provincial president
  • Vijay Lochan, Chairman, Scheduled Caste Cell

He interacted with members of the Narwal Fruit Mandi Association, listened to their concerns and assured them that their issues would be addressed.

Assurance on Governance

Abdullah said the National Conference–led government in the Union Territory is working for the welfare of the people and has taken several initiatives over the past year.

“There is no need to worry. All the promises made to the people will be fulfilled,” he said.
