Snowfall Shuts Jammu–Srinagar Highway, Flights Suspended as Weather Worsens Across Jammu and Kashmir

The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway was closed on Friday after heavy rain and snowfall made road conditions unsafe, officials said. Traffic was also halted at Jakhani Chowk in Udhampur as a precautionary step.

Authorities said that due to continuous rain and snow accumulation up to the Ramsoo area, all types of vehicles were stopped at safer locations along NH-44. Slippery roads and reduced visibility prompted the decision to prevent accidents.

Snowfall also caused major disruption to air travel. Srinagar Airport announced the cancellation of several flights because of ongoing snowfall and a NOTAM issued at Delhi Airport.

IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory, stating that flight operations in Srinagar have been temporarily suspended. The airline warned passengers about possible delays and advised them to check flight status before heading to the airport.

In a post on X, IndiGo said snowfall had forced a temporary halt to both landings and take-offs in Srinagar. The airline added that boarding may be completed in advance so flights can depart quickly once weather conditions improve. Passengers were advised to use rebooking or refund options if their flights were affected.

Srinagar Airport also shared an update on social media, confirming that multiple flights to and from the airport had been cancelled due to snowfall and the Delhi NOTAM. Passengers were urged to stay in touch with their airlines for the latest updates.

Meanwhile, several parts of Jammu city witnessed rainfall, with cold and chilly conditions prevailing throughout the day.

After nearly three months of dry weather, snowfall finally began in the plains and upper reaches of Doda’s Bhalesa area and nearby regions from midnight. Local residents expressed relief and happiness as the long-awaited snow returned.

In a separate weather update, the India Meteorological Department said that parts of Punjab and Haryana are also likely to witness thunderstorms, lightning, moderate rain and gusty winds during the morning hours.

Authorities advised travellers to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary movement, and regularly check weather and traffic updates before planning journeys.
