Delhi Police Commissioner Replaced After Attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at Residence

A day after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was physically attacked during a public meeting at her residence, the Union Home Ministry has replaced Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh with senior IPS officer Satish Golcha.

SBK Singh, a 1988 batch IPS officer from the AGMUT cadre and currently Director General of Home Guards, had taken additional charge as the Commissioner only on August 1. His removal comes amid sharp criticism over security lapses following the incident.

Satish Golcha, a 1992 batch officer from the same cadre, has held several key positions in the Delhi Police, including Deputy Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, and Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order & Intelligence). He was Special Commissioner during the 2020 North East Delhi riots and was appointed Director General (Prisons) in April last year.

The change in leadership comes after a major security breach on Wednesday, when a man identified as Rajesh Sakariya from Rajkot, Gujarat, attacked CM Gupta during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ at her Shalimar Bagh residence. CCTV footage later revealed that Sakariya had conducted a recce of the residence before the assault.

Sakariya’s mother, Bhanu, told reporters that her son was upset over the Supreme Court’s ruling to move stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to shelters. “He loves dogs and was angry over the order. He left for Delhi soon after. We don’t know anything else,” she said.

Police have booked Sakariya under several charges, including attempt to murder.

Meanwhile, Ms Gupta, who suffered injuries to her hand, shoulder, and head, assured supporters that the incident would not weaken her spirit. In a post on X, she wrote:
“Such attacks can never break my resolve to serve the public. I will continue ‘Jan Sunwai’ with more energy and dedication than ever before. Your trust and support is my biggest strength.”
