In a significant achievement towards ensuring justice for victims of sexual offences, Shopian Police has secured the conviction of two accused involved in the sexual assault of a minor girl. After a detailed trial, the Hon’ble Principal Sessions Judge Shopian pronounced judgment today, convicting Yawer Ahmad Sheikh, son of Gh. Mohammad Sheikh, and Mehraj Ahmad Dar, son of Ab. Gaffar Dar, both residents of Khawajapora Chitragam, Shopian.
Upon deliberation on the quantum of punishment, the Hon’ble Court awarded the following sentences:
Convict No.1 – Yawer Ahmad Sheikh:
Under Section 363 IPC: Rigorous Imprisonment for 5 years and a fine of ₹10,000, and in default of payment of fine, Simple Imprisonment for one month.
Under Section 4 of the POCSO Act: Rigorous Imprisonment for 10 years and a fine of ₹20,000, and in default of payment of fine, Simple Imprisonment for three months.
Both sentences shall run concurrently, making the effective sentence 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Convict No.2 – Mehraj Ahmad Dar:
The Court sentenced him to Rigorous Imprisonment for 5 years and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 for his role in the offence.
This conviction stands as a testament to the dedicated investigation and professional prosecution carried out by Shopian Police in ensuring justice for the minor victim.
