Farooq Abdullah Calls Chenab–Pir Panchal Division Proposal A ‘Dixon Plan’, Rejects Any Further Breakup Of J&K

A day after former Chief Minister and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti suggested creating separate divisions for the Chenab and Pir Panchal regions, former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday strongly criticised the idea, calling it the old Dixon Plan.

Speaking to reporters, the National Conference president said the proposal was not new and had its roots in a historical plan aimed at dividing the region. “It is a Dixon Plan. You may not know it. The Dixon Plan is an old proposal which talked about division on the basis of the Chenab River, creating a Greater Kashmir Valley on one side and separating the other part,” Farooq Abdullah said. He made these remarks while responding to Mehbooba Mufti’s demand for separate administrative divisions for the Chenab and Pir Panchal areas.

Farooq Abdullah said his party has always opposed the division of Jammu and Kashmir, including the separation of Ladakh from the erstwhile state.

Questioning the outcome of Ladakh’s separation, he said, “What benefit have the people of Ladakh got from this move? Today, Ladakhis themselves are demanding reunification and are saying they do not want Union Territory status.”

He warned that there are forces trying to break Jammu and Kashmir further, but said such attempts would not succeed. “Many people want to divide this state, but they will not succeed in their designs,” he added.

The remarks have added fresh political heat to the ongoing debate over regional divisions and the future administrative structure of Jammu and Kashmir.
