Massive Fire Guts 8-10 Houses in Srinagar’s Chattabal Bhagyas Area Early Thursday Morning

A huge fire ripped through several homes in the Bhagyas area of Chattabal, Srinagar, early this morning (Thursday, 5 February). The blaze caused major damage, leaving families devastated in this tightly packed old neighbourhood.

Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) got the first distress call at around 6:31 am to their control room in Batamaloo. Within just a minute, the nearest fire tender raced from Safakadal station. Because the area is so crowded with narrow lanes and attached houses, more teams quickly joined from headquarters, Syed Hameed Pora, Maharaj Gunj, and Babdemb. When firefighters arrived, they found three or four houses already fully ablaze. Things got worse fast when two or three LPG cylinders exploded with loud bangs, sending flames jumping to nearby homes. In the end, eight to ten residential houses were completely gutted or badly damaged.

After a tough fight, the teams managed to bring the fire under control. They’re now doing cooling operations to make sure it doesn’t flare up again.

The operation was led on the ground by Incharge Fire Station Safakadal, Aadil Zargar, with support from divisional officers and overseen by Deputy Director Dr. Mir Aqib Hussain and Mobilising Officer Aijaz Ahmad Shah.

ADGP Fire and Emergency Services Alok Kumar (IPS) has urged everyone to be extra careful, especially at night. He reminded people not to leave electrical gadgets or heaters on unattended — simple steps like that can prevent these heartbreaking incidents.

The exact cause of the fire isn’t known yet — investigators are looking into it. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far, but the loss of homes in winter is tough for the affected families.

These fires are sadly common in Srinagar’s older, congested areas where wooden structures and close buildings make things spread quickly. Stay safe out there, and let’s hope authorities get to the bottom of what started this one soon. If you’re in the area or know anyone affected, thoughts are with them. Updates as more details come in.
