Minister Javed Ahmed Rana Calls for Conservation of Rare Species in Pir Panjal

Javed Ahmed Rana

Minister for Forest, Ecology & Environment, Javed Ahmed Rana, today impressed upon the officers of Wildlife department to undertake innovative conservation measures for protection of rare and endangered species, that have been recently spotted in the Pir Panjal region.

He issued these directions during his visit to the Pir Panjal region where he discussed various conservation measures with the officers of the wildlife department.

Wildlife Protection (Poonch-Rajouri) had last year captured Brandt’s Hedgehog from Nowshera and Shachera. They were released into the natural habitat after taking proper sampling and completing all other studies. They had also confirmed the presence of smooth coated Otter from Ghambir Mughlian, Rajouri in October 2024 and critically endangered Pangolin in January 2025 from Nowshera.

The Minister said that these findings are a great news for the wildlife department and calls for their protection and conservation.

“We need to take conservation steps in these areas where biodiversity supports Brandt’s Hedgehog, Pangolin, Otters and other rare and endangered species,” the minister said.

He called upon the officers to evaluate the activities that threaten the biodiversity and research possible solutions that weigh environmental, economic and social concerns. He said that environmental conservation has become a global priority due to the growing concerns of climate change and increasing pollution.

“To restore environmental balance, it is crucial to adopt a more sensitive approach toward nature and wildlife conservation as each species has an important role to perform in the ecosystem. If we want to protect them we have maintain a fine balance between human development and wildlife conservation,” he added.

Rana said that co-existence of varied life forms is indispensable to maintain a fine balance in the ecosystems and conservation efforts included status surveys, research, monitoring, development of conservation action plans and advocacy. He further directed the wildlife warden to carry out a population estimation of the animals in the particular area and to survey other areas for their presence.

“Population assessments provide the foundation for evaluating the status and threats to endangered species and plan and implement species recovery and conservation plans accordingly,” he added.

Rana also called for involvement of local communities in the conservation of endangered species and their habitats. These communities play a significant role in shielding endangered species from hunting, while protecting the places these animals live, he said.

He further called for strengthening enforcement mechanisms like wildlife monitoring activities, mitigating human-wildlife conflict which form an integral part of conservation achievements.

“There is need to design, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity,” he said.

Rana also praised the efforts of the field staff in discovering these rare species in the dense forests.

Wildlife Warden, Amit Sharma, a wildlife expert, said that the sightings of these rare species has sparked excitement among wildlife enthusiasts, experts and renewed interest in the region’s ecosystem. He said that the department will be conducting population census and research on these species to ensure their conservation and protection in harmony with nature.

Omar Abdullah Stresses Need for Statehood to Resolve Jammu and Kashmir Issues

Omar Abdullah Stresses

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday raised concerns over governance under the Union Territory (UT) framework and stressed that certain issues affecting the people could only be effectively resolved under a state administration and they are “trying to achieve the status of a state”

“Why am I repeatedly stressing about (the restoration) of statehood? I know there are many issues due to which people are troubled, but the resolution of those issues cannot be made under the UT administration. For this, we need to get the status of a state. Tasks which can be done as a UT will be done, and for the other tasks which can be done under state administration, we are trying to achieve the status of a state.”

On allegations of opposition parties that promises made during the election campaign were not being implemented CM said, “The (election) manifesto was not for 5 days or 5 weeks, but 5 years. We know the promises we have made to the public and how to fulfil them. Since the first day, we have said that the tasks we have to do as UT, we will do them.”

Further, when asked about the upcoming Budget Abdullah refrained from commenting on it ahead of its official presentation in the Legislative Assembly.

Abdullah maintained that it was the government’s responsibility to introduce the Budget in the House before any discussions could take place.

“I will not talk about the Budget as it is the government’s duty to present the Budget first in the Assembly. All the things that will be included in the Budget will become clear before the Assembly when it is presented on March 7…”

Earlier in the day, CM Abdullah extended his support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign against obesity, urging wider participation to combat lifestyle-related health risks on Monday.

Taking to X, Abdullah emphasized the adverse health effects of obesity, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, strokes, respiratory issues, and mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.

“I’m very happy to join the campaign against obesity launched by PM @narendramodi ji. Obesity causes a number of lifestyle-related health issues like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, strokes & breathing problems not to mention mental health conditions like anxiety & depression,” he posted.

“Today I’m nominating these 10 people to join the PM’s campaign against obesity & requesting them to nominate a further 10 people each to take this fight forward: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Sajjan Jindal, Deepika Padukone, Sania Mirza, Irfan Pathan, Supriya Sule, Kuldeep Handoo, Sheetal Devi, Iqra Rasool, Palak Bijral,” the post added on X. J&K Deputy CM Slams Mehbooba Mufti Over Alcohol Ban Failure During PDP Rule

Alcohol Ban Failure

Deputy Chief Minister Jammu and Kashmir, Surinder Kumar Choudhary today lashed out at former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti for failing to impose ban on alcohol when the PDP was in power after 2014.

He claimed whatever is being taken up in the name of alcohol ban by PDP is all “deceit” and an attempt to play with the emotions of people.

“The PDP was in power in Jammu & Kashmir after 2014. The bill to impose a ban on alcohol was also introduced at that time, but why did the then chief minister Mehbooba Mufti fail to address this grave issue? Why was the ban not imposed then?,” Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary as per Greater Kashmir told reporters in Jammu.

He accused PDP of destroying the structure of Jammu and Kashmir, and paving the way to turn J&K into union territory. “It is the PDP which is solely responsible for the crisis the people of J&K are stuck in. Mehbooba Mufti is shedding crocodile tears over the situation which she should stop. She cannot befool people for long. Not only alcohol, drugs have become a major challenge for us. Besides, Jammu has been gripped under social crimes and murders for quite some time which should be addressed without any wait. Why is the PDP silent over it? Today Mehbooba and her daughter are giving lectures to the government on what to do and what not, but we know efficiently how to work for the betterment of our people,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister also said that the National Conference (NC) knows how to strengthen the party, Jammu & Kashmir and the country, and those lecturing us should introspect what they committed in past.

He added that PDP in absence of tangible issues is trying to “incite” people against the National Conference-led government in Jammu & Kashmir.

When asked about few former members of banned Jama’at-e-Islami have floated a new political outfit – Justice and Development Front (JDF) – the Deputy Chief Minister Choudhary said it is a welcome step and whatever they expressed in public assembly in southern Kulgam, should be practiced in letter and spirit.

“If they (JDF) have decided to launch a political party, it is better late than never. We hope they will live up to peoples’ expectations,” he said.

He continued that from the times of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah to Omar Abdullah, NC has always tried to strengthen democracy at grassroots level in J&K. He held that it is our effort from a very long time to ensure the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley in a dignified way.

Earlier, he addressed a gathering at party office Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan in Jammu to commemorate the 10th death anniversary of senior party leader Late Sheikh Nazir Ahmad.

amit shah

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah interacted with 250 children from Jammu and Kashmir under ‘Watan Ko Jano’ programme in New Delhi today. Union Home Secretary and Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) were also present on the occasion. The program aims to introduce the youth and children of Jammu and Kashmir to the nation’s dynamic progress, rich social fabric, and cultural diversity, fostering a strong sense of social, cultural, and emotional connection.

During the interaction, Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the ‘Watan Ko Jano’ program as an initiative to deepen the understanding of our country. He said that our country is our home and just as we are familiar with every part of our home, we should also know our country in the same way. Shri Shah said that this vision led the Government of India to launch the ‘Watan Ko Jano’ program. Home Minister said that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has united the whole country by abolishing Article 370 and now the citizens of Kashmir have the same rights on the country as the citizens of any other state.

Shah underlined that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, significant efforts have been made over the past decade to make India prosperous, modern, and a global leader. He expressed confidence that in the future, students from around the world will come to India for education. As India advances, it will naturally drive progress for all. Home Minister emphasized that a more prosperous, modern, and developed India will bring benefits to everyone.

Union Home Minister said that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed significant development in education, industry, healthcare, and infrastructure. He highlighted that the world’s highest railway arch bridge, Asia’s largest tunnel, and the country’s only cable suspension bridge have all been built in Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir is also the only region in India to have two All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), along with two Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). It also has 24 major colleges, and eight universities. He emphasized that Kashmir, once badly affected by bomb blasts and terrorism, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade. Incidents of stone pelting, bomb blasts, and terrorism have been eliminated, allowing schools to function smoothly. Infrastructure development, including roads, hospitals, and universities, has progressed rapidly. Moreover, 36,000 elected public representatives now have their rightful authority at the Panchayat and Municipality levels, strengthening grassroots democracy in the region.

Shah said that development can only happen when there is peace. He said no one benefits from terrorism. In the last 30 years, 38 thousand people have been killed in Kashmir due to violence. Shah said that there has been an 80 per cent reduction in the death of civilians in Kashmir, and people are happy about this, but true happiness will come when not a single citizen of Jammu and Kashmir loses their life. Union Home Minister said that it is our goal to make Jammu and Kashmir a place where not a single person dies due to terrorism. He said that the responsibility of creating such a Jammu and Kashmir lies with the children and youth.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation told the children that the entire country belongs to them and they should go back to Kashmir with the same spirit. He said that peace and tranquility is the most important thing and peace has come there under the rule of PM Modi. He said that under the Modi government, educational systems have been established, industries have come, hospitals have been built, drinking water facilities have been provided, and large infrastructure projects have been carried out. Shri Shah stated that no government can maintain peace in Jammu and Kashmir, only children can do so. He mentioned that if every child in Jammu and Kashmir explains to their parents and neighbours that the entire country belongs to us, and we need to live in peace with everyone while driving terrorism out of here, then there will be no need for police or army. He further said that the day is not far when there will be no weapons in anyone’s hands, and there will be no need for police or army with weapons.

Shah appealed to the children to go back to their villages and talk to their parents, siblings, friends, relatives, and people in their village about peace, harmony, and development. He said that this country belongs to everyone, and it is important to instill this belief in the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Shah said that Prime Minister Modi has brought so much development to the country, creating numerous avenues and opportunities that await the youth and children, and they should take advantage of these opportunities. He added that we all must work together to transform the peace established in Jammu and Kashmir into lasting peace.

Two hundred fifty children from weaker sections of Jammu and Kashmir including 62 girls and 188 boys in the age group of 9-18 years visited Jaipur, Ajmer and Delhi under ‘Watan Ko Jano’ programme organized by Social Welfare Department of the Govt of J&K in coordination with Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
