Elderly Man from Jammu and Kashmir Dies After School Boundary Wall Collapse in Chandigarh

mysterious death

An elderly man from Kulgam district in Jammu and Kashmir tragically died after a wall (described in some reports as a concrete slab or boundary wall) collapsed on him in the Naya Gaon area near Chandigarh.

The deceased has been identified as Gul Mohammad Malik, a dry fruit seller (or street vendor) from Bugam village in Kulgam. The incident occurred recently, and local Kashmiris in the area have highlighted challenges faced by the community there..Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Following his death, there have been reports of insensitivity in handling the situation: his family reportedly had to navigate bureaucratic hurdles (“run from pillar to post”), and his body was transported in a load carrier vehicle instead of an ambulance. This has drawn criticism for being inhumane.

Prominent political figure Mehbooba Mufti (former Chief Minister of J&K and President of JKPDP) highlighted the case on X, calling it shameful and urging Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to ensure the mortal remains are brought back home with dignity for last rites.

JKSA Condemns Brutal Attack on 18-Year-Old Kashmiri Shawl Seller in Uttarakhand, Seeks Immediate Action

Jammu and Kashmir Students Association

The Jammu Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has expressed deep shock and anguish over the brutal attack on an 18-year-old Kashmiri boy in the Vikas Nagar area of Uttarakhand.

According to JKSA, the young boy was selling shawls with his family to earn a living during the winter months when he was attacked by a group of fringe elements. He was beaten mercilessly and left with multiple bruises across his body.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The association said the boy’s left arm was fractured and he suffered serious head injuries after being struck with iron rods. He was first taken to a local hospital and later referred to Doon Hospital in Dehradun. Blood was reportedly oozing from his head following the assault.

JKSA said relatives of the victim informed them that the attackers first questioned the family about their identity. When they came to know that the family belonged to the Muslim community and was from Kashmir, the violence escalated. The boy was repeatedly punched, while other family members were dragged, slapped, and attacked with sharp iron rods.

Calling the incident a chilling reminder of growing communal profiling and mob brutality, JKSA said the youth was only trying to help his family earn a dignified livelihood during the harsh winter season. “An 18-year-old selling shawls to support his family was met not with humanity, but with hatred,” the association said.

The Jammu Kashmir Students Association has urged Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to intervene immediately, ensure the registration of a strict FIR, and book all the culprits under relevant sections of the law.

Army Soldier Injured in Landmine Blast Near LoC in Rajouri District of Jammu and Kashmir

Army Soldier Injured

An Indian Army soldier was injured in a landmine explosion near the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, officials said.

According to officials, the blast took place while army troops were patrolling a forward area in Keri. The landmine exploded suddenly during the routine patrol.

The injured soldier was immediately evacuated from the area and shifted to a hospital for medical treatment. His condition was not immediately known, officials added. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Officials explained that the forward areas along the LoC are part of an anti-infiltration obstacle system and are dotted with landmines. These mines are meant to prevent infiltration but sometimes get washed away due to heavy rain, leading to such accidents.

Authorities said such incidents highlight the risks faced by soldiers while guarding the borders in difficult terrain and weather conditions.

Further details are awaited.

Mutton Price to Stay at Rs 700 per Kg in Kashmir During Ramadan, Butchers Union Assures

Unsafe Meat

Dispelling fears of a price rise ahead of Ramadan, the All Kashmir Butchers Union on Saturday said that mutton will continue to be sold at the current rate across Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement issued here, the union clearly denied rumours that mutton prices would rise to Rs 750 or Rs 800 per kilogram. It assured consumers that the price will remain fixed at Rs 700 per kg throughout the holy month of Ramadan and during the Eid-ul-Fitr festival. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The union said reports of a price hike are unfounded and misleading. It also clarified that mutton and other meat prices in Jammu and Kashmir are not regulated by the Legal Metrology Department or any other government body. As a result, prices are decided through self-regulation by traders and general market forces.

The union, however, highlighted serious external challenges affecting the supply chain. It accused authorities in Punjab of imposing what it called illegal levies on livestock trucks at various checkpoints.

According to the union, taxes linked to the Madhopur cattle fair and grazing charges are unfair and increase the cost of mutton before it reaches Kashmir. Madhopur is a major transit point for trucks carrying sheep and other livestock from Punjab and other states to the Valley.

While Punjab regulates cattle fairs under the Punjab Cattle Fairs (Regulation) Act, 1967, Kashmiri traders allege that unofficial “cattle fair taxes” ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per truck are being charged. The union has described this practice as extortion.

Earlier, the butchers’ body had approached the Jammu and Kashmir government to raise the issue diplomatically with Punjab authorities. Despite these difficulties, the union has urged consumers to buy mutton only at the officially fixed rate of Rs 700 per kg.

It is important to note that the J&K government does not have the legal power to control or cap mutton prices. In 2023, the administration revoked the J&K Mutton (Licensing and Control) Order of 1973, ending five decades of government price control. Since then, pricing has been left entirely to market forces and traders’ associations.

Kashmir consumes around 22 lakh sheep every year, producing nearly 2.1 million kilograms of mutton. About 70 per cent of this supply is imported from outside the region, making transportation costs and supply disruptions key factors in pricing.
