Kanwar Yatra Crackdown: Muslim Man Says He Used Hindu Name ‘Gopal’ to Work Safely at Dhaba on Sharma Ji’s Instructions

Kanwar Yatra Crackdown

Communal Tensions Flare as Muslim Worker Assaulted for Using Hindu Name at Dhaba Along Kanwar Yatra Route in UP

A disturbing episode of communal tension has surfaced in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, just ahead of the annual Kanwar Yatra, after a Muslim worker, Tajammul, was found working at a roadside dhaba under the assumed Hindu name “Gopal” to avoid harassment from local Hindu groups.

The incident took place at Pandit Ji Vaishno Dhaba, situated on National Highway 58, a key route frequented by Kanwar pilgrims. Following protests from members of a Hindu group, the dhaba has now been shut down.

“I Was Told to Use a Hindu Name”

In an interview with NDTV, Tajammul openly admitted that he was working under a false identity—not out of deception, but out of fear.

“My name is Tajammul,” he said. “I was asked to go by Gopal so I could work at the dhaba without creating trouble. Sharma ji, the dhaba owner, told me to do so.”

Tajammul explained that he was instructed to conceal his Muslim identity and present himself as Hindu in order to avoid backlash from religious groups that had begun conducting identity checks of food vendors along the Kanwar Yatra route.

“They told me to wear a kada (a religious bangle),” he added. “I wore it for three months so I wouldn’t be recognised.”

Assault and Intimidation

The situation escalated on June 28, when Swami Yashveer Ji Maharaj, a local religious figure, along with several of his associates, visited the dhaba as part of what they described as an “identification campaign” to verify the religious affiliations of food vendors.

Tajammul, still operating under the name “Gopal,” tried to evade questioning by claiming he had lost his Aadhaar card and that his phone was broken. But video footage later circulated online shows him being physically manhandled and assaulted, including having his pants forcibly pulled down.

“They beat me and I was crying,” Tajammul recalled. “I was scared for my life.”

Police Response and Legal Action

The Muzaffarnagar police have since summoned six individuals for questioning in relation to the incident: Sumit Bahraghi, Rohit, Vivek, Sumit, Sunny, and Rakesh, all reportedly linked to Swami Yashveer’s Yoga Sadhana Ashram in Baghra.

No arrests have been made so far, though police officials have confirmed that an investigation is underway. Senior officers have stated that they are reviewing video evidence and will take further action based on legal findings.

Policy and Political Backdrop

The incident takes place against a broader, more controversial backdrop. The Uttar Pradesh government had recently issued a directive mandating all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display food licenses and owner details, including religious identity where applicable.

While the government defends the directive as a move for transparency, critics and opposition parties argue that it fosters communal discrimination and puts Muslim vendors at risk of harassment or worse.

Civil rights activists have condemned the incident, saying it reflects a growing climate of fear and religious profiling in public spaces.

“No one should be forced to hide their identity to earn a living,” one rights group said in a statement. “This is not just discrimination—it’s humiliation and violence sanctioned by silence.”

Rising Pattern of Vigilantism

The assault on Tajammul is not an isolated case. In recent years, there has been a surge in vigilante actions across India, particularly in regions with Hindu pilgrimage traffic, where right-wing groups have taken it upon themselves to “verify” the religion of vendors and workers.

Critics warn that such acts of social policing, especially when backed by subtle official endorsement, threaten the secular ethos of India and endanger the livelihoods and dignity of entire communities.

As the Kanwar Yatra progresses and thousands of pilgrims continue their journey across Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states, questions are being raised about freedom, fear, and fairness—not just on the roads but in the soul of the republic.

Indian-Origin Man Ishaan Sharma Arrested After Violent Mid-Flight Brawl on Frontier Airlines Flight to Miami

Ishaan Sharma Arrested

On July 1, 2025, a violent incident occurred aboard Frontier Airlines flight 1203 from Philadelphia to Miami, involving 21-year-old Ishaan Sharma, an Indian-origin man from Newark, New Jersey. Sharma was arrested upon landing at Miami International Airport and charged with battery following an altercation with fellow passenger Keanu Evans. The incident, partially captured in a viral video, shows Sharma and Evans engaged in a physical struggle, with both men attempting to choke each other while other passengers and a flight attendant tried to intervene, shouting for them to stop.

According to Evans, who was seated one row ahead of Sharma, the incident was unprovoked. He reported to WSVN that Sharma began acting erratically, muttering strange phrases and issuing death threats, including a “dark laugh” and statements like, “You puny, mortal man, if you challenge me, it will result in your death.” Alarmed, Evans informed the flight attendants after using the restroom and was advised to press the assistance button if the behavior continued. When Sharma allegedly continued his threats, Evans pressed the button, which reportedly escalated the situation. Sharma confronted Evans, going “forehead to forehead” before grabbing his throat and choking him. Evans defended himself, leading to a physical brawl in the confined space of the aircraft.

The altercation left Sharma with a black eye and a laceration above his left eyebrow, while Evans sustained minor scratches. A mugshot released after the incident showed Sharma with visible injuries, including a swollen, bruised eye. Evans expressed regret over the violent outcome, stating to WSVN, “It makes me feel bad because I don’t want people to get the wrong idea about who I am as a person.”

Sharma’s attorney, Renee Gordon, provided a different account, claiming the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Gordon said Sharma was meditating as part of his religious practice, and the passenger behind him—presumably Evans—misinterpreted this “silent practice” as threatening. However, the judge was unconvinced by this defense, setting Sharma’s bond at $500 and issuing a stay-away order, prohibiting him from contacting Evans or visiting his school or workplace.

The incident has sparked discussion on social media, with some X posts condemning Sharma’s actions and calling for a lifetime flight ban, while others noted the chaotic nature of the event. The case remains under investigation, with Sharma in custody facing battery charges

Commercial LPG Prices Slashed by ₹58.50; Petrol Pumps Ban Fueling of End-of-Life Vehicles from July 1

LPG Prices

Oil marketing companies revised the prices of commercial LPG gas cylinders on Tuesday, reducing the cost of a 19 kg commercial cylinder by Rs 58.50. The new rates came into effect from July 1, bringing relief to commercial users such as hotels, restaurants, and businesses.

While in Delhi, with the latest revision, the retail sale price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder was set at Rs 1665, down from the previous rate. There was, however, no change in the price of 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders, which are widely used in households.

The commercial LPG cylinder will cost Rs 1,616 in Mumbai, Rs 1,769 in Kolkata and Rs 1,823.50 in Chennai.

Meanwhile, a separate development, petrol pumps across the national capital notices warning against fueling End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) were seen pasted on display boards. The warning stated that “fuel will not be dispensed to end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) – 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles from July 1, 2025.”

Along with these notices, CCTV cameras and speakers were also installed at several fuel stations to monitor compliance and inform customers.

On June 27, according to a latest research report by ICICI Bank, global crude oil prices are likely to see a downside, weighed down by the de-escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict, soft demand, and increasing supply.

On the demand side, the report suggests that if the negative sentiment regarding the trade war persists, it will result in depressed demand.

Additionally, crude oil demand is expected to remain flat in 2025, coming in at relatively unchanged levels of 102.9mbpd as was seen in 2024, taking into account the subdued global growth momentum.

On the supply side, the global supply of crude oil followed an upward trajectory on a sequential basis, led by higher production from OPEC, while non-OPEC supply remained fairly robust.

“The physical markets recorded a net supply surplus for the fifth consecutive month of 1.6mbpd in May compared to 1.9mbpd recorded in April,” ICICI Bank said.

The demand showed a rise of 0.3mbpd to 102.6mbpd in May. However, this supply-demand equation was not adequate to match the supply of 104.2mbpd that is being driven by increasing output from OPEC.

However, the report also highlights that the spike in crude prices in response to the Iran-Israel conflict was much lower than previous geopolitical events such as the Russia-Ukraine war, reflecting an oversupplied physical market that is prevailing at the current juncture. (ANI)
