Alia Bhatt’s Ex-Assistant Arrested for Rs 77 Lakh Fraud Using Fake Bills, Tracked Down in Bengaluru

Alia Bhat

Alia Bhatt’s former personal assistant has been arrested for cheating the actor of Rs 77 lakh. Vedika Prakash Shetty, 32, is accused of committing irregularities worth Rs 76.9 lakh in Ms Bhatt’s production company, Eternal Sunshine Productions Private Limited, and her personal accounts.

This fraud, police have said, was committed between May 2022 and August 2024. The matter came to light after Alia Bhatt’s mother, actor-director Soni Razdan, filed a complaint with Juhu police on January 23. Thereafter, a case was registered under sections relating to criminal breach of trust and cheating and police started looking for Vedika Shetty.

According to police sources, Vedika Shetty worked as Ms Bhatt’s personal assistant from 2021 to 2024. During this time, she handled the actor’s financial documents and payments and planned her schedule.

The investigation has revealed that Vedika Shetty allegedly prepared fake bills, got Ms Bhatt to sign them and siphoned off the money, police sources have said. She told the actor that the expenses were for her travel, meetings and other related arrangements. Vedika Shetty, the probe has found, used professional tools to make these fake bills look authentic. After Ms Bhatt signed them, the amounts were transferred to the account of her friend, who would then route the money back to Vedika Shetty.

After Ms Razdan filed a police complaint, Vedika Shetty was on the run and kept changing her location. She was tracked down to Rajasthan, then to Karnataka, then to Pune and then to Bengaluru. Eventually, Juhu police caught up with her in Bengaluru and arrested her. She was then brought to Mumbai on a transit demand.

Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad Assaults Canteen Operator Over ‘Rotten Dal’, Justifies Attack as ‘Balasaheb’s Style’

MLA Sanjay Gaikwad

In a shocking show of highhandedness, a Maharashtra lawmaker upset over the quality of dal served to him at an MLA canteen in Mumbai assaulted the canteen operator, hitting him on the face and punching him so hard that he fell on the floor.

The incident at the Akashvani MLA canteen in Churchgate was caught on camera. A video clip has now gone viral, raising questions about the conduct of elected representatives in public. The MLA, however, said he does not regret his act and said this was the “Shiv Sena style”.

Sanjay Gaikwad, MLA from Buldhana, had ordered a thali. When the order was delivered, he found that the dal was stinking. A towel wrapped around his waist, the MLA went to the canteen and started asking the staff who prepared the dal. He was seen calling people and asking them to smell the packet. The MLA also said he had some of the dal and experienced stomach cramps and uneasiness.

“Who gave this to me? Smell this. Pack this and call the food department. You are giving this to an MLA, what are you giving others?” One man is heard saying, “A person could die after eating this.”

In the video, the MLA is seen getting impatient, waiting for the canteen operator. He then approaches the reception and asks the staff to call him. When the canteen operator comes, the MLA opens the pack and makes him smell the dal. Even before the canteen operator can raise his face, the MLA slaps him across his face. Two more slaps follow. The MLA then punches the canteen operator so hard that he falls on the floor.

When NDTV approached the MLA, he said the dal was not stale, it was “rotten”. “I had asked for dal, rice and two chapatis. I started eating and threw up after a few morsels. I started feeling unwell. I went to the canteen. I did not even change. I went to canteen and asked them to smell it and then said it’s very bad. I called the manager, and he said it was not fit to eat. Over the past several years, I have told them to give me fresh food. Their chicken and egg stocks are days old. They are playing with the health of thousands of people every day. And when people complain, they don’t listen,” he said.

Asked if such conduct suits an MLA, he replied, “I am an MLA and a warrior too. When someone chose not to understand despite repeated attempts, I used the language Balasaheb Thackeray has taught us. I lost it. I am a champion in judo, gymnastics and karate and wrestling. I am not a Gandhian. I have no regrets. I don’t think I have done anything wrong. I will raise this issue in the Assembly too.”

NDTV went to the canteen and spoke with customers there. Most customers said that the food quality needs to improve, but the way the MLA assaulted the canteen staff was not right. Staff members, too, criticised the assault of their colleague.

Supreme Court Issues Notice on ex-chief Of SIMI Safdar Nagori’s Sedition Plea, Seeks Clarity on Appeal

Safdar Nagori

The Supreme Court of India, on July 3, 2025, issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government in response to a plea filed by Safdar Nagori, the former chief of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). Nagori, convicted in 2017 for sedition and other charges, is seeking clarification on whether his appeal against the conviction can proceed in the Madhya Pradesh High Court, given the ongoing legal ambiguity surrounding India’s sedition law.

Nagori, arrested in 2008, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court in Madhya Pradesh for multiple charges, including sedition under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, waging war against the state, promoting enmity between groups, and violations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). His appeal, filed in the Madhya Pradesh High Court, has been stalled due to the Supreme Court’s May 2022 order, which stayed all proceedings related to sedition cases pending a review of the constitutionality of Section 124A. This stay has created uncertainty about whether appeals in sedition cases can move forward in lower courts.

The plea before the Supreme Court, heard by a bench comprising Justices A and B (names not specified in available records), highlighted the procedural limbo affecting Nagori’s case. Nagori’s legal team argued that the 2022 stay order has inadvertently delayed justice by preventing the High Court from adjudicating his appeal. They sought explicit directions from the Supreme Court to clarify whether the High Court can proceed with the appeal despite the ongoing suspension of sedition-related proceedings.

The Supreme Court, acknowledging the complexity of the issue, noted that a two-judge bench could not issue clarifications on a prior order passed by a three-judge bench in May 2022. Consequently, the court issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government, directing it to file a response within a stipulated timeframe. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing in the second week of July 2025, when the court will likely address the broader implications of the sedition law’s suspension on pending appeals.

Background of the Case

Safdar Nagori, once a prominent figure in SIMI, was arrested in March 2008 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, following allegations of orchestrating anti-national activities. SIMI, banned under the UAPA in 2001 for its alleged involvement in extremist activities, was accused of promoting ideologies that threatened India’s sovereignty and communal harmony. Nagori’s 2017 conviction stemmed from evidence linking him to activities such as organizing terror training camps and inciting violence, charges that he and his legal team have consistently disputed.

The sedition charge under Section 124A, which pertains to acts aimed at exciting disaffection against the government, has been a contentious issue in India. Critics argue that the colonial-era law is often misused to suppress dissent, while the government maintains it is necessary to protect national security. The Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to stay sedition proceedings came in response to multiple petitions challenging the law’s validity, with the court urging the Union government to reconsider its provisions. The Union government, in its affidavit, has indicated that it is reviewing the law, but no final decision has been made as of July 2025.

Implications of the Stay on Sedition Cases

The Supreme Court’s 2022 order has had a ripple effect on numerous cases across India, including Nagori’s. Legal experts note that the stay has created a judicial bottleneck, leaving many appellants, like Nagori, in a state of uncertainty. While the stay prevents new sedition cases from being filed, it has also led to the deferral of appeals and trials in existing cases, raising questions about the right to a speedy trial.

Nagori’s plea underscores a critical issue: the lack of clarity on how courts should handle appeals in cases where sedition is one of multiple charges. His conviction includes offenses under the UAPA and other sections of the IPC, which are unaffected by the sedition stay, complicating the High Court’s ability to proceed without specific guidance from the Supreme Court.

Reactions and Next Steps

Legal scholars and human rights advocates have been closely watching the case, viewing it as a potential litmus test for the judiciary’s approach to balancing national security concerns with individual rights. Some argue that the prolonged delay in resolving the sedition law’s status reflects broader challenges in India’s legal system, particularly regarding outdated laws and their application in modern contexts.

The Madhya Pradesh government is expected to submit its response before the next hearing, outlining its stance on whether the High Court should proceed with Nagori’s appeal. The Supreme Court’s decision in this matter could set a precedent for other pending sedition cases, potentially influencing the trajectory of the ongoing review of Section 124A.

As the case progresses, all eyes will be on the Supreme Court’s handling of this complex issue, which sits at the intersection of free speech, national security, and judicial efficiency. The hearing in mid-July 2025 is anticipated to provide further clarity, not only for Nagori but also for the broader legal landscape surrounding sedition in India.

Baramulla Imposes BNSS-163 Restrictions to Prevent Muharram Clashes in Singhpora

BNSS-163 Restrictions

To maintain public order and prevent any potential disturbance during Muharram, the District Magistrate of Baramulla, Minga Sherpa Friday imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in several parts of Tehsil Singhpora.

The restrictions cover villages including Mirgund, Mirchimar, and adjoining areas of Sub Division Pattan.

The decision follows a detailed report by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, which flagged serious concerns over the traditional Muharram 9 procession, scheduled for Saturday, July 5.

The event, traditionally organized by the Mirchimar Mohalla Committee reportedly linked in the past to the now-banned Ittihadul Muslimeen has drawn objections from various quarters, including members of the Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association.

According to the order issued on Friday, opposing groups have raised disputes over the legitimacy of the procession and ownership rights of the Imam Bargah, leading to rising tensions in the locality. Previous confrontations between the factions and recent incidents of violence including FIRs registered at police stations in Pattan and Shalteng have further heightened the administration’s concerns.

The SSP’s report also referred to the Union Home Ministry’s March 2025 decision declaring Ittihadul Muslimeen an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The ban was enforced due to the group’s alleged involvement in activities deemed a threat to national security. In light of this, any public event or gathering involving the association or its affiliates is legally prohibited.

Given the sensitivity of the situation and the need to ensure communal harmony, the District Magistrate has enforced restrictions from 8:30 PM on July 4 to 9:30 PM on July 5.

It further reads that during this period, any public gathering of four or more persons is banned in the notified areas. Processions are strictly prohibited, and only police, armed forces, or designated magistrates are permitted to carry firearms or objects that could be used as weapons in public.

Furthermore, the use of loudspeakers or any sound amplification devices for announcements or speeches whether stationary or mobile is restricted unless prior approval is granted by the District Magistrate.

The administration has appealed to the public to fully cooperate and abide by the restrictions in the interest of peace and public safety. The order emphasizes that the measures are preventive in nature and intended to ensure a peaceful Muharram observance in the region.
