Altaf Bukhari Slams Administration for Blocking Apni Party’s Martyrs’ Day Tribute, Calls Actions Authoritarian

Altaf Bukhari

Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari on Sunday has strongly condemned the Jammu and Kashmir administration for allegedly preventing him and his party from paying homage to the 1931 martyrs on Martyrs’ Day.

In a statement issued here, Bukhari said that after being denied permission to visit Mazar-e-Shuhada at Naqshband Sahib—where they intended to offer prayers for the 1931 martyrs—the administration further escalated its actions by locking the Apni Party headquarters in Srinagar to block a planned memorial event.

“Police personnel in large numbers were deployed near my residence in Sheikh Bagh to stop me from reaching the party office and participating in the peaceful prayer meeting,” Bukhari said. He also revealed that police were stationed outside the homes of several senior leaders and workers of the party, thereby obstructing their participation in today’s commemorations.

Calling these measures “clear and blatant examples of highhandedness and authoritarian behaviour,” Bukhari questioned the rationale behind the restrictions. “What is the purpose of stopping us from commemorating Martyrs’ Day, and how does it serve the authorities?” he asked.

He emphasized that the Apni Party had no intention to disturb public order and only sought to remember the martyrs through peaceful prayer and reflection. “As peace-loving and law-abiding citizens, we would have carried out these activities quietly, without causing any disruption to law and order,” he asserted.

Expressing deep disappointment with the administration’s conduct, Bukhari affirmed that no act of suppression could erase the memory of the 1931 martyrs. “Their memory lives on in our hearts, and no barriers can prevent us from honouring them from the depths of our hearts,” he said, leaving it to the public to judge the fairness of the government’s actions.

Jammu Police Recovers ₹75 Lakh in Job Scam, Marks First BNSS Property Attachment in India

Job Scam

In a landmark action under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Jammu Police has successfully executed its first-ever property attachment in a high-profile job fraud case, resulting in the recovery and refund of ₹75 lakhs to victims.

This milestone reflects the victim-centric approach embodied in India’s new criminal justice reforms.

The case revolves around Harpreet Singh, a resident of Pallanwala, who posed as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army and defrauded multiple individuals by falsely promising them jobs in prestigious government institutions. The fraud came to light when Arun Sharma, a resident of Nagrota, filed a complaint on 6 November 2024, leading to the registration of FIR No. 293/2024 under relevant sections of the BNSS at Police Station Nagrota, Jammu. The accused was arrested the following day.

Investigation revealed that a sale agreement had been executed for a double-story duplex building in Channi Bheja, Tehsil Bahu Fort Jammu. Further financial probe found that a significant sum had been received by co-accused individuals from the main accused through online transactions and cash. The funds were identified as proceeds of crime collected from innocent victims.

Acting on a police plea, the Hon’ble Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jammu, passed an attachment order on 18 January 2025 under Section 107(5) BNSS, which was executed by Tehsildar Bahu. A 14-day show cause notice was issued to the accused to justify the source of funds, failing which the property was to be auctioned.

During court proceedings, based on the evidence presented by the Investigating Officer, the seller admitted to receiving a substantial amount from the accused and voluntarily agreed to refund it in phases. A disputed amount remains under trial.

The Hon’ble Court ruled that the attachment order shall remain in effect until the admitted amount is fully deposited. It also prohibited the seller from creating any third-party interest in the property. The SSP Jammu was directed to open a dedicated account for collecting and distributing the recovered funds among the verified victims.

Today, ₹75 lakhs was distributed equally among 17 victims through cheques. This marks the first instance in the Union Territory of J&K under the BNSS where defrauded money has been returned to victims, exemplifying the law’s focus on justice, accountability, and restitution.

The case was meticulously investigated by Inspector Parvez Sajad (SHO Nagrota), under the supervision of DySP Vinod Kundal (SDPO Nagrota), with overall oversight by SP Rural Brijesh Sharma and SSP Jammu Sh. Joginder Singh. Legal assistance was provided by Senior Prosecuting Officer Altaf Wahid, with financial expertise from Account Officer Kamal Bhagat.

This breakthrough demonstrates a strong legal and administrative resolve to tackle economic offences and restore public trust. It sets a crucial precedent for future enforcement under the BNSS and reflects the evolving framework of a more responsive and victim-oriented criminal justice system

Alia Bhatt’s Ex-Assistant Arrested for Rs 77 Lakh Fraud Using Fake Bills, Tracked Down in Bengaluru

Alia Bhat

Alia Bhatt’s former personal assistant has been arrested for cheating the actor of Rs 77 lakh. Vedika Prakash Shetty, 32, is accused of committing irregularities worth Rs 76.9 lakh in Ms Bhatt’s production company, Eternal Sunshine Productions Private Limited, and her personal accounts.

This fraud, police have said, was committed between May 2022 and August 2024. The matter came to light after Alia Bhatt’s mother, actor-director Soni Razdan, filed a complaint with Juhu police on January 23. Thereafter, a case was registered under sections relating to criminal breach of trust and cheating and police started looking for Vedika Shetty.

According to police sources, Vedika Shetty worked as Ms Bhatt’s personal assistant from 2021 to 2024. During this time, she handled the actor’s financial documents and payments and planned her schedule.

The investigation has revealed that Vedika Shetty allegedly prepared fake bills, got Ms Bhatt to sign them and siphoned off the money, police sources have said. She told the actor that the expenses were for her travel, meetings and other related arrangements. Vedika Shetty, the probe has found, used professional tools to make these fake bills look authentic. After Ms Bhatt signed them, the amounts were transferred to the account of her friend, who would then route the money back to Vedika Shetty.

After Ms Razdan filed a police complaint, Vedika Shetty was on the run and kept changing her location. She was tracked down to Rajasthan, then to Karnataka, then to Pune and then to Bengaluru. Eventually, Juhu police caught up with her in Bengaluru and arrested her. She was then brought to Mumbai on a transit demand.

Alia Bhatt is one of the most prominent and talented actresses in contemporary Indian cinema. Born on March 15, 1993, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, she hails from the renowned Bhatt family of filmmakers. She is the daughter of acclaimed film director Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan. Alia made her acting debut at the young age of 19 with Karan Johar’s 2012 film Student of the Year, which instantly catapulted her to fame. Over the years, she has carved a niche for herself through a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films.

Alia Bhatt

Known for her natural acting, emotional depth, and on-screen versatility, Alia Bhatt has portrayed a wide range of characters — from a kidnapped girl in Highway (2014) and a Bihari migrant labourer in Udta Punjab (2016), to a spy in Raazi (2018) and a fierce mafia queen in Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022). She has received numerous awards, including multiple Filmfare Awards, and is often praised for her ability to blend mainstream appeal with strong performances.

In addition to acting, Alia is a successful entrepreneur and producer. She launched her own production company, Eternal Sunshine Productions, and also runs a sustainable clothing brand, Ed-a-Mamma. In 2022, she married fellow actor Ranbir Kapoor, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Raha, the same year. Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad Assaults Canteen Operator Over ‘Rotten Dal’, Justifies Attack as ‘Balasaheb’s Style’

MLA Sanjay Gaikwad

In a shocking show of highhandedness, a Maharashtra lawmaker upset over the quality of dal served to him at an MLA canteen in Mumbai assaulted the canteen operator, hitting him on the face and punching him so hard that he fell on the floor.

The incident at the Akashvani MLA canteen in Churchgate was caught on camera. A video clip has now gone viral, raising questions about the conduct of elected representatives in public. The MLA, however, said he does not regret his act and said this was the “Shiv Sena style”.

Sanjay Gaikwad, MLA from Buldhana, had ordered a thali. When the order was delivered, he found that the dal was stinking. A towel wrapped around his waist, the MLA went to the canteen and started asking the staff who prepared the dal. He was seen calling people and asking them to smell the packet. The MLA also said he had some of the dal and experienced stomach cramps and uneasiness.

“Who gave this to me? Smell this. Pack this and call the food department. You are giving this to an MLA, what are you giving others?” One man is heard saying, “A person could die after eating this.”

In the video, the MLA is seen getting impatient, waiting for the canteen operator. He then approaches the reception and asks the staff to call him. When the canteen operator comes, the MLA opens the pack and makes him smell the dal. Even before the canteen operator can raise his face, the MLA slaps him across his face. Two more slaps follow. The MLA then punches the canteen operator so hard that he falls on the floor.

When NDTV approached the MLA, he said the dal was not stale, it was “rotten”. “I had asked for dal, rice and two chapatis. I started eating and threw up after a few morsels. I started feeling unwell. I went to the canteen. I did not even change. I went to canteen and asked them to smell it and then said it’s very bad. I called the manager, and he said it was not fit to eat. Over the past several years, I have told them to give me fresh food. Their chicken and egg stocks are days old. They are playing with the health of thousands of people every day. And when people complain, they don’t listen,” he said.

Asked if such conduct suits an MLA, he replied, “I am an MLA and a warrior too. When someone chose not to understand despite repeated attempts, I used the language Balasaheb Thackeray has taught us. I lost it. I am a champion in judo, gymnastics and karate and wrestling. I am not a Gandhian. I have no regrets. I don’t think I have done anything wrong. I will raise this issue in the Assembly too.”

NDTV went to the canteen and spoke with customers there. Most customers said that the food quality needs to improve, but the way the MLA assaulted the canteen staff was not right. Staff members, too, criticised the assault of their colleague.
