According to eyewitnesses, the bus skidded off the road and overturned while negotiating a curve. Soon after the accident, locals, police, and army personnel rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation.

All the injured passengers were quickly shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara for medical treatment.

Operation Mahadev: Mastermind of Pahalgam Attack Among 3 Pakistani Terrorists Killed Near Srinagar

Mastermind of Pahalgam Attack

As Defence Minister Rajnath Singh began the Operation Sindoor debate in Parliament, security forces scored a massive win today by gunning down three Pakistani terrorists in an encounter near Srinagar, two of them involved in the Pahalgam attack in which 26 innocents were murdered in cold blood.

Suleiman Shah, a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, was identified as the mastermind of the April 22 terror attack that shook the nation. Security sources have confirmed that he was among the terrorists killed in the encounter this morning. Today’s operation, named Operation Mahadev, neutralised two other terrorists: Abu Hamza and Yasir. Yasir, too, is believed to be among the Pahalgam killers. Security forces from the Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police were part of today’s joint operation.

Suleiman served in the Pakistan Army and was also known as Hashim Moosa. In the aftermath of the terror attack at Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had announced a Rs 20 lakh reward on anyone providing information about Suleiman.

The official X account of the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps earlier posted that the security forces have launched Operation Mahadev in Lidwas. “Three terrorists have been neutralised in an intense firefight. Operation Continues,” the Army said in an update, adding that the operation is not over yet.

All the terrorists, it is learnt, were “high-value” targets. According to reports, the security forces acted on an intelligence input and launched the operation in the Mulnar area of Harwan. Reinforcements have been rushed to the area and a combing exercise is on.

NDTV has also accessed Photo of the terrorist hideout that was targeted in Operation Mahadev. The visuals show multiple guns in the hideout located deep inside a forest area. According to sources, Carbine and AK-47 rifles, 17 rifle grenades and other arms and ammunition were recovered during the encounter. Security forces suspect that the terrorists were planning a big action in Jammu and Kashmir.(Source NDTV)

Renowned Kashmiri Comedian Bashir Ahmad Bhat ‘Kotur’ Passes Away at 65, Leaving a Cultural Legacy

Bashir Ahmad Bhat ‘Kotur’

The Kashmiri entertainment world mourns the loss of Bashir Ahmad Bhat, popularly known as Bashir Kotur, who passed away at the age of 65 on Monday afternoon at his residence in Hanjigund Chadoora, Budgam. Kotur, a beloved comedian and folk theatre artist, succumbed to multiple health complications, including stomach cancer, liver damage, and gall bladder issues, just a day after being discharged from a local hospital where he had been in the ICU.

Kotur was a household name in Kashmir, celebrated for his razor-sharp wit, cultural satire, and captivating performances that resonated with audiences across generations. His unique ability to blend humor with social commentary made him a standout figure in the region’s entertainment landscape. Kotur’s performances in traditional Kashmiri Bandh-e-Pather (folk theatre) skits and on local cable television channels brought laughter and reflection to countless homes, earning him a special place in the hearts of Kashmiris.

Born in Hanjigund Chadoora, Kotur’s journey in comedy began with humble roots, performing at local gatherings before rising to prominence through his distinctive style. His skits often highlighted the nuances of Kashmiri culture, addressing societal issues with humor that was both entertaining and thought-provoking. Whether poking fun at everyday life or delivering subtle critiques of social norms, Kotur’s work transcended mere comedy, becoming a cultural touchstone for the valley.

Family sources shared that Kotur had been battling severe health challenges for some time. Despite his deteriorating condition, his spirit remained unbroken, and his legacy as a performer continued to inspire those around him. His final days were spent at home, surrounded by loved ones, before he passed away peacefully on Monday. Funeral prayers were held in his native village later that day, attended by a large number of mourners, including fans, fellow artists, and community members.

Tributes have poured in from across Kashmir, with many recalling Kotur’s ability to bring joy even in challenging times. “Bashir Kotur was more than a comedian; he was a mirror to our society, reflecting our joys and struggles with unmatched humor,” said a local theatre artist who worked with him. Social media platforms, including X, have been flooded with messages of condolence, with fans sharing clips of his iconic performances and expressing grief over the loss of a cultural icon.

Kotur’s contribution to Kashmiri folk theatre and comedy is unparalleled. His work not only preserved the art of Bandh-e-Pather but also introduced it to younger audiences through television. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving a void that will be difficult to fill. As Kashmir bids farewell to one of its most cherished entertainers, Bashir Kotur’s legacy will live on through the laughter and memories he gifted to his people.

Omar Abdullah Reacts to ‘Operation Mahadev’ Reports, Calls for Parliament Debate on Pahalgam Attack Intelligence Failures

omar abdullah

Amid the reports that one of the terrorists involved in the April 22 Pahalgam attack was shot in the encouter ‘Operation Mahadev’, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said that the development is yet to be confirmed. However, he added that it will be a good thing if even one of them is killed.

Addressing reporters here, Chief Minister Abdullah said, “It’s not confirmed yet. It’s a good thing if it’s confirmed. From the day of the Pahalgam attack, whether it is the police, paramilitary, or the army, they are after them (terrorists). If even one of them is killed in an encounter today, it will be a good thing.”

His statement came amid reports that one of the terrorists involved in the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives, was shot today under Operation Mahadev.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Zone) Vidhi Kumar Birdi earlier today said that the identification of the three terrorists killed in ‘Operation Mahadev’ near Dachigam National Park in Srinagar today is “in process” and will “take some time.”

He confirmed that the operation in Harwan is still underway.

“Operation is still continuing. As per the interior reports, three bodies have been observed and seem to be neutralised. It will take us some time for identification, and parties are still inside,” IGP Kashmir Zone told mediapersons.

The Chief Minister welcomed the Parliament discussion on Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.

“Discussion on Operation Sindoor is fine, but before that, it is necessary to discuss Pahalgam. Recently, LG sahab said that there was definitely negligence in this. Intelligence and security failure played a role in this, so that should also be discussed in the Parliament, that after all, if there was an intelligence failure, a security failure, then who was held responsible for it. There will be a discussion on Operation Sindoor after that,” Abdullah said.

The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister further hoped for announcements on statehood issue during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

“We are hoping that we will get something in this session. If we don’t get anything, then we will talk after that. I will not go on strike, at least for now, as long as the parliament session is going on…” he said. (ANI)

Omar Abdullah Inaugurates Van Mahotsav 2025, Calls for Collective Action to Preserve Environment for Future Generations

Omar Abdullah

Climate change is real, and the signs are all around us. The earth and our environment are a heritage we must pass on to the next generations—if not improved, at least preserved in our lifetime, asserted Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as he inaugurated the Van Mahotsav 2025 celebrations organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department at Abhinav Theatre.

Let’s find joy in planting trees and gifting plants, he remarked, calling on people to transform the festival into a vibrant people’s movement.

He was joined by Javed Ahmed Rana, Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology and Environment and Tribal Affairs; Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani; Commissioner and Secretary to the Government, Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment, Sheetal Nanda; Secretary Tribal Affairs, Prasanna Ramaswamy G; Principal Chief Conservators of Forests; DDC Member (Dansal) Shamima Begum; besides senior officers from various departments.

The event was marked by broad community participation including tribal members, students, and citizens across the Union Territory.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasised that our actions today would have repercussions long afterwards. There needs to be a check on greed; only our needs must be met. Uncontrolled deforestation must stop. Genuine afforestation efforts are required to produce results that matter, not just statistics. He added that development is a need, but it should be judicious. There must be a balance, development carried out with sincere concern for the environment. For every tree uprooted, a hundred must be planted.

Reaffirming the government’s resolve, the Chief Minister said that the administration will ensure the benefits of the Forest Rights Act and minor forest produce reach every intended beneficiary. Addressing the youth and tribal communities, he celebrated the enduring value of trees and the importance of collective stewardship.

Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology and Environment, and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana recognised the unique responsibility of the tribal population in protecting forests. He emphasized that the Tribal Affairs Department must become the nodal agency for implementing the Forest Rights Act. The Minister detailed government initiatives for tribal welfare, with special focus on water conservation in Kandi areas through check dams, rainwater harvesting and percolation pits. He also highlighted youth-focussed employment opportunities under the Van Dhan Yojana and spoke of upcoming sustainable tourism plans currently being developed, such as eco trek activities. Referring to holistic empowerment, he mentioned the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, under which several projects have been proposed to support inclusion, infrastructure, and the saturation of government guarantees for tribal communities.

Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, reflected that forests are not just resources—they are living guardians that gift us firewood to warm our homes, fodder to feed our cattle, timber to build our shelters, and the very air we breathe to stay alive. He urged people to reconnect with the age-old traditions of tree planting, which once formed an integral part of rituals. These were not mere customs, he noted, but deeply rooted acts of gratitude and responsibility towards nature. The government, he assured, will make every effort to revive these traditions and ensure that the rights of forest dwellers, as well as the forests themselves, are upheld and protected. Development matters, but never at the cost of nature, he asserted.

The ceremony also witnessed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah handing over appointment letters to newly selected candidates in the Forest Department and felicitating individuals and organizations for their environmental contributions.

Operation Sindoor Debate to Dominate Parliament This Week; PM Modi Likely to Intervene

Parliamentary Panel

The floor leaders of the INDIA bloc parties will meet on Monday at 10 am to discuss the strategy for the second week of the monsoon session, with the Lok Sabha slated to take up discussion on Operation Sindoor on Monday and the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to initiate the discussion on Operation Sindhoor in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

A stalemate over opposition demands for discussion on issues being raised by them was broken on Friday following an all-party meeting. The government has been stating that it is willing to discuss Operation Sindoor and other issues subject to rules and permission of Chair.

Sources said that Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and BJP MPs Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey are expected to take part in the discussion in Lok Sabha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to intervene in the discussion in the Lok Sabha. He may also intervene in the discussion in the Rajya Sabha.

Sources said discussion on Operation Sindoor will begin in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

Rajnath Singh and Jaishankar will be among ministers who will take part in the discussion in the Rajya Sabha, sources said.

TDP’s Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi are expected to participate in the discussion on Op Sindoor in the Lok Sabha. The sources said the party has been allotted 30 minutes. From the Samajwadi Party, its chief, Akhilesh Yadav, and MP Rajiv Rai will participate in the debate.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the debate on Operation Sindoor will be held for 16 hours in the Lok Sabha on Monday (July 28) and for 16 hours in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (July 29).

“All issues cannot be discussed together… The opposition has raised several issues, like the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar and others. We have told them that Operation Sindoor will be discussed first. We will decide which issues to discuss after that. Operation Sindoor will be debated for 16 hours in the Lok Sabha on Monday (July 28) and for 16 hours in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (July 29),” Rijiju told reporters.

Opposition parties have been demanding a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor and have sought the government’s clarification over US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

The Opposition parties had been demanding PM Modi’s presence during the debate. Since PM Modi travelled abroad on a two-nation visit this week, the discussion has been scheduled for next week.

Rijiju also stated that the motion to remove Justice Yashwant Verma, from whose residence burnt wads of cash were recovered following a fire incident, will be moved in the Lok Sabha first, as per the rules. He said that the removal of Justice Verma should be a joint decision.

“We have been making efforts regarding the matter of Justice Yashwant Verma. We have clearly stated that it is not only the government’s efforts, but the entire Parliament is responsible for addressing the issue of corruption in the judiciary and removing judges from the Supreme Court or High Court. We should not be divided on this issue,” the Union Minister said.

Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Saturday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of double standards in its approach to judicial matters, particularly regarding Justice Verma and Justice Yadav.

Singhvi accused BJP of “selective outrage and silence” on the issues surrounding these two judges and alleged that BJP’s actions are driven more by optics than a genuine commitment to the law.

Opposition parties in Rajya Sabha in in December gave impeachment motion notice concerning Justice Yadav deals over his controversial speech delivered at a gathering organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

Singhvi, who addressed a press conference, accused BJP of “double standards” regarding judicial propriety, the anti-corruption movement, and judicial accountability, saying that their actions don’t match their words.

Opposition parties have also been demanding discussions on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and India’s foreign policy. Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have witnessed repeated adjournments since the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 21, with the two Houses transacting little business.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla called an all-party meeting on Friday to end the stalemate.
Before adjourning the House amid sloganeering by opposition members on Friday, Birla urged them to allow the House to function normally. He objected to opposition members displaying banners.

He said the stalemate is not good. “Come, there will be a discussion to end the stalemate. There will also be representatives from the government…If there is disagreement, it should be expressed as per House norms,” he said. (ANI)

Civil Society Forum

Civil Society Forum Kashmir (CSFK) strongly urges the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, the Health Minister, and the Secretary, Health & Medical Education Department to take immediate steps towards establishing a Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) centre in the Kashmir Valley.

FMGE is a critical screening test conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for Indian students who have completed their medical education abroad. Currently, there is no FMGE centre in Srinagar or anywhere in the Kashmir Valley, despite the fact that most Indian states have multiple centres to cater to local candidates.

A Kashmir Valley’s Disadvantage

Due to the absence of a centre in Kashmir, aspiring doctors must travel long distances to other states like Delhi, Punjab, or even down south. This results in:

Financial strain, Travel and accommodation challenges, Safety and weather-related concerns and Mental stress before such an important exam

Number of FMGE Centres in Other Indian States (June 2025 Session):

This will ensure; Equal opportunities for Kashmiri aspirants, Support for medical professionals returning from abroad, and Strengthening of the local healthcare ecosystem

Kashmiri Medical Graduates Forced to Travel Outside UT for FMGE Exam, Demand Centre in Srinagar

MBBS abroad

Medical students from Kashmir who obtained their degrees from foreign universities will have to travel outside the Union Territory to appear for the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE), also known as the Screening Test, as there are no designated exam centres in Jammu and Kashmir.

The exam is conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) and is mandatory for Indian citizens with foreign medical degrees to obtain a license to practice medicine in India.

The absence of exam centres in Kashmir has triggered concern among students and their families, who have appealed to the government to set up exam centres in Srinagar to avoid logistical and financial burdens.

Several students said they are facing difficulties in arranging travel and accommodation in other states such as Punjab and Delhi, especially during the current academic and weather conditions.

Ruqaya Bano, a medical graduate, said, “I have to travel all the way to Chandigarh to write the exam.

It is not just costly, but also exhausting, especially when we have been preparing for months.”

Sameer Ahmad, another student who studied in Kazakhstan, said, “We don’t understand why there are no centres in Kashmir. It feels like we are being ignored.”

Parents also expressed their concern over the lack of local exam facilities. “Our children already go through so much stress preparing for this exam. Travelling far from home adds to their pressure,” Aijaz Dar, father of a medical graduate told KNS.

Shaista Jan, whose daughter studied in Uzbekistan, said, “Not every family can afford to send their children to other states and manage everything on their own.”

Responding to the issue, a senior official in the Health and Medical Education Department told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that the concerns of the students and their families have been received. The matter will be taken into consideration very soon.”–(KNS)
