Police Raid Three Locations in ₹55 Lakh Wild Garlic Fraud Case in Anantnag

Wild Garlic Fraud Case

Police in Anantnag on Wednesday conducted raids at three locations in the district in connection with an ongoing probe into a ₹55 lakh wild garlic fraud case registered under FIR No. 126/2025 at Police Station Anantnag.

The case involves three accused — Tasaduq Hussain Dar, Abdul Gani Dar, and Mohammad Iqbal Wani — who are already in custody for allegedly running a sophisticated fraud racket. According to police, the trio floated multiple fake business ventures, including real estate, fruit trade, and a bogus wild garlic enterprise, to dupe investors.

Their arrest earlier followed a complaint from a victim who alleged he was cheated of ₹55 lakh in a fraudulent wild garlic deal. Police said the accused lured victims with promises of high returns and later resorted to criminal intimidation when repayment was sought.

Wednesday’s raids were carried out to gather more evidence and identify other possible victims or accomplices. “The case is being investigated as an organised financial crime, and all leads are being pursued,” officials said.

Srinagar Police, FSSAI Bust Rotten Meat Supply Racket, Seize Cold Storage in Parimpora

FSSAI Bust Rotten Meat

In a joint operation, the Srinagar Police and the Food Safety Department conducted raids at multiple locations across the city, targeting vendors suspected of selling unhygienic and expired meat products.

During the operation, substantial quantities of rotten meat were seized and destroyed on the spot under relevant sections of Food Safety and Standards Act.

In one such action, Srinagar Police in collaboration with officials of the Food Safety and Standards Association of India ( FSSAI ) raided cold storage unit in Parimpora where rotten meat was stored, which was seized, subsequently leading to the seizure of the cold storage under relevant section of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Officials confirmed that the action is part of an intensified drive to safeguard public health and ensure strict adherence to food safety standards.

Similarly, acting on credible input received at Police Station Zakoora, authorities identified Ab Hameed Kuchay, a resident of Soura and operator of Sunshine Foods located at SICOP Zakoora, as a key suspect. He is alleged to be involved in a criminal conspiracy with Arif Ahmad Shah, a resident of Baghat Barzulla, to supply decomposed meat unfit for consumption in large quantities to restaurants and hotels across Srinagar.

Police stated that this deliberate act of distributing rotten meat poses a serious threat to public health and constitutes a grave offence under applicable laws.

Consequently, FIR No. 48/2025 has been registered at Police Station Zakoora under sections 271, 275, and 61(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway.

Srinagar Police affirms that inspections and legal action will continue in collaboration with concerned departments in the coming days to ensure strict compliance and accountability across the food supply chain, in the interests of public health and safety.

Mehbooba Mufti Slams Centre’s Plan to Nominate MLAs in J&K, Calls It a Blow to Democracy

Mehbooba Mufti

Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday said the Centre nominating five members to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly after holding elections is a “blatant subversion of democratic principles”.

She was responding to media reports which said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has informed the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court that the Lieutenant Governor can nominate five MLAs to the Legislative Assembly without the aid and advice of the elected government.

“GOI’s decision to nominate 5 MLAs in J&K after holding elections is a blatant subversion of democratic principles. Nowhere else in the country does the Centre handpick legislators to override the public mandate. In India’s only Muslim-majority region, long marred by conflict, this move feels less like governance and more like control,” Mufti said in a post on X.

“Following the illegal bifurcation of the state, skewed delimitation and discriminatory seat reservations, this nomination is yet another body blow to the idea of democracy in J&K. Representation must be earned through the people’s vote not granted by central decree,” the former chief minister said.

“This cannot be allowed to become the norm. Hope @OmarAbdullah government rises to the occasion by challenging this undemocratic precedent because silence now would be complicity later,” she added.

Air India to Suspend Delhi–Washington DC Flights from September 1 Amid Fleet Retrofit and Airspace Closure

Air India San Francisco

Air India on Monday announced the suspension of its services between Delhi and Washington DC, effective September 1, due to a combination of operational factors, to ensure the reliability and integrity of the airline’s overall route network.

The suspension is primarily driven by the planned shortfall in Air India’s fleet, as the airline commenced retrofitting 26 of its Boeing 787-8 aircraft last month. This extensive retrofit programme, aimed at significantly enhancing customer experience, necessitates a prolonged unavailability of multiple aircraft at any given time until at least the end of 2026.

That, coupled with the continued closure of airspace over Pakistan, impacts the airline’s long-haul operations, leading to longer flight routings and increased operational complexity.

Customers with Air India bookings to or from Washington, DC, beyond September 1, 2025, will be contacted and offered alternative travel arrangements, including rebooking on other flights or full refunds, as per their individual preferences.

Air India customers will continue to have the options of one-stop flights to Washington DC via four US gateways – New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, and San Francisco – with the airlines interline partners, Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, allowing customers to travel on a single itinerary with their baggage checked through to the final destination.

Air India will continue to operate non-stop flights between India and six destinations in North America, including Toronto and Vancouver in Canada. (ANI)

Omar Abdullah Orders Crackdown on Unsafe Meat in J&K — Entry Check Posts, Raids, and Jail for Violators

Omar Abdullah Orders Crackdown

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today chaired a high-level meeting to review the ongoing food safety enforcement campaign in the wake of recent seizures of unsafe meat and meat products, particularly in the Kashmir Valley.

The Chief Minister directed exemplary punitive action against those found storing or selling unsafe food, emphasising that offenders posing risks to public health must be prosecuted under the relevant provisions of the Food Safety & Standards Act. He called for criminal proceedings against the most serious violators.

“The grave problem appears to have remain unchecked and unnoticed for too long. The unscrupulous elements have played with health and lives of people. This has to stop and those deliberately involved in playing with public health must face the law.” Chief Minister said.

“I appreciate officials for launching the drive and exposing the dangerous rot in our food chain. There can be no compromise on public health and the drive will continue.

There will be an audit of the concerned departments and the mechanism to stop import, sale and use of the unhygienic meat and other food items,” CM added.

To tighten quality control, the Chief Minister ordered the establishment of entry-point check posts and testing laboratories at Lakhanpur and Qazigund to screen mutton, chicken, and other perishable items entering Jammu & Kashmir.

He further directed that Food Testing Laboratories be set up at every district headquarters, instead of limiting such facilities to Jammu and Srinagar, thereby significantly enhancing the Government’s enforcement capacity. No meat should be sold and used without proper clearance. The Chief Minister also emphasised that the Food Safety and Drugs Organization would be further strengthened to ensure rigorous monitoring and swift action against violations.

The Chief Minister further instructed intensified inspection drives across all districts, with Deputy Commissioners personally leading surprise market checks to ensure strict compliance with prescribed hygiene and quality standards. All mobile food-testing vans are to be deployed immediately to support these operations.

While acknowledging the justified public and media concern, the CM urged citizens to approach the concerned authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands. He cautioned against vigilante actions and directed the Food Safety Department to follow due procedure, work with the police for surprise raids, and avoid harassment of traders who comply with safety regulations.

The CM also ordered the registration of all food distributors, traders, and vendors, bringing them under a formal licensing framework. An inter-departmental committee will be constituted to ensure coordination, efficiency, and smooth enforcement, particularly for the distribution and sale of safe, hygienic, fresh, and properly labelled perishable items such as meat and chicken.

Departments have been instructed to verify that meat supplies originate from safe sources, that the cold chain is maintained, and that cold stores are equipped with deep-freezing facilities.

The CM took serious note of the use of harmful chemicals, unauthorized synthetic additives, and colouring agents, stressing their potential health hazards.

Health experts, including the Director of SKIMS and the Principal of GMC Srinagar, briefed the meeting on the ill-effects of food adulteration and the health risks posed by unsafe food, urging changes in food habits to reduce the rising incidence of chronic illnesses.

The meeting was attended by Health & Education Minister Sakina Itoo, Agriculture Minister Javed Ahmed Dar, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Minister Satish Sharma, Advisor to the CM Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary to the CM Dheeraj Gupta, Principal Secretary Agriculture Shailender Kumar, Commissioner Secretary Industries & Commerce Vikramjeet Singh, Commissioner Secretary Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Saurabh Bhagat, Secretary Health & Medical Education Dr Abid Rashid Shah, Director SKIMS Dr M. Ashraf Ganai, Principal GMC Srinagar Dr Iffat Hassan, Commissioner Food Safety Smita Sethi, and other senior officials.

Dr Abid Rashid Shah presented details of recent enforcement activities, seizures of unsafe meat and poultry, penalties prescribed under law, and the roles of various departments, including Food Safety, Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Agriculture, Industries & Commerce, Home, Housing & Urban Development, and District Administration. He also outlined an immediate 30-day action plan involving:
• Mapping all food businesses and vendors,
• Intensified inspection drives,
• Public reporting campaigns via “Dial 104”,
• Community engagement initiatives, and
• Establishing entry check posts at Lakhanpur and Qazigund.

Concluding the meeting, the CM reiterated the government’s commitment to take concerted and coordinated action to curb violations in the sale, storage, and distribution of perishable food items—particularly meat, meat-based products, and dairy—ensuring the highest standards of consumer safety and public health.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealed people to remain vigilant and not to buy any processed meat from unauthorized vendors.

Residents of Sallar Anantnag Decry ‘Unjust’ Daily Power Cuts

Electricity

Residents of Sallar in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district have voiced strong resentment against what they call “unnecessary and selective” daily power cuts imposed by the local electricity department.

Locals told News of Kashmir that every day they face prolonged shutdowns, while surrounding areas enjoy uninterrupted electricity. “When we contact department officials, they make excuses and claim there is an official shutdown,” a resident alleged, “but there’s no outage anywhere else nearby — only Sallar is targeted.”

The residents suspect the shutdown is a localised decision rather than an official order, and have urged higher authorities to intervene.

“We want our complaint to reach the top officials immediately,” said another local. “If this issue is not resolved soon, the public will be forced to protest. This selective blackout must end, and those responsible should be held accountable.”

The residents have appealed for immediate restoration of regular power supply, warning that continued neglect will only escalate public anger in the area.

AJKSA Holds Full-Day Marsiya and Majlis-e-Aza at Ghundhasibhat

Marsiya and Majlis-e-Aza

The All JK Shia Association (AJKSA) today held a deeply spiritual full-day program of Marsiya and Majlis-e-Aza at Ghundhasibhat, drawing a large number of mourners from across the Valley.

The day began with soulful recitations of Marsiya that continued until 4:30 pm, after which AJKSA President, Molvi Imran Reza Ansari, delivered a powerful Majlis-e-Aza. In his address, Molvi Imran spoke at length about the wilayah of Imam Ali (AS), describing it as a divine guardianship and a protective fortress for believers, where loyalty to Imam Ali (AS) is a path to both truth and salvation.

Quoting the well-known Prophetic saying, “Ali is with the Truth and the Truth is with Ali,” he reminded the gathering that Imam Ali’s (AS) life was a constant embodiment of justice, courage, and unwavering adherence to the message of Islam. He stressed that the love for Imam Ali (AS) and his family is inseparable from the love for Imam Hussain (AS), as both represent the essence of Haq, truth itself.

Molvi Imran expressed his gratitude to all those who had come from various parts of Kashmir to attend the Majlis of Imam Hussain (AS), noting that this was a reflection of their deep devotion.

“Just two days ago, we gathered in Zadibal for Majlis-e-Asad with the same Zakirs and Molvis, and yet today, the love of Imam Hussain (AS) has brought you all together again,” he said. He thanked the people of Ghundhasibhat for opening their homes and hearts to the azadars and extended appreciation to the volunteers from Ghundhasibhat, Chinabal, and other nearby areas for managing the event with dedication and efficiency.

In his concluding remarks, he expressed thanks to the Jammu and Kashmir Police for their arrangements, particularly SSP Srinagar, SDPO Bemina, and SHO Parimpora, for ensuring smooth conduct and security of the gathering. He also acknowledged the support of KPDCL, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, and the Jal Shakti Department for their timely assistance and facilities that contributed to the successful organization of the program.(KNS)
