Continuing its efforts to eradicate the menace of drugs from society, Police have arrested a drug peddler in Shopian and recovered contraband substance from his possession.

A spokesperson said that Police team of Police Post Wachi at a checkpoint established at Melhura near Laktipora, intercepted a suspicious person identified as Zubair Manzoor Bhat son of Manzoor Ahmad Bhat resident of Arwani Bijbehara. During search, approximately 290 grams of charas like substance was recovered from his possession and was subsequently arrested. Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 57/2025 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Zainapora and investigation has been initiated.

People are requested to cooperate with police in curbing the menace of drugs from the society. We reassure the community members that police will act tough against the criminals as per law.

Jammu–Srinagar Highway Closed Due to Shooting Stones, Heavy Rains and Bad Weather

As a precautionary measure, all types of vehicular movement have been stopped along the Jammu–Srinagar Highway (NH44) due to shooting stones at multiple locations, officials said on Monday.

According to the official, “The Jammu–Srinagar NHW (NH-44) is closed due to shooting stones at several places.” He added, “All types of vehicular movement have been stopped as a safety measure.”

The official further said that bad weather conditions persist along the highway. “There is heavy rainfall across the entire NHW,” he further added.Authorities have advised commuters to avoid travelling until the weather improves and the road is cleared.

As per another official, the highway is also blocked at Monkey Morh and the Maroog area of Ramban. “Restoration work is going on,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra has termed the recent cloudburst and flash floods in Kishtwar as “very tragic,” and raising concerns over lapses in preventive measures and rescue operations.

Karra said, “This is a very tragic incident. We are going to oversee the rescue operations. An advisory was issued 48 hours ago for this, but the question is how people were allowed to go there even after that… There are definitely some gaps in the rescue operations…”
Commenting on the sudden flooding in Kathua, he added, “This is a natural disaster, but we need to see whether the government and its related departments are fully prepared, whether the rescue operations are happening on time or not.”
In Kishtwar, efforts were focused on restoring essential services. Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar said, “There were huge boulders here; they were blasted yesterday. The boulders are being broken down. Rope breakers have been installed due to the possibility that some bodies might be trapped under them. The power supply and water supply have been restored. A bridge is being built here with the help of the Army… All the passengers stranded in Machail were safely evacuated yesterday.”
Meanwhile, in Kathua district, there atleast seven people have died in a landslide triggered by heavy rain. The cloudburst in Kathua, which occurred on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, also damaged a railway track, the national highway, and the local police station. Rescue and relief operations are underway in Kathua and Kishtwar, officials said on Sunday.
Following the cloudburst and landslides, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Central government was closely monitoring the situation and assured all possible support. In a post on X, Shah wrote, “Spoke with the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the cloudburst in Kathua. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out by the local administration, and NDRF teams have also been rushed to the site. Assured of every support from the Modi government. We stand firmly behind our sisters and brothers of J&K.”
The Indian Army is leading ground operations, supported by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), police, and the local administration. (ANI)

14-Year-Old Girl Found Dead in Ganderbal’s Sehpora After Alleged Kidnapping; Police Launch Probe

The body of a 14-year-old girl was recovered on Sunday from Batsar Road in Sehpora area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

The deceased hails from Sehpora area.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), as per initial reports, the victim was with her sister when she was allegedly kidnapped.Her sister, frightened, managed to escape, but later the minor’s body was discovered in an open field near her village.

Upon receiving the information, a police team rushed to the spot and took the body for medico-legal formalities.Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ganderbal, Khalil Ahmad Poswal, also visited the spot.Speaking to the media, he confirmed that a case has been registered, while a forensic team from Srinagar has joined the investigation.

He assured that the accused would be traced and brought to justice.Meanwhile, locals staged a protest, demanding justice for the victim and stringent punishment for those involved.The exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained, and further investigation is underway, the officials said—(KNO)

Indian Army Rescues Pilgrims After Kishtwar Cloudburst Near Machail Mata Temple; 55 Dead, Dozens Missing

The Indian Army and disaster response teams are rescuing pilgrims stranded at the Machail Mata Temple after a cloudburst in Kishtwar district on Sunday that has killed at least 55 people.

Visuals from the site show army personnel evacuating stranded pilgrims and recovering bodies from the affected area.

Cleaning workers at the temple expressed their willingness to assist in relief operations. One worker told ANI, “On July 22, I went to Machail, and I am a cleaning worker there. Today I came back. Everything is closed there. People who had their carts and hotels are returning here. We also want to lend a hand (for the relief work). When we heard that many people were dead and missing after the cloudburst, we were shocked. We saw the images on social media.”

Another worker estimated that around 100 people may still be stranded at the temple. He said, “I am a resident of Kishtwar and work as a cleaning worker. A lot of people have died, and we are still scared. If the mishap would not have happened, a lot of people would have been at the temple. There might be about 100 people there (in Machail).”

Expressing grief, he added, “I clean the temple. This should not have happened. There is nothing left to see, we are shedding tears.”

Meanwhile, Punjab resident Mandeep Saini made an emotional appeal to the government to locate his wife and mother-in-law, who went missing in the August 14 cloudburst in Chasoti village. Saini had visited Kishtwar to drop his wife at her parents’ home for Rakshabandhan on August 9. She went for darshan at Machail Mata Mandir on August 12, after Saini returned to Punjab.

He told ANI, “The remaining six people with them are coming back. It’s been four days, and we still have no clue where the two of them are. My mind is not functioning. I last spoke to her at Udhampur station… All of us are really worried. I have only one request for the government: please locate both of them. I have no other request except to please find them.”

General Officer Commanding Counter Insurgency Force – Delta, Major General APS Bal, said security forces are working to rescue as many people as possible. Highlighting the Indian Army’s rapid response, he added that troops reached the site within 45 minutes of the disaster. (ANI)

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Chashoti village in Kishtwar to review the devastation caused by a cloudburst and flash floods along the Machail Mata Yatra route. The disaster claimed at least 60 lives and left many others missing. Omar Abdullah met with affected families, assured immediate support, and personally oversaw ongoing rescue and relief operations in the area.

Announcing ex-gratia relief from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, Abdullah declared ₹2 lakh for the families of each deceased, ₹1 lakh for the severely injured, and ₹50,000 for those with minor injuries. For property damage, ₹1 lakh was allocated for fully damaged houses, ₹50,000 for severely damaged ones, and ₹25,000 for partially damaged structures. The Chief Minister said that the assistance aimed to provide immediate relief to those grappling with sudden loss and destruction.

In addition to financial aid, Omar Abdullah promised long-term rehabilitation measures for the victims. He emphasised the need for scientific mapping of vulnerable regions and committed to strengthening disaster-management infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. His assurance highlighted the government’s intent to not only respond to the tragedy but also to build resilience against future natural calamities in the region.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha spoke to the Hon’ble Union Home Minister Amit Shah and briefed him on the ongoing rescue and relief operations in rain-triggered landslides-affected areas of Kathua District.

The Lieutenant Governor has expressed his grief and anguish over the loss of lives in the tragic incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved families.

He directed the senior Civil and Police Officials to coordinate and execute rescue and aid efforts in the affected areas and ensure on-site medical assistance.

In a post on X, the Lieutenant Governor said:“Deeply anguished by the loss of lives in the devastating rain-triggered landslides in several areas of Kathua. The tragedy is mind-numbing. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday expressed solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of a cloudburst that struck Kathua district.

In a post on X, Amit Shah said he had spoken to both the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister of J&K to take stock of the situation.

He informed that relief and rescue operations were underway with the local administration leading efforts, supported by teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) that have been rushed to the affected area.

“The Modi government stands firmly behind our sisters and brothers of J&K in this hour of crisis. Every possible support will be extended,” the Home Minister assured.

A family in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district is living in shock and grief after their relative, Somnath, went missing during the devastating flash flood triggered by a cloudburst on August 14. The disaster struck during the Machail Mata Yatra pilgrimage, leaving around 55 people dead and dozens missing.

Somnath’s son, Pawan Kumar, recounted the terrifying moments when the flood hit. He said they were working at their hotel, serving food to visiting tourists, when the water suddenly surged.

“At that time, we were in the hotel we had set up, serving tourists. Suddenly, there was a flood. We ran for safety, and when we looked back, nothing was left,” Pawan told ANI.

After the chaos, the family could not locate Somnath. “When we looked for our father, he was not there. We thought he must have come home, but he wasn’t. Then we understood that he had become a victim of the flood,” he said, urging authorities to speed up search operations.

“The police are saying that they are looking for him, but nothing has been found so far. We request the government to help us find our father as soon as possible,” Pawan added.

Meanwhile, security forces have intensified rescue and relief operations across the region. General Officer Commanding (GOC) Counter Insurgency Force Delta, Major General A. P. S. Bal, highlighted the Indian Army’s rapid response.

“The Indian Army was the first to respond to this disaster, reaching the site within 45 minutes. All the security forces are trying their best to rescue as many people as possible and provide relief to those affected,” he said.

The Indian Army is spearheading operations on the ground, supported by the NDRF, SDRF, police, BRO, and local administration. Rescue teams are continuing their search for those missing, as families like Somnath’s wait anxiously for answers.
