Supreme Court Allows Aadhaar as Proof for Bihar Voter Re-Inclusion Ahead of Elections

Supreme Court

Bihar voters challenging their exclusion from the electoral roll before an election later this year can present the Aadhaar as proof of residence, the Supreme Court said Friday afternoon, directing the Election Commission to add the government-issued ID to a list of 11 others.

The top court – hearing petitions contesting the ‘special intensive revision’ of the voter list – said applications for re-inclusion can be submitted with either one of those 11 or the Aadhaar.

The court also had some strong comments for political parties in Bihar, demanding to know why they – many of whom have opposed the revision on grounds it was ‘designed to disenfranchise’ communities that traditionally vote for them – had not assisted the over 65 lakh deleted voters.

“Political parties are not doing their jobs…” the court said, echoing the poll panel’s note that objections had filed been by individual politicians, i.e., MPs and MLAs, but not the parties.

J&K Govt Warns Meat Sellers, Cold Storages, and E-Commerce Platforms Against Unsafe Frozen Meat Sales

Govt Warns Meat Sellers

The Jammu and Kashmir government has issued a stern warning to meat sellers, cold storage operators, and e-commerce platforms against selling frozen meat and poultry without proper labelling or storage. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA), under the Drugs & Food Control Organisation, has announced that violators will face strict penalties, including fines, stock seizure, and even imprisonment under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006.In a public notice issued, the department directed all Food Business Operators (FBOs)—including manufacturers, processors, transporters, retailers, wholesalers, and online platforms—to strictly comply with the FSSA and the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2020.The directive, officials said, aims to safeguard public health and ensure the highest standards of food safety in handling, storage, distribution, and sale of frozen raw meat, chicken, and related products. The notice clarified definitions of fresh, chilled, and frozen meat. Fresh meat is sold soon after slaughter without preservation; chilled meat is kept between 0°C and 4°C for short-term shelf life; and frozen meat is preserved at –18°C or lower for long-term storage and transport.Frozen meat and related products must remain at –18°C or below throughout production to sale, while chilled storage at 4°C is permissible only for two to four days. Products stored at –18°C or below should be consumed within 12 months of freezing. All establishments have been directed to install calibrated temperature monitoring devices and maintain accurate records for inspections. As per the labeling regulations, every frozen meat or chicken package must display the product name, complete list of ingredients, non-vegetarian declaration with the prescribed symbol, net quantity, batch or lot number, date of manufacture/packing, expiry or use-by date, storage conditions, and the manufacturer or importer’s complete address, along with the FSSAI license number and logo. For e-commerce platforms, the shelf life at delivery must be at least 30% of the total shelf life or 45 days before expiry, whichever is earlier. Mandatory information must be made available to consumers before purchase, and product images must be displayed online.Packaging materials must be food-grade, safe, non-toxic, and compliant with FSSAI standards. Products labelled as Halal Certified must also meet all FSSAI safety, hygiene, and labelling norms. The department warned that non-compliance would invite strict enforcement, including seizure of stock and heavy monetary penalties—up to Rs 5 lakh for sub-standard products, Rs 3 lakh for misbranding or missing labels, Rs 1 lakh for insanitary conditions, Rs 2 lakh for selling without FSSAI registration, and Rs 10 lakh for operating without an FSSAI license. Offences involving unsafe food can lead to imprisonment of up to six years and a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh. The FDA has directed all FBOs to review and upgrade their operations, ensure full compliance, maintain updated records, and delist any non-compliant products from outlets and online platforms. It warned that failure to comply will result in swift legal action without further notice. On August 20, the High Court of J&K and Ladakh issued notice to the J&K government for its response to a PIL seeking judicial intervention to prevent the sale, storage, distribution, and transportation of rotten, unhygienic, and unsafe meat, poultry, and fish products in J&K.The Food Safety Department officials said they have sent food samples, including meat, chicken, and other contaminated food items, to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) laboratory in Ghaziabad for advanced testing; however, the reports are awaited. The move followed a crackdown on the sale of rotten and substandard food items, including chicken, meat, kebabs, rista, and goshtaba across Kashmir and Jammu as well.

Mohsin Ali Kand Wins First Gold for J&K at Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025

From rowing a Shikara at Dal Lake to paddling his way to national glory, Mohsin Ali Kand has come a long way. Mohsin made Jammu and Kashmir proud, winning the first gold medal of the Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025 on Thursday.

Seventeen-year-old Mohsin won gold in the 1000-metre men’s Kayaking event, clocking 4:12:717s. It was a career highlight for the youngster.

As Mohsin stepped out of Dal Lake, he was greeted by a jubilant home crowd, even as he failed to hold back tears of joy and hugged his coach Bilquis Mir, a former international and an Olympic judge.

It was an overwhelming moment for Mohsin, a 12th standard student of SP Higher Secondary School, who, to fulfil his dream of representing India at the international events, rows a Shikara on the Dal Lake after attending his school to earn money for buying his diet.

After clinching the gold, Mohsin, the son of a lower-middle-class carpenter, Fida Hussain Kand, said he had worked very hard for it and credited his success to his father.

“It was my father who was instrumental in me taking up water sports. The lanky Mohsin added that despite economic hardships and taking care of a five-member family, his father ensured that he developed a keen interest in water sports from a very young age,” Mohsin said as quoted from SAI Media.

“Water sports are my passion and I dream of representing India at the international level. To see my dreams actualise, I row a Shikara and share the burden of my family and buying the necessary diet that I require for training,” Mohsin said.

A resident of Kand Mohalla inside Dal Lake, who started his water sports journey as a seven-year-old, Mohsin said, apart from his father, he would also credit the Jammu and Kashmir Kayaking and Canoeing Association.

“They are also instrumental in my success as the association provided me with the necessary training and infrastructure,” he said.

Mohsin’s achievement is noteworthy, considering that, despite not participating in many national events, he emerged triumphant over other athletes with more experience and international exposure.

“It is very difficult for me to purchase the necessary diet for participating in such events as professional water sports athletes are supposed to have a protein-rich, carbohydrate-rich, electrolyte-rich diet, which I am not able to afford due to meagre means,” Mohsin said.

However, Mohsin did not let this come in his way of success and, with his strong determination, was able to overcome all the hurdles.

“The thing that really keeps me going is the burning desire to represent the country at international events like the Asian Games, World Championship and Olympics,” he said.

Mohsin believes that practising on the waters of Dal Lake in high-altitude Kashmir helps develop better stamina, which other athletes from across the country lack.

“Most of them come from the plains. So I have a strong feeling that if I continue to work hard the way I have, it is not far from now when I will represent the country in international events,” he said.

While rowing the Shikara after returning from school every day kept him humble, the gold medal at the Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025 can become the much-needed impetus that his career needs. (ANI)

JDA Launches Anti-Encroachment Drive in Jammu, 110 Kanal Land Retrieved

JDA Launches Anti-Encroachment Drive

The Jammu Development Authority (JDA), under the leadership of Vice Chairman Rupesh Kumar and in coordination with the District Administration, on Thursday launched a large-scale anti-encroachment operation across key locations in Jammu district. The drive focused on removing unauthorized constructions and reclaiming illegally occupied JDA land, particularly in the Sidhra, Majeen, and Rangoora areas of Tehsil Jammu Khas.

During the operation, more than 20 illegal permanent and semi-permanent structures were demolished, including newly constructed buildings and boundary walls erected without permission. Authorities noted that the targeted areas had recently seen a rise in encroachments, necessitating swift action.

As a result, approximately 110 kanal of land was successfully retrieved and brought back under official possession. To prevent fresh encroachments, fencing and warning signboards are being installed on the reclaimed land.

The demolition activities were executed smoothly with the full support of the District Administration, ensuring coordinated action across multiple sites.

Reiterating its zero-tolerance policy towards illegal encroachments, the JDA warned that strict legal action would be taken against violators. Citizens were strongly advised to refrain from unauthorized construction or occupation of government land.

The Authority also urged the public to verify land ownership and obtain proper approvals before initiating any construction activity, reaffirming its commitment to safeguard public land across Jammu.

Aditya Kumar

Aditya displayed remarkable courage as he took a bold risk on the ₹1 crore question, using his 50:50 lifeline before locking in his answer. His confidence paid off as he gave the correct response, earning thunderous applause from the audience and heartfelt praise from host Amitabh Bachchan.

The ₹1 Crore Question

The question that made him a crorepati was:

“Which of these elements is named after the scientist who isolated Plutonium, the element that was used to make the first atomic bomb?”

Options:
A. Rutherfordium
B. Fermium
C. Seaborgium
D. Meitnerium

Aditya chose C. Seaborgium, named after American chemist Glenn T. Seaborg, who played a pivotal role in the discovery of plutonium. His correct answer secured him the ₹1 crore jackpot.

The Unanswered ₹7 Crore Question

“Which Japanese artist visited India in the 1930s and painted a celebrated series depicting the Taj Mahal, the Sanchi Stupa and the Ellora Caves?”

Unsure of the answer, he wisely decided to quit, taking home the guaranteed prize of ₹1 crore instead of risking it all.

27-Year-Old Urfi Jan from Shopian Dies Under Suspicious Circumstances, Police Begin Probe Under BNSS

Dead body

Atragic incident shook the Takibal Reban area of Zainapora, Shopian, in south Kashmir. A 27-year-old woman, identified as Urfi Jan, wife of Showkat Ahmad Lone, passed away under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws’ home. The mother of two daughters was brought to Yaripora hospital in an unconscious state and was declared dead on arrival. The sudden and mysterious nature of her death has prompted her family to demand a thorough investigation, suspecting foul play by her in-laws. This incident has reignited concerns about domestic issues and the safety of women in marital homes in the region, with the family calling for justice.

Details of the Incident

According to reports, police at Zainapora Police Station received information on the morning of August 21, 2025, that Urfi Jan had been brought to Yaripora hospital in a critical condition. A senior police officer confirmed that doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival, noting that her condition appeared suspicious. The police have since initiated proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which pertains to inquiries into unnatural deaths, to investigate the circumstances surrounding her passing. While the exact cause of death remains under investigation, pending a postmortem report, the family’s allegations have added urgency to the probe.

Urfi Jan, originally from Anantnag, was married to Showkat Ahmad Lone and resided with his family in Takibal Reban, Shopian. She leaves behind two young daughters, amplifying the tragedy’s impact on the community. The family’s grief has been compounded by their suspicion that Urfi’s death was not accidental, leading to demands for a swift and transparent investigation.

Family’s Allegations and Demand for Justice

Urfi Jan’s family has alleged that she faced harassment at the hands of her in-laws, a claim that echoes similar cases in the region. While specific details about the nature of the alleged harassment have not been publicly disclosed, the family insists that her death was not natural and that her in-laws may be responsible. They have called on the authorities to conduct a thorough probe, including a detailed postmortem to ascertain the cause of death, and to hold those responsible accountable.

This incident recalls a 2021 case in Anantnag, where a woman’s suicide led her family to set her in-laws’ house ablaze, alleging harassment drove her to take her life. Such parallels underscore the recurring issue of domestic disputes escalating to tragic outcomes in the region, fueling the family’s urgency for justice.

Police Response and Investigation

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken the case seriously, initiating proceedings under Section 194 of the BNSS, which allows for an inquest to determine the cause of death in suspicious circumstances. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities awaiting the postmortem report to confirm whether Urfi’s death resulted from natural causes, suicide, or foul play. A senior police officer stated that further details would be shared as the probe progresses, emphasizing a commitment to uncovering the truth.

The police have also engaged with the family to gather statements and evidence, though no arrests have been reported as of now. The focus remains on ensuring a fair and comprehensive investigation to address the family’s concerns and deliver justice.

Broader Context: Domestic Issues in Jammu and Kashmir

Urfi Jan’s death adds to a troubling pattern of cases involving women dying under suspicious circumstances at their in-laws’ homes, often linked to allegations of domestic harassment or dowry disputes. In 2021, a similar incident in Anantnag saw a woman’s family accuse her in-laws of driving her to suicide through harassment. The subsequent arson attack on the in-laws’ home highlighted the intense emotions such cases evoke.

Across India, cases of suspicious deaths in marital homes often involve allegations of dowry-related harassment or domestic violence, as seen in incidents reported in Tamil Nadu, Kolkata, and Kerala. While it is unclear if dowry was a factor in Urfi’s case, the family’s claims of harassment align with these broader trends, raising questions about the safety and treatment of women in certain households.

Community and Official Reactions

The Shopian community has been deeply affected by Urfi Jan’s death, with neighbors and locals expressing shock and solidarity with her family. The incident has sparked discussions about the need for stronger measures to protect women from domestic abuse and ensure swift justice in such cases. Community leaders have urged the authorities to expedite the investigation and provide support to Urfi’s two daughters, who now face an uncertain future without their mother.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration, already grappling with the aftermath of the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, faces additional pressure to address this tragedy transparently. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust through thorough investigations, particularly in cases involving potential wrongdoing.

Challenges in the Investigation

Investigating suspicious deaths in marital homes presents unique challenges, particularly in regions like Shopian, where social and cultural dynamics can complicate inquiries. The absence of visible external injuries, as often noted in such cases, requires forensic expertise to determine the cause of death accurately. Additionally, gathering reliable witness testimonies and navigating family disputes can delay justice, as seen in similar cases across India.

The police must also balance the family’s demands for swift action with the need for a meticulous investigation to avoid wrongful accusations. The postmortem report will be critical in clarifying whether Urfi’s death was a result of natural causes, suicide, or homicide, guiding the next steps in the case.

The Road Ahead

As the investigation unfolds, Urfi Jan’s family continues to mourn her loss while seeking answers and accountability. The case has drawn attention to the broader issue of women’s safety in marital homes, prompting calls for stronger legal protections and awareness campaigns to address domestic harassment. Community organizations and women’s rights groups in Jammu and Kashmir may use this incident to advocate for systemic changes, including better support for victims of domestic abuse and stricter enforcement of laws against harassment.

For now, the focus remains on the ongoing probe, with the hope that it will provide clarity and closure for Urfi’s family. Her two daughters, now without their mother, face an uncertain future, underscoring the profound human cost of this tragedy.

Conclusion

The suspicious death of Urfi Jan in Shopian is a heartbreaking reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by women in certain marital environments. As her family demands justice and a thorough investigation, the authorities face the challenge of uncovering the truth behind her untimely passing. The case highlights the need for greater awareness and action to prevent such tragedies, ensuring that women like Urfi are protected and that their families receive the justice they seek. As Shopian mourns, the hope is that this incident will spur meaningful change, safeguarding the lives and dignity of women in the region.
