Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk and Supporters Begin Indefinite Fast After Detention at Delhi Border

Sonam Wangchuk

Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent climate activist, along with approximately 120 supporters, has initiated an indefinite fast after being detained at the Delhi border during their march to demand Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. The march, named ‘Delhi Chalo Padyatra,’ commenced from Leh a month ago. Wangchuk and his group were apprehended on Monday night for violating prohibitory orders.

Organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), this movement has been advocating for statehood for Ladakh, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, a streamlined recruitment process, and separate Lok Sabha seats for the districts of Leh and Kargil for the past four years.

According to a police spokesperson, the group was detained for breaching Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which prohibits gatherings of five or more individuals in the national capital. Despite attempts to persuade them to disperse, the activists remained resolute.

Wangchuk was reportedly taken to Bawana police station, where concerns were raised about his access to legal counsel. A representative from the group mentioned that the activists had sought official permission for their march, even reaching out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, but claimed this information was misused for their detention.

Ladakh MP Mohmad Haneefa reported that among the detainees, around 30 women were held with male protesters, which has raised concerns about their treatment. He noted that approximately 60-70 individuals from Kargil who attempted to join the march at Singhu border were also stopped by police.

While police stated that women protesters were not detained, Haneefa confirmed that the situation was different on the ground, highlighting ongoing tensions surrounding the demands for Ladakh’s rights.

First Polling Booth Near LOC in Seemari village Demand Basic Necessities Road Access, Free Electricity, Healthcare service and Mobile network

Seemari village

A day ahead of third and final phase of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, over 400 voters from Seemari village, home to India’s “first polling booth” along Line of Control (LoC), demand basic necessities such as better road access, free electricity, immediate healthcare services, increased ration supplies and mobile network.

Residents are urging political parties and local authorities to address these urgent issues to improve their quality of life. They express concern that leaders forget about them after elections, noting that the only support they receive in times of need–whether for employment, food, medicine, or other essentials–comes from the Indian Army deployed along the LoC.

In Seemari village, a total of 443 voters will participate, comprising 226 men and 217 women.
Mohammad Sharif, a resident of the village, said, “This is Seemari village, the last one on the India-Pakistan border, and it has India’s first polling booth. We continue to vote, but we lack roads, hospitals, electricity, and stores. We have been facing many challenges. Voting is our right, and while we participate, the government needs to address our needs. Leaders come to seek our votes but often forget us after elections. Although the government support us, the funds rarely reach us; these funds seem to disappear along the way. Some leaders have visited and spoken with us, but they haven’t made any commitments to meet our demands.”

Another local Ali Asgar said that the village lacks road facilities, and three nearby villages–Phagwan, Trutihaji, and Kadhama–also have no road connectivity.

“When someone falls ill, they are carried on a cot to reach a nearby road to avail vehicle since it can’t access the area. The sick person has to pay Rs 1,500 for a reserved vehicle from the nearest road to get to the Tangdhar hospital. Although there is a clinic here, it has no medicine, and the roads are in poor condition. We spend over Rs 500 on electricity (monthly), but we only receive four hours of supply each day. During elections, we exercise our right to vote, yet we see no benefits from it. Leaders promise us roads and electricity, but nothing materializes. We receive a 5 kg ration on a monthly basis, which isn’t enough to last a month. This is the last remote village with over 400 voters, and we also lack a mobile network and job opportunities,” he said.

Another resident of the Seemari village Naseer Awan added that leaders come here to seek votes and make numerous promises, but they don’t return for next five years after elections are over.

“We have no way of knowing where they are in the meantime. The government does provide some support for our welfare, but we don’t receive everything we need. Living on the border of India and Pakistan, our only assistance comes from the Indian Army. We owe our survival to them; they provide employment and help our people during illnesses or emergencies,” he said.

He asserted further that without the Army here, they would struggle to survive.

“Although there is a hospital, it lacks medicine. We spend Rs 150 per person to travel to Tangdhar (19 km from Seemari) for medical treatment, which is difficult for us as we are very poor and often don’t even have Rs 10. We also face electricity issues and can’t pay our bills. If people in Delhi, where jobs are plentiful, can have free electricity, why can’t we? I urge the government to grant us free electricity.

While the central government has good intentions, local leaders fail to deliver these essential services,” Nasir Awan, the resident of Seemari village said.

On October 1, voters in 40 assembly constituencies across Jammu and Kashmir will participate in the third and final phase of the ongoing elections. Comprehensive arrangements have been made to ensure smooth and hassle-free voting.

More than 3.9 million voters are eligible to participate in the final phase of the Assembly Elections across seven districts of the Union Territory, according to the Election Commission.

In the Kashmir division, 16 assembly constituencies will vote, including Karnah, Kupwara, and Baramulla, while the Jammu division will see elections in 24 constituencies, such as Udhampur and Samba.

A total of 5,060 polling stations will be set up across the districts of Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, and Jammu, with four election officials, including a presiding officer, assigned to each station. Over 20,000 polling staff will be deployed for this phase.

Of the 3,918,220 eligible voters, there are 2,009,033 males, 1,909,130 females, and 57 voters identifying as third gender. Additionally, 194,000 youth aged 18-19, 35,860 persons with disabilities, and 32,953 elderly voters over 85 will also be casting their votes in this phase. (ANI)

Massive Search Operation is going on for the third day in Kathua and Rajouri Extended to Over a Dozen villages

Indian Army

Security forces on Monday extended the ongoing search operations to new areas in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua and Rajouri districts to hunt down terrorists following recent encounters in the region, officials said.

While a policeman and a terrorist were killed and two police officers injured in a fierce gunbattle in remote Kog-Mandli forest village in Billawar tehsil of Kathua district on Saturday evening, a brief exchange of fire took place between terrorists and security forces in Manial Gali in Thanamandi area of Rajouri district on Sunday evening.

A massive search operation is going on for the third day in Kathua with cordon extending to over a dozen other villages near the scene of Saturday’s encounter, the officials said. They said at least three more foreign terrorists of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) are believed to be hiding in the forest belt.

In Rajouri, the officials said the terrorists fled after a brief encounter with security forces at Manial Gali in Thanamandi area Sunday evening.

The operation was called off late Sunday and resumed and extended to new areas early this morning, the officials said. They said there was no fresh contact with the terrorists so far.Meanwhile, slain head constable Bashir Ahmed was laid to rest with full honours at a graveyard near his Jammu residence after a wreath laying ceremony late Sunday evening.

Embracing Respectful Discourse: A Call for Development and Peace in Kashmir

In the complex political landscape of Kashmir, recent remarks by Omar Abdullah and Sajad Lone, who labelled political opponents as “terrorists,” highlight the urgent need for a shift in discourse. Such language not only undermines constructive dialogue but also detracts from the pressing issues that need attention, namely development and peace in the region.

Er Rashid’s response to these labels was one of defiance. He expressed understanding for Abdullah and Lone’s frustrations but firmly stated that if fighting against state oppression and advocating for the rights of innocent people qualifies as terrorism, then he is proud to wear that label. This perspective underscores a crucial point: the use of terms like “terrorist” to silence dissenters can stifle necessary conversations about justice and resolution in Kashmir.

The Importance of Constructive Dialogue

Political leaders should focus on fostering constructive dialogue that addresses the issues affecting the people of Kashmir. Engaging in respectful discussions encourages collaboration and opens the door to solutions rather than deepening divisions. Rather than resorting to harsh rhetoric, leaders should focus on the challenges their constituents face and work towards tangible outcomes.

Prioritising Development Initiatives

A shift in focus towards development is essential. The people of Kashmir face numerous challenges, and prioritising economic growth, education, and infrastructure can significantly improve their quality of life. Leaders like Abdullah and Lone should channel their energies into promoting initiatives that uplift their communities and address pressing needs.

Advocating for Peaceful Solutions

Kashmir’s history is marked by conflict, and the path to resolution lies in peaceful dialogue. Emphasising discussions around peace can help bridge divides and create an environment where diverse perspectives are valued. It is crucial for leaders to encourage open conversations, fostering an atmosphere conducive to understanding and reconciliation.

Engaging with the Youth

The youth of Kashmir are vital to the region’s future. By actively engaging with young people and addressing their concerns, leaders can cultivate a generation invested in peace and development. Organising forums and discussions can empower the youth to voice their ideas and aspirations, ensuring that their perspectives are included in the political discourse.

Building a Legacy of Respect

Ultimately, the role of leaders extends beyond political rivalries; it encompasses leaving a legacy of respect and progress. By promoting unity and cooperation, Abdullah and Lone can inspire others and create a harmonious society. Focusing on common goals that transcend party lines will yield more impactful results, fostering a sense of community and collective purpose.

In conclusion, I urge Omar Abdullah and Sajad Lone to reconsider their approach to political discourse. By embracing respectful dialogue and prioritising development and peace, you can contribute to a brighter future for Kashmir. Let us work together to transform our dialogue into actions that uplift the community and foster a sense of hope and progress for all.

Mallikarjun Kharge Hits Back at Amit Shah: Focus on Caste Census, Not Me Serious Issues Demand Attention

Mallikarjun khergi

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge hit back at Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday following the minister’s criticism of Kharge for linking his health to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Taking a jibe at the Union Minister, Kharge took to social media platform X and said that the Shah should pay attention to serious issues like “Manipur and Caste Census.”

Referring to a survey conducted by the BJP-led NDA government, where he stated that 92 per cent of the urban sewers and septic tank cleaners come from SC, ST and OBC categories, Kharge slammed the BJP and stated that they are against the caste census because it would reveal what categories of people are engaged in what type of work for their livelihood.

He further reaffirmed Congress’s determination to conduct a caste-based census.

“Home Minister Amit Shah should pay attention to serious issues like the Manipur, Census and Caste Census. A survey conducted by your own government says that 92 per cent of the workers cleaning urban sewers and septic tanks come from SC, ST, and OBC categories. BJP is against caste census because then it will be known by which work SC, ST, OBC, EWS and all other classes are earning their livelihood. What is their economic and social status? What kind of targeted benefits of government schemes should they get? The Congress party is determined to get the caste census done. We will get it done,” the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said.

Earlier today, Union Home Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Amit Shah came down heavily on Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and said that the Congress leader had outperformed himself, the party leaders and the party in being “distasteful and disgraceful” during his speech on the last day of campaigning for the third and final phase of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls.

This came following Kharge’s speech, where he said that he would stay alive until Prime Minister Narendra Modi was removed from power after he felt unwell while addressing a rally in the Jasrota area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district on Sunday. (ANI)
