Bakshi Stadium Srinagar: Toyam Hyderabad Secure Spot in Qualifier 2 with Dominant Win Over India Capitals in Eliminator

Toyam Hyderabad delivered a commanding performance with both bat and ball, securing a 7-wicket victory over India Capitals in the Eliminator match held at Bakshi Stadium, Srinagar, on Sunday. This win cemented Toyam Hyderabad’s place in Qualifier 2 of the tournament.

India Capitals, after losing the toss, were sent in to bat first. Their opening pair, Dwayne Smith and Dhruv Jatinbhai Raval, struggled to build momentum. Smith managed just 3 runs from 4 balls, while Raval added a modest 18 from 13 balls. The highlight of India Capitals’ innings came from Collin de Grandhomme, who top-scored with a quickfire 36 off 19 balls. Ben Dunk contributed 9 runs from 14 deliveries, but the team failed to post a competitive total, collapsing to 88 all out in just 14.4 overs.

Toyam Hyderabad’s bowlers dominated the game from the start. Ravi Jangid was particularly impressive, claiming 3 wickets for just 14 runs. Shivakant Shukla also picked up 3 wickets, conceding only 13 runs. Skipper Gurkeerat Singh Mann bowled brilliantly as well, taking 2 wickets for 11 runs in his 3 overs. Nuwan Pradeep (1/20) and Monty Panesar (1/7) chipped in with one wicket each, ensuring India Capitals never found their rhythm.

Chasing a target of 89, Toyam Hyderabad’s openers, Chadwick Walton and George Worker, took to the crease. Walton, however, could only score 5 from 13 balls before losing his wicket. Worker, along with Peter Trego, steadied the innings by adding 24 runs for the second wicket. Worker played a solid knock of 27 from 21 balls, while Trego contributed 19 off just 10 balls. Towards the end, captain Gurkeerat Singh Mann took charge, scoring an unbeaten 22* from 13 balls, guiding Toyam Hyderabad to victory in 11.3 overs.

India Capitals’ bowling attack put up a fight, with Iqbal Abdulla (1/34), Avinash Bhailal Yadav (1/15), and Ashley Nurse (1/15) each taking a wicket, but they were unable to defend the low total.

With this victory, Toyam Hyderabad advanced to the next stage, keeping their championship hopes alive.

Young Islamic calligraphy Artist Firdosa Bashir’s Challenging journey

firdousa bashir

Firdosa Bashir, a young Islamic calligraphy artist from Kehribal, Anantnag in South Kashmir, is gaining attention for her detailed and impressive artwork.

After completing her 12th grade, Firdosa joined an Islamic seminary to study Islamic literature, but her passion for calligraphy led her to focus on learning the art of Arabic script.

Firdosa’s work shows the spiritual teachings of Islam, using traditional calligraphy styles with her own ideas. Her pieces are known for their bright colours and detailed designs, which have earned her appreciation within her community.

Opening up on her journey, Firdosa said, “I was once watching a video on YouTube where a girl was doing calligraphy. She had built a very large platform, and there were a lot of positive comments on many of her videos. Seeing her, I got inspired, and I started doing it myself, though I hadn’t done it before and hadn’t learned from anyone.”

Firdosa’s journey has not been without challenges. The young artist shared that her family didn’t fully support her decision to pursue calligraphy as a career. However, with time, her family began to support her.

“My main interest was very strong. I was happy while doing it, but I knew I didn’t have the capacity to become an IPS officer. So I thought, no, I’ll take my talent forward and, God willing, I will achieve great success in this. So, I started doing calligraphy. At first, it didn’t seem right, but later I started feeling really good, and I kept going,” she said.

“I am very happy, and my family is proud of me, saying that I’m doing something worthwhile now. God willing, I want to become a calligraphy artist in the future, make a name for myself, and make my family proud as well. Initially, I didn’t get much support for this. My father said that no one does this and that it doesn’t work at all in Kashmir. He suggested I leave it and focus on my studies or do something else,” she added.

Firdosa is not only creating beautiful art but also helping to keep the tradition of Islamic calligraphy alive in her community. She holds workshops and takes part in exhibitions, hoping to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of this ancient art form.

Her dedication has made her a role model for many young people in Kashmir. She also believes that there is a lot of hidden talent in the region and that young people just need the right opportunities to show their abilities. (ANI)
