MLA Langate Sheikh Khurshid Holds sit-in protest outside DC office Kupwara over faulty stabilizer

MLA Langate

MLA Langate Sheikh Khurshid, following the path of his brother, Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid, staged a sit-in protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kupwara on Saturday.

Carrying a damaged stabilizer from Lalbug Ganapora, he highlighted the administration’s failure to repair the essential equipment, which had caused drinking water disruptions in the village.

MLA Khurshid criticized the authorities for their inaction, stating that while district administration conduct multiple meetings aimed at improving public services, the ground reality remains different.

He pointed out that the Lalbug Ganapora panchayat had spent ₹23 lakh on a stabilizer transformer and water pump, yet these facilities remained non-functional for months.

“The stabilizer was defunct for a long period. Even after it was started, the mechanical department neglected its maintenance, leading to severe water supply disruption in the panchayat,” he told Rising Kashmir. He added that repeated requests to the concerned department were ignored, leaving him with no option but to stage a protest outside the DC office.

Following the protest, the issue was resolved. An employee from the mechanical department was designated to provide technical support, and the damaged stabilizer was replaced. As a result, the water supply to the affected village has been restored, Khurshid added.

Expressing his commitment to the people, MLA Khurshid stated, “The residents have entrusted me with their votes, and I will always be at the forefront to address their concerns. I will go to any extent to fulfill their legal demands and ensure they get better facilities.”

Pandit Nehru Committed A Mistake By Taking Kashmir issue To The United Nations: DR Karan Singh

DR Karan Singh

Former Sadr-e-Riyasat and veteran Congress leader DR Karan Singh while accusing NC founder Sheikh Abdullah of harbouring “terrible anti-Dogra feelings,” has said that Pandit Nehru committed a mistake by taking the Kashmir issue to the United Nations.

Speaking to PTI news agency, DR Karan Singh said: “I got into politics at the age of 18 because the situation developed in such a way that my father was obliged to leave the state under very painful circumstances. Reason was, of course, Sheikh Abdullah.”

“And why, Sheikh Abdullah, because we had gone to the United Nations and had gone and agreed to a plebiscite. Maybe we need not have gone to the United Nations. In fact, I don’t think we should have gone. One of the few mistakes that Pandit ji made,” he said.

DR Karan Singh said that he thinks Lord Mountbatten was the one who pushed him into that. “So, Sheikh Abdullah had a terrible anti-Dogra feeling all his life. So finally, he went to Pandit ji (Nehru) and said that he cannot win the election till Maharaja Hari Singh is in the state,” he said.

DR Karan Singh said that Sheikh Abdullah was condescending, but he was alright, he added. “When the situation politically turned and I had to sign his dissmisal order and all. Obviously, he was very angry. We met after 14 years then and I was wondering, when we met, how will it be, so I must say to his credit as soon as he came in, he said how is tiger (Karan Singh’s nickname)? So, all the tension disappeared,” he said.

Dr Singh praised Farooq Abdullah for “bringing him back into politics,” while saying that Omar Abdullah is a very ‘balanced person’ who has a bright future ahead.

Pawan Khera Criticizes Government’s Response to China’s New Counties in Hotan Prefecture

Pawan Khera

Congress leader Pawan Khera has strongly criticised the government’s response to China’s establishment of two new counties in Hotan prefecture, incorporating Ladakh’s territory and urged the Centre to take the issue seriously.

Khera said that the “perfunctory objection” raised by the Ministry of External Affairs in Friday’s press conference over the issue is “notwithstanding.”

He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to introspect the issue and said “Casual objection by EAM would not work.” Khera alleged that China’s confidence in making such moves stems from the “clean chit” given by PM Modi.

Speaking with ANI, Khera said, “The perfunctory objection raised by MEA is notwithstanding. China draws its confidence from the clean chit the PM gave on 20th June 2020 after the Chinese incursions in our territory. Now that China has created two counties in Hotan prefecture, it is an area which has been traditionally, historically been ours and we have been very consistent about our claim on the area.”

Khera emphasized that the area in question has historically been part of India and that the government needs to take a stronger stance. He feels that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) objections are inadequate and that more decisive action is required.

“This needs to be taken seriously and casual objections by the EAM would not work. PM must introspect that he can’t go about distributing clean chits to neighbours who are hostile to our interests,” he added.

Furthermore, Khera expressed concerns about China’s plan to build a mega-dam on the Brahmaputra river, which could impact Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. He argued that this project undermines India’s interests in the northeastern region.

“The dam on the Brahmaputra river again undermines and creates havoc for our interests in the northeastern region. This reflects very poorly on our foreign policy,” said the Congress leader.

The MEA has also addressed this issue, urging China to ensure that downstream states are not adversely affected by the dam project and also lodged a protest with China, stating that parts of the new counties fall within Ladakh’s territory.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday, addressing the issue, said that India has lodged a strong protest with China over the establishment of two new ‘counties’ in the region that includes the region under the Union Territory of Ladakh, and asserted that New Delhi has never accepted the “illegal occupation” by Beijing.

“We have seen the announcement pertaining to the establishment of two new counties in Hotan Prefecture of China. Parts of the jurisdiction of these so-called counties fall in India’s Union Territory of Ladakh. We have never accepted the illegal Chinese occupation of Indian territory in this area,” MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a press conference.

He further emphasised that the creation of new counties will not affect India’s stance on sovereignty over the area, nor will it legitimize “China’s illegal and forcible occupation.”

“The creation of new counties will neither have a bearing on India’s long-standing and consistent position regarding our sovereignty over the area nor lend legitimacy to China’s illegal and forcible occupation of the same. We have lodged a solemn protest with the Chinese side through diplomatic channels,” he added.

Last week, Chinese media Xinhua reported that the government of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region announced the establishment of two new counties in the region: He’an County and Hekang County.

The establishment of the counties, both administered by Hotan Prefecture, has been approved by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council. The county seat of He’an is Hongliu Township, while the county seat of Hekang is Xeyidula Township, the report added. (ANI)

sajad lone

Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference President Sajad lone on Saturday requested authorities at the Kashmir University to have examination centres in District Kupwara.

In a post on X, Sajad lone wrote, “It is humble request to authorities at the Kashmir University to have examination centres in District Kupwara. It is the northernmost area of JK straddling the LOC.”

“Not having an examination centre is a barrier to academic excellence. Travelling 100 plus kilometres in biting cold is hardly an optimum start for exams. These are non academic hardships which impact academics and need to be removed.” he added.

“It is psychological fact that recall during exams, concentration, writing fluency are all impacted by the environment. Travelling long distances adds to academic stress and negatively impacts academic performance.”the post reads.
