Ceasefire-Hostage Deal Between Israel and Hamas Takes Effect After Delay

Gaza war

Following a delay over Israel demanding the list of hostages to be released by Hamas, the implementation of the first phase of the ceasefire-hostage deal in Gaza between Hamas and Israel, came into effect today.

The Office of the Prime Minister of Israel confirmed that the deal would take effect at 11:15 am (local time) on Sunday.

Notably, the deal was earlier set to take effect on Sunday, January 19, at 08:30 (local time).

“Pursuant to the framework for the release of the hostages, the ceasefire of the first stage in Gaza will take effect at 11:15,” the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office stated in a post on X.

Earlier, the Israel PM Office confirmed that it received the list of hostages who were expected to be released today by Hamas in accordance with the framework of the deal.

It further informed that Brigadier General Gal Hirsch will act as the coordinator for hostages and the missing. The Israel PM Office also called for the protection of the privacy of the families of the hostages to the media and the public.

“Israel has received the list of the hostages who are due to be released today according to the framework. The security establishment is now checking the details,” the Israeli PMO stated.

“Coordinator for the Hostages and the Missing Brig.-Gen. (Res.) Gal Hirsch has initially notified the hostages’ families via IDF representatives. We request the media and public not to circulate the details of the list, act with caution and safeguard the privacy of the families,” it added in a subsequent post.

Notably, the ceasefire deal suffered a delay hours before the implementation of the deal, when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel would not proceed with the agreed framework until Hamas provided the list of hostages to be released, adding that any violations of the agreement would “not be tolerated”.

“We will be unable to move forward with the framework until we receive the list of the hostages who will be released, as was agreed. Israel will not tolerate violations of the agreement. Hamas is solely responsible,” the Israel PMO quoted Netanyahu as saying.

Earlier this week, the Israeli government approved the ceasefire and hostage release deal with Hamas by a vote of 24-8, according to a report by Times of Israel.

The Israel government’s hostages and missing persons coordination unit on Friday notified the families of the 33 Israeli hostages expected to be set free in the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal.

Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams signed the deal in Doha early Friday after clearing the final hurdles. Both the US and Qatar, who mediated the negotiations, announced on Wednesday that an agreement had been reached to end the 15-month war in Gaza triggered by Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel.

Kashmiri Youth Zahoor Ahmad Sheikh Missing in Russia Ukraine War,Family Appeals to MEA for Son’s Return

Zahoor Sheikh, a resident of Haji Nar in Karnah Kupwara

A family from Tangdhar Karnah, a border town in Kupwara, has urgently appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to help bring their son back from Russia, where, they claim, he was lured into the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

Zahoor Ahmad Sheikh, a 27-year-old from Karnah near the Line of Control, went missing in Russia after being deceived by agents with promises of a high-paying job in December 2023.

His family’s last communication with him occurred on December 31, 2023, when Zahoor mentioned he was to undergo some form of “training” and would be unreachable for three months. Since that call, his whereabouts have been unknown, causing deep distress to his family.

Zahoor’s father, Mohammad Amin Sheikh, told Greater Kashmir that his son, a graduate from Chandigarh, had been working at a company in India, earning Rs 30,000 a month. He was then approached by agents offering a lucrative job in Russia, which promised to pay him an entire year’s salary in just one month. Lured by the offer of a better future, Zahoor agreed to move to Russia.

However, upon arrival, Zahoor reportedly realized he had been deceived. According to his father, Zahoor, along with other young Indian men, was coerced into joining the Russian Army and sent to the frontlines of the Russia-Ukraine war. “My son thought he was heading towards a brighter future, but instead, he was trapped in a conflict he never wanted to be a part of,” said Mohammad Amin.

Since that last communication, Zahoor’s phone has been switched off, and despite over a year of searching, his family has had no success in locating him. Mohammad Amin has reported the case to the MEA and the Indian Embassy in Moscow, and despite multiple trips to Delhi to meet officials, he has received no substantial updates about his son’s fate.

“We have learned that Zahoor is one of 15 Indian nationals who have gone missing in Russia under similar circumstances,” his father shared. Families of the missing individuals allege that their loved ones were coerced into participating in the war. Despite repeated appeals, there has been no significant progress in locating the missing men.

“A year and a month have passed, and still, nobody is able to help us find our son. Every door I’ve knocked on has remained closed. We are living in constant fear, not knowing if Zahoor is alive or not,” said Mohammad Amin, expressing his family’s only wish – to know the truth about his son’s wellbeing.

In a recent update, the Ministry of External Affairs addressed the situation of Indians serving in the Russian Army amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal revealed that the whereabouts of 16 individuals are currently unknown, with the Russian government listing them as “missing.”

Jaiswal stated, “We are working for the early release and repatriation of those who remain. Of the 126 cases, 96 individuals have returned to India after being discharged from the Russian Armed Forces. Eighteen Indian nationals are still serving, and 16 of them are currently missing. Sadly, twelve Indian nationals who had been serving in the Russian Army have died.”

FIR Registered Against Rahul Gandhi for Remarks on BJP, RSS, and Indian State

Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, has landed in trouble over his recent remarks, where he stated that “the BJP and RSS have captured every single institution, and we are now fighting the BJP, the RSS, and the Indian State itself”.

An FIR has been registered against him at the Pan Bazar Police Station in Guwahati.

Rahul Gandhi made the statement on January 15, 2025, during the inauguration of the Congress Party’s new headquarter at Kotla Road in Delhi. The FIR was registered under section 152 and 197(1)d of the BNS for “acts endangering sovereignty unity and integrity of India,” a cognizable and non-bailable office.

The complainant, Monjit Chetia, alleged that Gandhi’s statement crossed the limits of permissible free speech and posed a serious threat to public order and national security.

Chetia claimed that Gandhi’s words were an attempt to delegitimize the authority of the State, creating a dangerous narrative that could provoke unrest and separatist sentiments.

“By declaring that his fight is against the “Indian State itself,” the accused has consciously incited subversive activities and rebellion among the populace. This is an attempt to delegitimize the authority of the State and to portray it as a hostile force, thereby creating a dangerous narrative that could provoke unrest and separatist sentiments,” Chetia said in his complaints according to the FIR.

Chetia also suggested that Gandhi’s remarks were motivated by frustration over repeated electoral failures. As the Leader of Opposition, Gandhi has a responsibility to maintain public confidence in democratic institutions, but instead, he chose to exploit his platform to spread falsehoods and provoke rebellion, endangering the unity and sovereignty of India.

“Having been unable to gain public trust through democratic means, the accused now seeks to incite disaffection against the central government and the Indian State. This behavior is particularly alarming, given his position as the Leader of the Opposition, a role that comes with the responsibility to maintain public confidence in democratic institutions. Instead, the accused has chosen to exploit his platform to spread falsehoods and provoke rebellion, endangering the unity and sovereignty of India,” the complainant said.

Chetia complained that Rahul Gandhi’s remarks represent a direct challenge to the integrity and stability of the Indian State, warranting immediate legal action under Section 152 of the BNS. (ANI)

Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani to Attend Donald Trump’s Inauguration, While PM Modi’s Absence Raises Questions

Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani

In a surprising turn of events, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, and his wife Nita Ambani, Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, are slated to attend the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on January 20, 2025. The couple’s participation in this high-profile event has stirred considerable attention, especially given the notable absence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ambani’s Invitation to Trump’s Inauguration

As prominent figures in the global business landscape, Mukesh and Nita Ambani’s presence at Donald Trump’s inauguration is not entirely unexpected. The Ambanis have a history of engaging in international diplomacy and fostering business relations with key global leaders. Their attendance underscores the strategic importance of Indo-U.S. business ties, particularly in light of recent collaborations and investments between the two nations.

Sources close to the Ambanis have confirmed their itinerary, which includes participating in various inaugural events. These events are expected to feature a blend of political dignitaries and business moguls, including a prestigious candlelight dinner hosted by President-elect Trump. This dinner provides an exclusive opportunity for attendees to engage in discussions on bilateral trade and investment opportunities.

PM Modi’s Absence: A Matter of Speculation

While the Ambanis’ attendance has been welcomed in many circles, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s absence from the event has sparked widespread speculation. Traditionally, such significant international events see the participation of top political leaders to signify diplomatic solidarity. However, the reasons for Modi’s absence remain unclear.

Analysts suggest several possible explanations for Modi’s non-attendance. One theory points to scheduling conflicts, given the myriad responsibilities and commitments that come with leading a nation. Another perspective considers the potential political ramifications of aligning too closely with the controversial Trump administration. Modi’s government may be seeking to maintain a balanced diplomatic stance amidst evolving global dynamics.

Implications for Indo-U.S. Relations

The contrasting presence of India’s top business figures and the absence of its political leader at Trump’s inauguration have led to varied interpretations regarding the current state of Indo-U.S. relations. On one hand, the Ambanis’ participation could be seen as a reinforcement of strong economic ties and a gesture of goodwill towards fostering further bilateral cooperation. On the other hand, Modi’s absence might be perceived as a subtle diplomatic message, reflecting caution in engaging too closely with the incoming U.S. administration.

Conclusion

As the inauguration date approaches, the spotlight remains on Mukesh and Nita Ambani’s role in representing India on the global stage. Their attendance is a testament to the growing influence of Indian business leaders in international affairs. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi’s absence will likely continue to fuel discussions about the strategic directions of India’s foreign policy under his leadership.

The world will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold and what they signify for the future of Indo-U.S. relations. One thing is certain: the dynamics between these two powerful nations are as complex and multifaceted as ever.
