Indian Railways Conducts Trial Run of Vande Bharat Train from Katra to Srinagar

Vande Bharat train

Indian Railways on Saturday conducted the trial run of the first Vande Bharat train from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) railway station to Srinagar railway station.

The train will run through Anji Khad Bridge which is India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge and Chenab Bridge which is the highest railway bridge in the world.

This train has been designed keeping in mind the cold climate conditions of the Kashmir valley.
On January 23, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that several countries had shown interest in importing semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains from India.

“Many countries have shown interest in Vande Bharat,” Vaishnaw told ANI when asked if there were queries for the import of the train manufactured in India.

And there is one interesting thing that some participants, who are of Indian origin, say that when they were in India, their children say that they want to sit in Vande Bharat,” he added.

Indian Railways launched India’s first indigenous semi-high-speed train Vande Bharat Express and it is regarded as a ‘Make in India’ success story.

The first Vande Bharat Express train was flagged off on February 15, 2019, on the New Delhi-Kanpur-Allahabad-Varanasi route, running at a speed of 160 kilometres per hour.

During the financial year 2022-23, approximately 31.84 lakh were booked to travel on Vande Bharat trains. The overall occupancy of Vande Bharat trains during this period has been 96.62 per cent.

These trains are equipped with top-tier amenities and advanced safety features, such as Kavach technology, accessible toilets for Divyangjan, and integrated Braille signage. In India, there are four new types of trains — Vande Bharat Chair Car, Vande Bharat Sleeper, Namo Bharat Train, and Amrit Bharat Train.”

With the constellation of these four trains, the passengers in our country will get good quality services,” Vaishnaw said.

Testing of Vande Bharat Sleeper is almost complete, and the data is being analysed, before the actual production at Integral Coach Factory, the Minister said. (ANI)

MMU Delegation Urges Rejection of Waqf Bill Amendments, Citing Threat to Muslim Community and Autonomy, Next meeting of JPC on Waqf Bill to be held on January 27

MMU Delegation

MMU Delegation led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq from the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) submitted a memorandum to the Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), Jagdambika Pal, in New Delhi on Friday, expressing deep concerns over proposed amendments to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The MMU strongly opposed the amendments, claiming they are detrimental to the Muslim community’s interests and violate fundamental rights.

The memorandum highlighted that Waqf properties are sacred assets dedicated by Muslims for social welfare and public benefit. The MMU argued that these religious and social institutions should be free from state interference, but the proposed amendments threaten their autonomy and functioning.

A key concern raised was the reduction in Muslim representation on the Central Waqf Council and State Waqf Boards, with a proposed increase in Non-Muslim representation. Previously, all but one member were Muslim and elected, but under the amendments, Non-Muslims would hold significant sway.

The MMU also criticized the provision allowing the government to remove Waqf properties from the list of protected assets, which could lead to the seizure or sale of valuable properties, ultimately limiting resources for religious and charitable work within the Muslim community. Furthermore, they claimed the amendments infringe upon Muslim Personal Law, safeguarded under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution.

The MMU reiterated that the Muslim-majority region of Jammu and Kashmir is particularly alarmed by these changes, viewing them as an attempt to undermine religious freedoms and institutional autonomy. The delegation urged the government to reconsider and reject the amendments and instead engage in dialogue with the Muslim community to address their concerns and collaborate on any potential changes to make the Waqf Act more beneficial without imposing discriminatory measures.

Social Activists Criticize NCM Member Rouble Nagi’s Remarks on Kashmiri Pandits’ Return

Rouble Nagi

Prominent social activists, including Sunil Kaul and Sanjay Sapru, have strongly criticised Rouble Nagi, a member of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), for her recent remarks on the return of displaced Kashmiri Pandits (KPs) to the Valley.

During a press conference in Srinagar, Nagi claimed that KPs could return as there was “no negative attitude” toward them from local residents. In response, activists accused Nagi of either attempting to appease radical elements or being unaware of the circumstances behind the mass exodus of KPs in 1989-90.

“For over three decades, KPs have lived in exile due to lack of security, destroyed homes, and the absence of concrete rehabilitation plans. Her statement ignores this painful history. If there’s no hostility, why were Makhan Lal Bindroo and Rahul Bhatt brutally killed? These incidents reflect the grim realities KPs still face,” said Sunil Kaul.

Sanjay Sapru questioned how displaced KPs would return without proper planning, noting that many ancestral homes have been destroyed or sold under duress. “What is the roadmap for their safe return? Without addressing security and infrastructure, such statements are hollow and misleading,” he added.

The activists also criticized the lack of acknowledgment from Kashmiri leaders regarding the ethnic cleansing of KPs. “To this day, few political leaders in Kashmir admit that Pandits were forcibly driven out as part of a deliberate strategy orchestrated by Pakistan,” Koul emphasized.

Later, Kaul and Sapru asked Nagi to educate herself on the issue before making what they described as “irresponsible and dismissive” statements and first of declare KPs as minority community in India.
