Kishtwar Cloudburst: Farooq Abdullah Urges PM Modi to Take Global Warming ‘Very Seriously’

Farooq Abdullah Speaking With media on India Pakistan War

After a massive cloudburst on Thursday triggered a flash flood in the Chashoti area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take the issue of global warming very seriously as these incidents have become common in hilly areas.

Speaking to the media, Abdullah termed the incident “very unfortunate”.

“I would like to tell the Prime Minister to take the issue of global warming very seriously. This has become very common in hilly areas. One or the other method will have to be looked for to overcome this. So, I appeal to him to think in this hour of grief about how this can be remedied,” he said.

The former J-K Chief Minister emphasised that rescue operations are currently underway, hoping that the death toll is not high.

“This is a very unfortunate incident. Cloudbursts have become a routine in our mountain areas. You saw this in Uttarakhand; you saw the damage there. It happened in Ramban last year. This time, it happened on the route of the Machail Mata Yatra. Lakhs of people undertake this Yatra…We hope that IAF helicopters are able to go there and retrieve the injured. Villages and the temple area have suffered damage…Rescue operation is underway…We hope that the death toll is not very high…,” Farooq Abdullah said.

Meanwhile, Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives.

“Extremely tragic news coming from Padder, Kishtwar, where a massive cloudburst has claimed several lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls. May God give strength and support to those affected in this difficult time,” she said in a social media post.

Rescue operations are reportedly underway as authorities continue efforts to locate missing persons and provide relief to those affected. As per the Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar, Pankaj Sharma, the rescue operations are underway.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said a massive cloudburst struck the Chashoti area in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, prompting the administration to launch rescue operations and make arrangements for medical aid immediately.

In a post on X, Jitendra Singh wrote, “Just now spoke to DC Kishtwar Sh Pankaj Kumar Sharma after receiving an urgent message from LoP #JammuAndKashmir and local MLA Sh Sunil Kumar Sharma.”

Damage evaluation and necessary rescue and medical management arrangements are being made. My office is receiving regular updates, and all possible assistance will be provided,” the post read.

JK LG Manoj Sinha directed the Army and NDRF officials to strengthen rescue efforts.

J&K Faces Stray Dog Crisis with 23 Dogs per 1,000 People, Lags in Control Measures

Dogs Attack in Budgam

J&K has been in a crisis due to an escalating stray dog population, the density of which, as per government data, is 23 dogs per 1000 people. The alarming figure underlines a growing public health and safety concern.

However, the government’s inaction on creating infrastructure and policies for managing the dog population scientifically has continued.Even with dogs becoming the centre of discussion across the country after the recent Supreme Court decision, J&K has almost slept on the issue, Google Trends shows.

An X handle, @India.in.pixels, has graphically portrayed the interest of states and UTs in “stray dogs”. J&K has a score of 24 based on data from August 11-12, 2025.

This has been translated as “not-really-interested”, quite in line with other states and UTs.Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Karnataka score better.Delhi has a score of 100, the highest in the country.

The X handle has also shown the state and UT-wise people-to-dog ratio.J&K features at number two, with 22.9 dogs per 1000 people, as per the 2019 data of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairies.Odisha, with 39.7 dogs per 1000 people, tops the list.

The apathy in J&K towards controlling the dog population and putting in place other measures that could ensure practical and long-term solutions has been chronic. This is despite the frequent reports of dog bites and aggressive encounters with residents across the length and breadth of J&K.

The stray dog population here poses a persistent threat, with no effective measures in place to control it.The Animal Birth Control measures, as recommended by national guidelines, have been few and far between and Srinagar-centric.

For the past 11 months, even Srinagar has been unable to restart its dog sterilisation programme.Dog shelters are nonexistent – the sick, aggressive, and injured animals are left on streets, without containment or care.

J&K has also failed to put in place a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) that could enforce humane population control strategies and prevent cruelty against dogs and other animals.

The vacuum and the inaction have been fuelling frustration among people.Reports of incidents of attacks are as common as sightings of dogs. The August 11 Supreme Court judgment that ordered the relocation of all stray dogs to shelters within eight weeks in Delhi has sparked both support and criticism.

However, in J&K, it has not moved many heads. The failure to start robust sterilisation programmes allows the dog population to grow unchecked, and attacks are becoming common. At the same time, the lack of shelters exacerbates the plight of injured or diseased dogs, and the threatening dogs remain on the streets.

Animal Birth Control Rules 2023 mandate states and UTs in India to put in place Animal Birth Control measures and return of sterilised and vaccinated dogs back into their territories.

Srinagar Police, FSSAI Bust Rotten Meat Supply Racket, Seize Cold Storage in Parimpora

FSSAI Bust Rotten Meat

In a joint operation, the Srinagar Police and the Food Safety Department conducted raids at multiple locations across the city, targeting vendors suspected of selling unhygienic and expired meat products.

During the operation, substantial quantities of rotten meat were seized and destroyed on the spot under relevant sections of Food Safety and Standards Act.

In one such action, Srinagar Police in collaboration with officials of the Food Safety and Standards Association of India ( FSSAI ) raided cold storage unit in Parimpora where rotten meat was stored, which was seized, subsequently leading to the seizure of the cold storage under relevant section of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Officials confirmed that the action is part of an intensified drive to safeguard public health and ensure strict adherence to food safety standards.

Similarly, acting on credible input received at Police Station Zakoora, authorities identified Ab Hameed Kuchay, a resident of Soura and operator of Sunshine Foods located at SICOP Zakoora, as a key suspect.
