Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited in Action Against Non-Payment of Electricity Bills Consumers

KPDCL

Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has intensified its drive against non-payment of electricity bills and remotely disconnected thousands of smart-metered consumers.

Similarly, in flat-rated areas, those consumers who haven’t paid their pending dues for months together are being physically disconnected, till they clear their bills with KPDCL.

In a press statement issued here today, a KPDCL spokesperson stated that fervent appeals have been made urging consumers to pay their bills on time. He further stated that KPDCL is a Service Provider that needs timely clearance of bills by all categories of consumers for electricity supplied to remain economically viable.

While 1,134 smart-metered consumers were disconnected in Electric Division Chanapora on Thursday, electricity supply of 440 consumers in ESD Baramulla I, 240 in ESD Baramulla II and 228 in ESD Qazigund were also snapped.

Large number of consumers are being remotely disconnected across other Subdivisions of Habba Kadal, Watalkadal,  Hawal, Anantnag, Kupwara, Handwara, Sopore, Budgam, Chadoora, Zainakote, Zakura, Nishat and  Dalgate for not paying bills for over three months,” he added.

Seeking cooperation from all consumers in clearing pending dues, the spokesman said that KPDCL will further accelerate disconnection drives against defaulter consumers who are reluctant to pay their electricity bills on time.

Urging the consumers with huge opening balance to avail the benefits of Government’s Power Amnesty Scheme, the spokesman advised them to approach the concerned Electric Subdivision for paying principal amount in full or instalments, enabling them to claim waiver on late payment surcharge. “To facilitate the consumers, KPDCL is organising Amnesty Camps on daily basis across all Electric Divisions and so far, over 1 lakh domestic consumers have availed the benefits of the scheme,” he added.

Director Issues Fire Safety Advisory Amid Rising Incidents and Heat Wave in Jammu

Given the increasing temperatures and rise in fire incidents, Director Fire and Emergency Services (FES), Alok Kumar, issued strict directions and an advisory for the Union Territory, especially the Jammu province.

In response to a warning from the Jammu & Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA), the FES department issued an advisory with preventive measures to minimize fire-related losses.

The advisory includes the following recommendations:

  • Remove flammable materials such as piles of dust, leaves, sticks, and cardboard from your living area, as they can ignite under strong sunlight.
  • Keep cables tidy and avoid overloading sockets; give electrical panels and gadgets rest and cooling breaks.
  • Turn off the electricity in houses when not at home.
  • Avoid placing electric cables under furniture, carpets, or near flammable objects.
  • Store matches and lighters out of children’s sight and reach to prevent accidents.
  • Avoid cooking during peak hours and ventilate the cooking area by opening doors and windows.
  • Douse cigarette butts with water and place them in a fire-proof container; never toss them on the ground.
  • Extinguish fire pits and campfires after use.
  • Follow local ordinances for trash burning and use caution with flammable liquids.
  • Do not throw lit cigarettes out of moving cars.
  • Avoid leaving trash or stubble burning. Farmers should not burn trash or stubble unless necessary and must ensure it is completely extinguished to prevent re-ignition.

These measures are intended to enhance fire safety and reduce the risk of fire incidents.

Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Aadhaar Deactivation Ahead of Elections; Vows Support for Welfare Recipients

Mamata Banerjee

Amidst the heated atmosphere leading up to the Lok Sabha elections, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched scathing allegations against the BJP-led central government. She claims that Aadhaar cards for citizens in her state are being deactivated deliberately, just before the crucial polls. Banerjee has pledged staunch support for the recipients of state-run welfare schemes, ensuring that they receive their entitled benefits regardless of their Aadhaar card status.

Expressing grave concern over the reported deactivation of Aadhaar cards across various districts in Bengal, Banerjee cautioned the public about a potential concerted effort by the BJP-led Centre to disrupt access to crucial benefits such as those offered by the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme and free ration, particularly in the run-up to the elections.

Emphasizing her government’s unwavering dedication to social welfare, Banerjee guaranteed protection for every beneficiary against any adverse impacts resulting from the alleged Aadhaar card deactivation.

In a show of solidarity, Banerjee also reiterated her support for the ongoing farmers’ protest, applauding their resilience while condemning any instances of violence they encounter. The ‘Dilli Chalo’ march by farmers from states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh aims to exert pressure on the Central government to address key demands, notably the legal assurance of minimum support prices for their agricultural produce.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government is under fire from the BJP over recent incidents of rape and violence against women in Sandeshkhali. Allegations implicating Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders in these incidents have led to protests, with villagers accusing the police of apathy.

In response to mounting pressure, the West Bengal police have announced the inclusion of gang rape charges under the Indian Penal Code against TMC leaders Uttam Sardar and Shibaprasad Hazra, in an effort to address the growing concerns of the affected community.
