The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar proudly hosted the Global Alumni Meet 2024 on the 11th and 12th of October, bringing together over 100 alumni from various parts of the world, including Europe, Asia, and different regions of India. The event witnessed significant participation from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, highlighting the institution’s far-reaching impact.

The meet was chaired by Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman, with Prof. Sheikh Nazir Ahmad, Dean of Alumni Affairs, moderating the discussions. Dr. Dinesh Kumar Rajendran, Coordinator of the Alumni Cell, led the event’s coordination, ensuring its resounding success.

The two-day event saw active involvement from Deans and Heads of Departments, alongside alumni working across a wide range of industries and sectors. Key discussions revolved around strengthening research collaborations, expanding internship and placement opportunities, creating endorsement funds, and setting ambitious goals to propel NIT Srinagar’s academic excellence.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Atikur Rehman emphasised the vital role of alumni in enhancing the institute’s global standing. He praised the achievements of the alumni, particularly highlighting their efforts in building over 3000 connections in just six months, a testament to their dedication and success.

Prof. Sheikh Nazir Ahmad facilitated open discussions, encouraging an exchange of ideas on how alumni could contribute to NIT Srinagar’s future success. Topics included partnerships in cutting-edge research, leveraging alumni networks for internships, and improving placement rates for current students.

Alumni from Mumbai, representing finance, media, and technology sectors, explored potential mentorship and placement opportunities for current students. The Delhi alumni contingent, comprising entrepreneurs and policymakers, focused on research collaborations with national institutions and industries. Meanwhile, alumni from Agra shared their expertise on industry partnerships, and those from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh addressed region-specific challenges, particularly in sustainable development.

Dr. Dinesh Kumar Rajendran, coordinator of the event, outlined the Alumni Cell’s vision for the future, focusing on fostering a strong alumni network through mentorship programmes, networking events, and providing more resources to advance student success.

The Global Alumni Meet 2024 successfully reaffirmed NIT Srinagar’s commitment to maintaining a supportive and vibrant alumni community. The event concluded with a collective resolve to continue working towards the institute’s goals, enhancing its legacy as a centre of academic innovation and excellence, leaving behind cherished memories for all participants.

Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri Celebrates World Mental Health Day

Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies and Research (CMSR), Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri celebrated world mental health day. Prof. Akbar Masood, Vice Chancellor of the University in his message said that the aim of celebrating World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness among students and staff about mental health issues and taking necessary measures to address mental health. The Vice Chancellor lauded CMSR for organizing the event on such an important theme.

On the occasion, Dr. Parvaiz Alam, HoD Department of Psychiatry, GMC Rajouri delivered and extension lecture on the theme ‘ Mental Health at Workplace’. Dr. Alam said that mental health is as essential as physical health, yet it’s often overlooked. He mentioned that mental health refers to emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. He explained some common mental health issues like Anxiety Disorders, Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD),Eating Disorders and Substance Abuse.

He said that mental illness is not a weakness and can affect everyone, regardless of age, background, or socioeconomic status.He mentioned that seeking help is a sign of strength. While discussing the strategies for good Mental Health , he said that social connections and strong relationships help in the management of mental health issues.

Earlier, Dr. Danish Iqbal Raina, Coordinator, CMSR in his address said that prioritizing mental health is crucial for overall well-being. By breaking stigmas and promoting awareness, we can create a supportive environment for those facing mental health issues.

Those who were present on the occasion included Mr. Asrar Ghaus , Coordinator CHT, Dr. Parvez Abdullah, Head , Department of Management Studies and Dr. Malik Mubashir, Convener, University Placement Committee. More than a hundred students participated in the event.

On the occasion, College of Nursing, BGSBU organised a webinar by inviting eminent health care professionals to speak on the various issues related to mental health.

Doctors Suspended

The Jammu and Kashmir School Education Department suspended Mushtaq Ahmad Rather, Principal of Boys Higher Secondary School (BHSS) Sopore.

The suspension comes under Rule 31(1) of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Services (Classification, Control, and Appeal) Rules, 1956.

As per Government Order, the suspended principal will remain attached to the Chief Education Office, Baramulla, during the suspension period.

The Director of School Education, Kashmir, has been appointed as the inquiry officer and tasked with conducting an investigation into the matter. The report, along with recommendations, is expected to be submitted within 15 days.

In the interim, the Drawing and Disbursing Powers of BHSS Sopore have been transferred to the Principal of Girls Higher Secondary School, Sopore, until further orders—(KNO)

The evolution of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Polytechnics in Kashmir reflects the region’s commitment to technical education. Today, ITIs and Polytechnics in both government and private sectors offer a variety of courses aimed at building a technically skilled workforce. Kashmir has seen remarkable growth in the number of training institutes over the past few decades. From just seven ITIs and two Polytechnics, the region now boasts 60 ITIs and 32 Polytechnics. 6. Intake Capacity and Course Offerings in ITI’s and Polytechnics
The intake capacity in Kashmir’s ITIs and Polytechnics has also grown significantly. ITIs now offer training in 72 different trades, ranging from six-month to two-year courses, with a total intake of 15,763 students. Meanwhile, Polytechnics provide 16 different AICTE-recognised diploma programmes with an intake of 5,655 students. These institutions cover a broad spectrum of technical fields, including both core and specialised engineering and non-engineering disciplines, ensuring that students have access to a wide range of career opportunities.

7. Human Resource Development Schemes and Initiatives
The Skill Development Department in Kashmir has implemented several schemes aimed at human resource capacity building. These initiatives are designed to equip young people with the technical skills required to meet the demands of local industries. One of the department’s key initiatives is the Skill Development Mission, which aims to train thousands of youth in employable technical skills. Other schemes include Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives, as well as centrally funded programmes that focus on both short- and long-term training.

The Skill Development Mission in Kashmir has set ambitious targets for training the region’s youth. The goal is to provide technical training to 78,593 young people over a five-year period. By 2013, the department had already trained 24,626 individuals, with a further 44,813 expected to be trained by the end of the financial year. Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University celebrated Gandhi Jayanti to commemorate the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The event was marked by rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, led by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Akbar Masood along with students,faculty members and officers of the University.

In his message, Prof. Akbar emphasized the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of cleanliness and simplicity in contemporary society, linking it to the goals of the Swachh Bharat mission . The Vice Chancellor also highlighted Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence in the context of the International Day of Non-Violence.

On the occasion, the Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies and Research organised a lecture on the theme ‘ Mahatma Gandhi in Contemporary Times’. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Danish Iqbal Raina. In his lecture Dr. Raina elaborated on Gandhi’s enduring principles of non-violence, truthfulness and service which continue to inspire global efforts for peaceful coexistence. He focussed on Gandhian Philosophy towards environmental sustainability.

Dr. Raina said that the Gandhian Philosophy would continue to inspire future generations towards love, peace, honesty and truth.Students from various departments of the University participated in the event.

Government School Teacher from Kangroosa Rafiabad selected for Fulbright Teaching Excellence Programme 2024-25

In a significant development, a government school teacher from Kangroosa Rafiabad has been selected for Fulbright Teaching Excellence Program 2024-25 in the United States.

Tajamul Naseem Lone, a government school teacher presently posted at Dangiwacha higher secondary school is among 187 ‘outstanding’ teachers who have been selected for the program.

As per the official communication received from the United States Department of State Bureau of educational and cultural affairs, Washington DC, around 3200 applications were received from international educators from over 65 countries across the world.

“And you are among the 187 outstanding teacher leaders to be selected as finalists,” reads the official communication signed by Branch Chief Teacher Exchange branch, Jennifer Gibson.

“The mission of the Fulbright Program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries,” it reads

The Fulbright Program awards more than 5,000 competitive, merit-based grants annually to teachers, university students, scholars, artists, scientists, and professionals from across the United States and in 160 countries who exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

“The U.S. Congress provides funding to the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program,” it reads.

As per the official communication, the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program brings international secondary-level educators to the United States for a six-week professional learning opportunity at a host university. “Participants attend academic seminars at a host university that focus on topics such as new teaching methodologies, student-centered learning, instructional technology, and content-based instruction,” it reads

Under the program, the participants complete a minimum of 40 hours in a field experience with a U.S. partner educator of their same or a similar discipline in a local secondary school.

The 2024 — 2025 Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program will also include specialized programming in gender in education, media literacy, and environmental education.

Meanwhile, as per the official communication issued by Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, the presidentially appointed 12-member Board is responsible for supervising the Fulbright Program worldwide and approving the selection of all Fulbright recipients. “Your grant is a reflection of your leadership and contributions to society and is made possible through funds appropriated annually by the U.S. Congress and, in many cases, by contributions from partner countries and private parties,” reads an official communication addressed to Tajamul Naseem Lone.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Tajamul credited his achievement to the support of the staff at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Dangiwacha and the mentorship of Rameez Sudan, a Fulbright alumnus, who guided him.“This year, only seven teachers from across India were selected for the prestigious programme,” he said.

Lone completed his primary and secondary education in his local area before pursuing a Bachelor of Science from the University of Kashmir.In 2008, he relocated to Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, to pursue a Master’s degree in Zoology at Barkatullah University.

According to Lone, his experiences include teaching in the Department of School Education in Kashmir since 2015. He has also worked as an ALOHA administrator and course instructor for five years, during which he conducted evaluations to measure student performance and progress.

“I have guided areas requiring improvement and worked collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and parents to help students achieve their learning objectives,” he said.
