Govt restores November-December academic session up to 9th standard

students

In a move that addresses a long-standing demand of residents in the Kashmir Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir government has announced the restoration of the November-December academic session for students up to 9th standard. This adjustment comes as a relief for parents and educators who have advocated for this schedule, seeing it as better suited to the region’s climatic and logistical needs.

Education Minister Sakina Itoo confirmed the decision, stating, “For now, we will restore the academic session back to November-December up to 9th standard. For students of 10th to 12th, the academic session will be restored from next year.”

This decision is seen as part of a phased approach to transition back to the traditional academic cycle after the adoption of a Uniform Academic Calendar in 2022, which shifted the start of the academic year to March. Many in the Valley felt that the previous calendar disrupted students’ routines and affected exam preparedness due to winter’s impact on school attendance and access to resources.

The move has been widely welcomed by local communities and education stakeholders, who believe the change will help align school schedules with seasonal patterns and improve overall academic focus during the winter months. (KNS)

Prof. M. A. Shah Takes Oath as President of Teachers’ Society at NIT Srinagar

M. A. Shah

In an inspiring and exciting event, Prof. M. A. Shah, a distinguished Faculty and Former Head, Department of Physics, took the oath as the newly elected President of the Teachers’ Society at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar. The inaugural of swearing-in sacred ceremony was held with great enthusiasm and zealousness in the New Guest House, NIT campus. A large gathering of faculty, staff and students joined the event, showing a unique symbol of unity. The ceremony was formally opened by Prof. Nazir Ahmad, Dean Alumni and International Affairs and Professor of Mechanical Engineering Department (two times Presidents of the society), whose words set a powerful tone for the occasion and later on administered the oath to Prof Shah. Reflecting on the Society’s origins, he paid homage to former faculty members who founded the organization at the then, Regional Engineering College, Srinagar. Established with a constitution crafted by Prof. O.N. Kaul and formally recognized by the Board of Governors, the Teachers’ Society has a storied history rooted in the welfare of both faculty and students. Citing many examples of humility and harmony, including of his supervisors, he warned if there is any indiscipline in democracy. The neat and clean society has started its journey from December, 1986, though reports reveal that the Society was in existence prior to 1986, headed by some eminent and visionary teachers of the institution. The constitution remained always a guiding and path finder for any matter including in turbulence and was treated as a sacred document by our predecessors. Described as “a document as relevant today as it was at its inception”, Prof Sheikh, celebrated the founders’ visionary efforts to create a society that upholds teachers’ rights, fosters academic collaboration, and promotes student welfare. President, Non-Teaching Association along with team also attended the sacred festival of teachers.

The 2024 election was conducted meticulously on October 14, following the society’s bylaws and utilizing a preferential voting system. Prof. M.A. Shah emerged with a resounding victory, garnering 398 points over his opponent’s 257 points, reflecting widespread support and optimism among the faculty. In his acceptance speech, Prof. Shah reaffirmed his commitment to the society’s constitution, calling it “the Bible of our Mission.” He pledged to uphold the principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability that have long been the organization’s bedrock, asserting that “all actions will remain within the sacred framework of our constitution.”

Prof. Shah’s election marks a fresh start, especially for young faculty, who have high hopes for his leadership. With a clear mandate, Prof. Shah is expected to address crucial issues, including long-overdue promotions for junior faculty members and longstanding institutional challenges that require urgent attention. Supported by council /representatives from various departments, he has already demonstrated his readiness to foster positive change while maintaining adherence to the highest standards. Within the ambit of the constitution, a team of 12 members, (one from each department) representing all departments shall be elected as executive members of the society, as per the process mentioned in the constitution. Described by his colleagues as law-abiding, liberal, and upright, Prof. Shah has gained admiration for his loyalty, discipline, and commitment to his principles and peers. He has long enjoyed the trust and respect of faculty and top leadership of the institute. His vision for society includes not only redressal of current grievances but also a long-term focus on nurturing an academic environment that is collaborative, inclusive, and forward-thinking.

The faculty looks forward with renewed confidence to his leadership, which they believe will bridge generational gaps, resolve long-pending issues, and pave the way for a brighter future for teachers and students. Shah’s earnest desire to make this society as vibrant “Scientific Society” of eminent Engineers, Applied Scientists and Social Scientists shall be accomplished only by the cooperation. His appeal for blessings to take this journey forward and handover the sacred society to young generation in its best form culminated the memorable program. The dream to make it, Royal Teachers Society is not far from reality, shah reiterated. (KNS).
