Nasrallah was martyred five months ago in an Israeli airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut.Nasrallah was assassinated on 27 September and was temporarily buried in secrecy based on a religious decree. Hezbollah officials believed the security situation was too unstable to allow public mourning by leaders and scholars.

In a televised speech, Naim Qassem stated, “We have decided to hold a collective funeral on 23 February.”

He also revealed that the funeral would include the burial of the former head of Hezbollah’s Executive Council, Hashem Safi al-Din, who was killed in a similar Israeli attack in early October.

For the first time, Qassem disclosed that Safi al-Din had been chosen to succeed Nasrallah as Secretary-General. However, he was assassinated before the official announcement could be made.

He further stated that Hassan Nasrallah will be buried in southern Beirut, while Safi al-Din will be laid to rest in his hometown in southern Lebanon.

During his speech on Sunday, Qassem remarked that some forces are attempting to exaggerate Hezbollah’s defeat. He insisted that the people of the south shape their present and future with honour and high positions.

Commenting on the ongoing war with Israel, Hezbollah’s Secretary-General clarified, “We have never claimed a complete victory. This is a war where both gains and losses are part of the battle.”

Those moves appear aimed at reassuring the West and trying to get crippling sanctions lifted on Syria. Rebuilding the country after over a decade of war will likely cost hundreds of billions of dollars, not to mention covering the needs of Syria’s people, millions of whom remain impoverished.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan visited Damascus in January and said Riyadh has been “actively engaging in dialogue” to lift sanctions on Syria. Saudi Arabia, unlike Al-Sharaa’s key allies in Turkey and Qatar, restored ties with Assad in 2023 alongside most of the Arab world. According to a CNN report American Airlines Flight 5342 with 60 passengers and four crew members on board, had departed from Wichita, Kansas. Three soldiers were on board the helicopter that came out of Fort Belvoir, Virginia, according to a US defense official.

US President Donald Trump issued a statement from the White House, expressing condolences for the victims of the crash. “I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise,” he said.

Sources reported that the crash occurred just off the runways of Ronald Reagan National Airport, with debris scattered across the Potomac River. In response to the collision, all air traffic, including takeoffs and landings, at Reagan National was halted, according to airport officials.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident, stating that the PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet and the Army Blackhawk helicopter collided around 9 pm local time.

Emergency personnel are actively engaged in recovery operations.

American Airlines confirmed that an American Eagle flight from Wichita, Kansas, to Reagan National was involved in the incident. The airline stated that it is aware of the reports and is offering support to those affected. Fireboats and emergency teams, including DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, have been deployed to the scene, working to manage the recovery and search efforts. Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s Executive Order on Birthright Citizenship

A federal judge in Seattle has halted the Trump’s Executive Ordersigned that aimed to restrict automatic birthright citizenship. US District Judge John Coughenour called the order “blatantly unconstitutional” and issued a temporary restraining order at the request of four Democratic-led states.

The controversial order, signed on Trump’s first day in office, directed federal agencies to deny citizenship to children born in the US if neither parent is a citizen or legal permanent resident. This move has already faced five lawsuits from civil rights groups and Democratic attorneys general representing 22 states, who argue it violates the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause.

“This order denies citizenship to babies born today,” said Lane Polozola, Washington’s Assistant Attorney General, during a court hearing. Democratic attorneys general from Washington, Arizona, Illinois, and Oregon supported the request to block the administration’s actions.

The Justice Department defended the order, calling it a key element of Trump’s efforts to reform the US immigration system and address border issues. However, the challengers highlighted that the Constitution guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the country, as established by the 14th Amendment, which was adopted in 1868 to overturn the infamous Dred Scott decision.

The order, if enforced, could deny citizenship to over 150,000 newborns annually, barring them from Social Security numbers, government benefits, and lawful employment. The legal dispute in Seattle has progressed quickly, with Judge Coughenour—a Reagan appointee—expected to decide soon whether the order can take effect.

International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Applies for Arrest Warrants Against Taliban Leaders Over Crimes Against Humanity

The International Criminal Court prosecutor said on Thursday he had applied for arrest warrants for two Taliban leaders in Afghanistan including supreme spiritual leader Haibatullah Akhundzada, accusing them of crimes against humanity for widespread discrimination against women and girls.

A statement issued by the office of chief Prosecutor Karim Khan said evidence collected as part of investigations provided reasonable grounds to believe that Akhundzada and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, who has served as chief justice since 2021, “bear criminal responsibility for the crime against humanity of persecution on gender grounds.”

They are “criminally responsible for persecuting Afghan girls and women, as well as persons whom the Taliban perceived as not conforming with their ideological expectations of gender identity or expression, and persons whom the Taliban perceived as allies of girls and women,” the statement said.

The persecution has taken place from at least Aug 15, 2021 until the present day, across the territory of Afghanistan and is ongoing, the prosecutor said.

There was no immediate comment by Taliban leaders on the prosecutor’s statement.

It will now be up to a three-judge panel at the ICC to rule on the prosecution request, which has no set deadline. Such procedures take an average of three months.

In August last year, the Taliban codified a long set of rules governing morality in line with Islamic sharia law. The rules are enforced by the morality ministry, which says it has detained thousands of people for violations.

Khan said his office was demonstrating its commitment to pursuing accountability for gender-based crimes and that the Taliban’s interpretation of sharia could not be a justification for human rights abuses or crimes.

The prosecutor said Afghan women and girls are facing an unprecedented, unconscionable and ongoing “persecution” by the Taliban. “Our action signals that the status quo for women and girls in Afghanistan is not acceptable,” he added.

The Afghanistan probe is one of the longest by ICC prosecutors and has been beset by legal and practical delays. The initial preliminary examination started in 2007 and it was only in 2022 that a full-scale investigation moved forward.

Since Taliban returned to power in 2021 it has clamped down on women’s rights, including limits to schooling, work and general independence in daily life.
