AIIMS Awantipora To Be Functional By Nov 2025, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo Reviews Progress for Early Completion

Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo, today held a joint meeting of the authorities of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Awantipora, Health & Medical Education, PWD, Jal Shakti and CPWD regarding early completion of this  vital health facility in the region.

Those who attended the meeting included Executive Director, AIIMS, Awantipora, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Secretary, PWD, Secretary, H&ME, Deputy Commissioner, Pulwama, Chief Engineer, CPWD, DG, Budget besides others.

The Chief Secretary assessed the status of physical infrastructure raised at the site, so far, along with proposed dates of its completion. He enquired about the current status of labourers available for execution of work there and impressed upon the agency to enhance their number immediately after the winter season is over.

He also reviewed the water supply scheme and the approach road leading to the institute. He directed the Jal Shakti Department to complete the first phase of the WSS including 3 bore wells and other allied works by May this year for providing adequate water supply to the hospital to become functional.

Dulloo further assessed the additional land and other requirements for future expansion of this project. He enquired from the Executive Director about any of the pending issues deserving administrative support and simultaneously assured him of all possible assistance.

Executive Director (ED), AIIMS Awantipora, Dr Sachidananda Mohanty, provided overall scenario of the readiness of this facility along with the possible dates of completion of each block. He revealed that the institute has achieved overall physical progress of about 61% on all the 57 blocks to be raised here. He gave out that the institute is possibly going to be made functional by the end of November this year.

The meeting was further apprised of the detailed labour force deployed in completion of each block. It was said that due to cold weather conditions the labourers had migrated and only internal works are currently going on with the presence of around 850 skilled/semi-skilled/unskilled labourers which earlier used to be around 2400-2500 under fair weather conditions.

It was further disclosed that the work is going on all the 6 hospital blocks, 4 academic blocks, 16 residential blocks, 12 hostel blocks along with Ayush block besides night shelter and guest house, which are part of this medical college and hospital of national repute.

“This initiative will greatly benefit the residents of Bandipora, reduce the pressure on tertiary care hospitals, and ensure that patients receive timely and effective medical care,” said Dr. Wani.

Adding to the milestone, DH Bandipora is also set to launch Contrast CT scans, a first for the district. This advanced diagnostic service will enable more precise and detailed imaging, catering to a wide range of medical needs. A qualified radiologist will be available for on-the-spot reporting and diagnosis, ensuring prompt and accurate medical assessments.

Dr. Wani also revealed that the hospital conducted 2,062 CT scans during daytime alone in the current financial year. With the launch of the 24×7 facility, this number is expected to increase significantly as the service will now be available during the night as well.

Minister for Health Expresses Concern Over Unidentified Disease in Rajouri, Multiple Deaths Reported

Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Itoo, has expressed concern over the spread of an unidentified disease in Rajouri, which has already resulted in multiple deaths. Speaking in Srinagar, she confirmed that health officials are actively investigating the cause while ensuring necessary medical interventions.  
According to the minister, the disease was under control until recently, but fresh cases emerged following an event on January 9, where several children were affected. “Six to seven children fell ill after attending a function and were shifted from Rajouri Government Medical College to Jammu. Unfortunately, some of them succumbed,” she stated.  
Itoo emphasized that the health department has mobilized all resources to tackle the situation. “The entire medical team, including directors, heads of departments, and concerned doctors, are on the ground.I have personally spoken to the District Development Commissioner and SSP Rajouri, who are also monitoring the developments,” she added.  
Despite extensive testing, the cause of the disease remains unknown. “The Secretary of Health has issued instructions, and further investigations are underway. Although initial reports from collected samples have returned negative, additional tests are being conducted, and the findings will be shared with the press,” Itoo assured.  
Acknowledging the challenges posed by the winter season, the minister also highlighted the need for proper heating arrangements in hospitals. “Ensuring patient care during the cold months is a priority, and we regularly review the situation with hospital directors,” she said.  (KNS)

In a heartwarming development, the Medical Superintendent of District Hospital (DH) Bandipora, Dr. Masrat Iqbal Wani, on Monday, issued a certificate of completion of treatment for a clubfoot patient.

The patient, Khatija, was born at DH Bandipora four months ago and diagnosed with clubfoot during screening by the District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) at DH Bandipora.

Following her diagnosis, Khatija was referred to Dr. Nadeem Ali, Consultant Orthopedician at DH Bandipora, who initiated her treatment. After a series of follow-up sessions and dedicated care, her treatment has been successfully completed, marking a significant milestone for the patient and her family.

The DEIC at DH Bandipora has been instrumental in facilitating such treatments. Under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) scheme of the National Health Mission (NHM) Jammu and Kashmir, financial assistance of ₹84,000 has been provided to 12 patients in the current financial year.

Dr. Masrat Iqbal Wani also appealed to the general public to visit the hospital if they know of or have anyone around with conditions such as cleft lip and palate, congenital heart defects (CHD), clubfoot, or any other disabilities or disorders in children under the “4Ds” category. He encouraged families to bring such children to the DEIC section of the hospital, where they can access free benefits, treatment, and referral support.

He commended the efforts of the DEIC team and Dr. Nadeem Ali for their commitment to ensuring quality healthcare for children with special needs. Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, today held a detailed inspection of Jawaharlal Lal Nehru Memorial (JLNM) Hospital Rainawari and reviewed the overall status of medical facilities available for the locals there.

MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq and other senior officers of health department accompanied the Minister.

During the inspection, Sakeena Itoo held detailed round of the hospital and reviewed overall functioning of the health facility. She inspected OPD, IPD, Operation theatre, blood bank and other units of the hospital.

Interacting with the hospital administration and other on duty staff, the Minister emphasized on cleanliness and hygiene inside the wards for maintaining overall patient care environment in the hospital. “Round the clock heating arrangements should be maintained in the hospital in view of harsh cold this winter”, Sakeena directed the hospital administration.

The Minister further underlined on importance of timely maintenance of medical equipments in hospital in order to improve quality of healthcare services for the public.

During the inspection, Sakeena Itoo also visited medical supplies section of the hospital and evaluated the inventory. She called upon the officers to maintain adequate stock of medicines and other equipments in the hospital during the winter months.

The Minister assured the hospital administration of continued support from the Government and advised them to work with zeal and zest so that the government hospitals meet the needs of population.

The Minister also interacted with the patients and their attendants and took on spot feedback from them about the healthcare services being provided at the hospital.

The Minister visited various sections of the hospital including emergency ward, outpatient department (OPD), inpatient wards, operation theatres, NICU and PICU wards and reviewed their functioning.

Interacting with the doctors and paramedics on the occasion, Sakeena Itoo impressed upon them for timely medical intervention of referral patients owing to criticality of expecting mothers. She also stressed for optimal utilisation of available resources at this premiere maternity health facility to ensure that patients receive best possible care.

“It is crucial for healthcare facilities to operate with highest standards of medical care and hygiene, especially in government hospitals that serve the majority of population”, Sakeena maintained. She added ‘our government is committed to ensure that medical services are efficient, well-managed and patient-centric across all peripheral and tertiary care hospitals as well as other institutions.

During the inspection, the Minister also took note of several critical areas where improvements are needed. She assured the hospital administration that immediate corrective measures would be taken up to address these issues.
