Supreme Court Fixes March 10 for Final Hearing in Sonam Wangchuk NSA Detention Case

Centre Blames Sonam Wangchuk

The Supreme Court on Thursday scheduled the final hearing in the plea filed by Gitanjali J Angmos, wife of Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, challenging her husband’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA), for March 10.

A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and PB Varale also clarified that the Court will not grant any more time to parties for any further arguments on the matter. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

“If we have any doubt (on the case), only that we will ask. That day we are closing it. We will not allow anything (beyond clearing doubts). Come what may, close it”, the Court stated.

Earlier, on February 11, the Supreme Court had questioned whether Wangchuk’s speeches and social media posts could legitimately be treated as provocative material leading to the Leh violence on September 24, 2025.

While hearing submissions by the Central government and the Leh administration defending Wangchuk’s preventive detention under the National Security Act (NSA), a Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and PB Varale examined the speeches relied upon by the detaining authorities and raised questions on the interpretation being placed on them, particularly where Wangchuk appears to be expressing concern over youth losing faith in peaceful “Gandhian” methods of protest and the fear of a violent outbreak in the demand for Statehood.

When Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, appearing for the Centre, submitted that Wangchuk was the chief provocateur behind the violent protests and had instigated the youth by warning that a Nepal-like situation could arise in India, the Court questioned this reading and remarked that Wangchuk appeared to be expressing concern and surprise over the situation.

“Where does he say that? He is saying they (the youth) have taken it. He himself is surprised,” the Court asked.

Nataraj responded that such an inference could be drawn from the speech itself. He then referred to another portion in which Wangchuk allegedly stated that the deployment of armed forces in Ladakh was unfortunate.

“He says youth say peaceful methods have not proved effective,” Nataraj submitted. “This is a hybrid expression,” he added.

The Court responded that in these speeches, Wangchuk appears to be expressing worry about violence and questioned the interpretation being placed by the Centre that he’s instigating it.

“He (Wangchuk) is saying it’s worrying. He’s expressing that this is not something which would be welcome. If someone says violent — is the expression, ‘I’m worried’. Some people are abandoning the peaceful way and are willing to take violent methods; this is worrying. We are following the Gandhian way. If someone is taking a departure from that way (non-violent Gandhian method) – departure from that is worrying,” the Court said. (ANI)

Jammu & Kashmir Dominate Karnataka on Day 3 of Ranji Trophy 2025-26 Final

J&K Sports

Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) seized firm control of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 final against eight-time champions Karnataka on Day 3 at the KSCA Hubli Cricket Ground, leaving the hosts staring at a massive first-innings deficit.

J&K, appearing in their maiden Ranji final, were bowled out for a commanding 584 in 173.1 overs early on Day 3, adding 57 runs to their overnight 527/6. Shubham Pundir top-scored with a gritty 121 (off 247 balls, 12 fours, 2 sixes), while contributions came from Paras Dogra (70), Kanhaiya Wadhawan (70), Sahil Lotra (72 off 138 balls, including 8 fours), and others. Karnataka pacer Prasidh Krishna claimed a five-wicket haul (5/98) but toiled on a largely placid pitch. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

In reply, Karnataka’s batting lineup crumbled against J&K’s disciplined seam attack, led by pacer Auqib Nabi, who delivered a devastating spell of 3/32 in 14 overs. Nabi dismantled the top order, dismissing KL Rahul, Karun Nair, and season’s leading run-scorer R Smaran around the lunch interval, reducing Karnataka to 57/4 as the ball swung and seamed effectively.

Opener Mayank Agarwal mounted a lone resistance with an unbeaten 130 (off 207 balls, 17 fours), anchoring the innings and preventing a complete collapse. At stumps on Day 3, Karnataka were 220/5 in 69 overs, still trailing by a hefty 364 runs. Kruthik Krishna remained unbeaten on 27* alongside Agarwal.

The day highlighted J&K’s superior bowling intensity and accuracy on a surface that offered little earlier, contrasting Karnataka’s struggles. With only the tailenders left, Karnataka face an uphill battle to avoid the follow-on and force a contest on Day 4.

This historic final sees underdogs J&K pushing for a maiden title against a star-studded Karnataka side featuring multiple Test players. Play resumes tomorrow, with J&K firmly in the driver’s seat.

manooj sinha

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday addressed the 21st Convocation of University of Kashmir. The convocation ceremony was graced by Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan.

The Lieutenant Governor extended his best wishes to all graduating students for a prosperous future. He them to set a clear path for their future – ‘One purpose. One priority- Country first’. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

“Always remember when you build the country, the country builds you back. Nations don’t rise only from resources. They rise from educated people and when the nation rises, so do you,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor said that the convocation at the University of Kashmir is a vivid proof of generational metamorphosis, fulfilled aspirations, and youth’s unwavering faith embodied in modern education.

“The knowledge earned in University of Kashmir isn’t merely skills but it is holistic personality growth. Education builds self-confidence, equips for meaningful lives and it molds responsible citizens, linking personal success to collective good.

Education is the most powerful instrument of change ever placed in human hands. It redirects the course of a life. It reshapes the destiny of families. And when the youth embrace it fully, it rewrites the future of a nation from the ground up,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor emphasised that the ideas in the classroom must impact the world. He called upon the Universities to aspire to move beyond their traditional role as custodians of knowledge- evolving into vibrant centers of innovation, human development, and social transformation.

“My Mantra is that Industry and Intellect should grow together. Our Universities should collaborate with Industry, innovators, research and development organisations to build Viksit Bharat and to ensure that the higher education campuses and companies co-create the Future,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor stated that the technology evolves at breakneck speed. He said that the digital revolution, artificial intelligence, global realignments, and demands for new skills are redefining higher education.

“Possibilities for collaboration and innovation stretch endlessly. Careers being prepared for today may morph tomorrow. Industries are reshaping. The real question isn’t whether change will come, but whether we can sync with it. I believe those youth will surge ahead who possess critical thinking, core knowledge, and a resolve to lifelong learning.

Artificial Intelligence now permeates every field-healthcare, agriculture, finance, urban planning, governance. So, the question arises: Will technology serve human welfare or just profit? I see universities’ campuses crafting that answer, where knowledge fuses with life’s values,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor outlined three key priorities for the faculty members- “First, adaptability as every curriculum’s core skill. Second, seamless integration of AI and emerging tech with human intelligence. Third, global and interdisciplinary collaboration. Modern challenges interconnect so universities must shatter subject silos and mandate cross-disciplinary teamwork.”

The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that our goal is to become a fully developed nation by 2047.

“Viksit Bharat isn’t a dream, but a resolve fuelled by hard work. It demands diligence, innovation, moral strength, and ceaseless invention-and this mission falls to our young generation,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor also congratulated all the medal winners and lauded the girl students for their dominant performance.

He said that out of 239 gold medals, a staggering 186 are won by our daughters and of the 164 PhDs awarded, 108 bear our daughters’ names.

“No statement could more powerfully define the New India. This tells our people: Give daughters opportunity, encouragement, and equal ground, and they don’t just join—they lead, excel, and set new standards. To today’s medalists and graduates: You are not just forging your futures—you are rewriting possibilities for every young woman next at Kashmir University,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

CT University Terminates Vice Chancellor After Alleged Harassment of Kashmiri Students Over Ramadhan Arrangements

CT University Terminates Vice Chancellor

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Wednesday said that CT University has terminated its Vice Chancellor following serious allegations of misconduct and administrative failure linked to the alleged harassment of Kashmiri Muslim students over their request for Sehri and Iftar arrangements during the holy month of Ramadhan.

National Convenor of JKSA, Nasir Khuehami, said that the Punjab Chief Secretary, KAP Sinha, informed the Association that the matter was taken up at the highest level and has now been resolved. According to the Association, the Chief Secretary conveyed that Dr. Nitin Tandon has been removed from his position as Vice Chancellor with immediate effect. The controversy began after Muslim Kashmiri students alleged that they were threatened with eviction from the hostel and cancellation of their admissions after requesting basic meal arrangements for Sehri and Iftar in the university mess during Ramadhan. The students further alleged that the then Vice Chancellor used abusive language and warned them of academic repercussions.

The issue escalated into a peaceful agitation on campus, with students demanding a fair probe, assurance of safety, and institutional accountability.

Following JKSA’s intervention with the Punjab Government, senior district officials, including Senior Superintendent of Police Ankur Gupta and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Upinderjit Kaur Brar, visited the university campus to assess the situation and ensure the safety and security of the students.

Khuehami also stated that Shahi Imam of Punjab, Maulana Mohammad Usman Rahmani Ludhianvi, visited the campus, met students and university authorities, and facilitated dialogue to de-escalate tensions and restore normalcy.

Subsequently, the Chancellor of the University, Charanjit Singh Channi, informed that Vice Chancellor Dr. Nitin Tandon has been terminated over his alleged conduct and handling of the situation. He added that the university has initiated an internal inquiry into the incident, while local authorities continue to monitor developments to ensure transparency and accountability.

The Punjab Government has also constituted a high-level committee, headed by the SDM, to conduct a time-bound probe into the matter, including possible administrative lapses and misconduct.

The Association said the agitation was formally called off after the administration ordered a comprehensive inquiry and the university terminated its Vice Chancellor. JKSA expressed gratitude to the Punjab Government, the university management, the district administration, police authorities, and community leaders for ensuring the matter was resolved peacefully through dialogue and institutional intervention.

Reiterating its stance, the Association said that Punjab has historically been a welcoming and compassionate home for Kashmiri students and traders, and stressed that preserving this legacy of brotherhood and inclusivity remains essential.

Statehood Before Solidarity: J&K Still Waits as Omar Abdullah Backs Bengal’s Rename Move

Statehood Before Solidarity

Omar Abdullah found his voice for Kolkata on Wednesday. “If Kerala can be renamed Keralam,” he told reporters in Srinagar, “the Centre should accept West Bengal’s Bangla demand too.” Gracious words. National headlines followed. Meanwhile, J&K remains the only elected government in India without statehood. One and a half years after elections. Six years after August 5, 2019. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The Chief Minister governs without full powers. His cabinet lacks control over the bureaucracy. Two power centers elected government and Lieutenant Governor create confusion that ordinary citizens pay for daily. Omar himself admits: “Nobody in J&K will be satisfied till statehood is restored.” The contrast stings. Kerala renamed in one Cabinet meeting. West Bengal’s rename earns Chief Ministerial solidarity from Srinagar. J&K’s statehood, a constitutional promise made on the floor of Parliament by the Home Minister himself  earns “very soon” and “appropriate time.” Union Minister Arjun Meghwal offered fresh hope last week: “You will hear some decision very soon.” J&K has heard that before. Farooq Abdullah, the elder statesman, said on Sunday what his son must say louder: statehood is not a privilege — it is a constitutional obligation. Every day’s delay weakens democratic accountability, stalls governance, and signals to J&K’s 1.35 crore people that their constitutional rights negotiate differently. Omar Abdullah is right to support Mamata. Symbolic federalism matters. But J&K’s Chief Minister owes his own people the same relentless energy he offered Bengal — on every platform, every day, until Delhi delivers. Bengal wants a new name. Kashmir wants its old status back.
