Rahul Gandhi Urges for Restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s Statehood, Criticises BJP and LG in Rally

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday advocated for the restoration of the region’s statehood, asserting that the withdrawal of its autonomous status has not only snatched the state of its identity but also eroded the rights and resources of its people.

While addressing an election rally in Ramban ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Election, the Congress leader said, “For the first time in the history of India, statehood has been snatched away. Union Territory was first made a state… A state has been abolished and the rights of the people have been snatched away. First of all, the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir has to be returned because not only your state has been snatched away, your rights, your wealth, everything is being snatched away from you.”

“We wanted that you should first get statehood and then elections should be held. But the BJP does not want this, they say that first elections will be held and then the issue of statehood will be discussed. We are saying that whatever happens, we will get statehood for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Whether the BJP wants it or not, we will exert so much pressure that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will have to be given statehood,” he added.

Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the current administrative setup in Jammu and Kashmir, drawing a parallel between the region’s past monarchical rule and its present governance.

“In 1947, we removed the kings, formed a democratic government and gave a Constitution to the country. But… Today, there is a ‘king’ named LG sitting in Jammu and Kashmir, who is snatching your money and giving it to outsiders. Therefore, our first step will be to return ‘statehood’ to Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

The Congress MP highlighted his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ and underscored the contrasting visions of his party and the BJP.

“This fight is between two ideologies. On one side- hatred, violence, and fear. On the other hand- love and respect. We walked from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, during which we gave the slogan – ‘We have to open a shop of love in the market of hatred.’ BJP’s job is to spread hatred, our job is to spread love. They break, we unite,” he said.

“Before the Lok Sabha elections, Narendra Modi used to come with his chest puffed out, now his shoulders are bent. This time, before entering the Parliament, he placed the Constitution on his forehead and then went inside,” the Congress leader added.

Rahul Gandhi also assured to fill all the government vacancies after coming to power.

“The alliance government of Congress party is going to come to power here, this is going to happen. Our first task will be to fill all the government vacancies and we will extend the age to 40 years, we will regularize the daily wage workers, make them permanent and we will increase their income. Our goal will be to run the government of Jammu and Kashmir by taking everyone together, everyone should be respected, we should take everyone together,” he said.

“This is such a beautiful place, I will have to come here after the elections. You have made a 45-minute program for me here, you have cheated me. At least a 2-3 day program should be made here, I don’t get to see such a place, such lovely people, at least bring me here for 2-3 days and show me around,” the Congress leader added.

Jammu and Kashmir has 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 9 for Scheduled Tribes (STs).
These upcoming elections will be the first in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370.

Polling in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1. The counting of votes will take place on October 8. (ANI)

Sarjan Barkati Challenging Omar Abdullah Ganderbal for Elections After Nomination Rejection in Zanipora Shopian

After the Election Commission of India (ECI) rejected Sarjan Ahmad Wagay’s nomination from Zainapora in south Kashmir due to an incomplete application, the jailed cleric and separatist leader, known as Sarjan Barkati, is set to refile his nomination. Reports indicate that Barkati will now contest the Ganderbal Assembly seat in central Kashmir, challenging former Chief Minister and JKNC vice-president Omar Abdullah.

Barkati’s nephew, Rehbar Ahmad, confirmed to The Indian Express that Barkati will contest from Ganderbal, a constituency historically dominated by the Abdullah family. Omar Abdullah, who won the seat in 2008, is again running for the same position.

Barkati’s initial nomination papers were rejected on August 28 because he failed to provide a complete signed oath certificate in time. While his family initially planned to challenge the decision in court, they have now opted for Barkati to contest from Ganderbal.

The decision to enter the elections has surprised many in Kashmir. Barkati’s daughter, Sugra Barkati, had previously filed his nomination papers and campaigned for her father’s release, hoping that a successful election might lead to his bail.

Previously affiliated with Ummat-e-Islami, Barkati was arrested by the State Investigation Agency (SIA) in August 2023 over alleged fundraising activities linked to money laundering and radicalism. He had gained prominence through his leadership in protest rallies following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in 2016. Barkati was arrested under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in 2016, released two years later, and re-arrested in August 2023.

On Wednesday, BJP leader Ram Madhav accused the oldest political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, JKNC and PDP, of employing former militants as candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Addressing the media in Srinagar’s Khanmo area, where he was supporting a BJP leader during the nomination process, Madhav described this election as “historic,” marking a significant shift after a prolonged hiatus. He expressed hope that the long-standing parties responsible for the region’s hardships over the past three decades would face defeat and disgrace. Madhav emphasized that voters are expected to back new parties and leaders who prioritize peace and development.

“Our party is poised to form a strong government with substantial support,” Madhav asserted. He also highlighted the enthusiastic participation of J&K’s youth in the electoral process, which he believes will help liberate the region from entrenched dynastic politicians.

Regarding the unusual candidates entering the fray, Madhav stated that while all are welcome to run, militants and ex-militants are not permitted.

Ram Madhav, a key strategist for the Modi-led BJP, played a crucial role in securing the party’s victory in J&K in 2014. Recent reports suggest that Madhav has been entrusted once again with ensuring BJP’s success in the upcoming elections.

Dr Darakhshan Andrabi Addressed Youth Rally at Rajpora

BJP National Executive Member & senior party leader Dr Syed Darakhshan Andrabi today addressed a youth rally in Rajpora constituency of Pulwama held as a part of the election campaigning for the BJP youth leader & party candidate Arshid Bhat.

The rally was participated by youth in large numbers. Many prominent youth voices of the area joined BJP. After the joining of the new youth brigade into the party, Arshid Bhat said that the public support and response was truly encouraging and he was sure of making mark during the elections.

Welcoming the new entrants into party, Dr Darakhshan said that Arshid Bhat has won over the people’s trust and faith by his social service activities during the past few years. He has a strong support base among the youth. She appealed to the people to vote for this dynamic young candidate.

“BJP will emerge as the strongest political force in J&K during these elections. The people are fed up with the rhetoric of dynasts and want a change”, said Dr Andrabi. Reacting to the hollow manifestoes and lectures of the dynastic politicians, Dr Andrabi said that they were a desperate lot as they list the grip at the ground level after August 2019.

“These dynasts in tone with separatists, nourished on the bloodshed and disturbing situations for decades and ruled to loot without any accountability but now the situations are altogether different. Congress District President (Ganderbal), Sahil Farooq threatenes to stand as an independent candidate against Omar Abdullah

 In an unexpected turn of events, the Congress district president of J&K’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday threatened to fight as an Independent candidate against National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah if denied candidature by the party.

Omar Abdullah is fighting the Assembly elections from the Ganderbal Assembly constituency while Gujjar leader, Mian Meher Ali is fighting the election as the NC candidate from the Kangan (ST) constituency of the district.Both Kangan and Ganderbal are two Assembly constituencies in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district

As per the pre-poll alliance, the NC will fight from 52 seats and Congress from 31 seats in the J&K Assembly elections.

On Tuesday, Congress district president (Ganderbal), Sahil Farooq threatened to stand as an independent candidate against Omar Abdullah if the Congress doesn’t give him the party mandate.

“If we can fight a friendly contest on five seats, why not in Ganderbal as well? I am willing to contest the upcoming Assembly elections under the party’s banner if a friendly contest between the Congress and NC is permitted in the Ganderbal constituency similar to the arrangements in other constituencies,” Sahil Farooq said.

He, however, added that if his party does not allow such a contest, he will consider running as an independent candidate, though he will remain a loyal Congress worker.

He has expressed dismay over what he calls ‘continuous neglect’ of local leaders in Ganderbal.

“I am loyal to the party, but the people of Ganderbal are facing hardships,” he said.

Farooq alleged that Ganderbal has always been kept out of the decision-making process with outsiders often being imposed on the constituency.

“Why is Ganderbal always forced to accept outsiders? Our local leaders have never been given a fair chance. If the Congress leadership does not make a decision by this evening, I will proceed to contest independently, but my commitment to the Congress party will remain unchanged. I am doing this for my downtrodden people.”

He wanted the Congress leadership to give him a chance to represent Ganderbal in a friendly contest.

If he finally chooses to stand as an independent candidate against Omar Abdullah, that decision could affect the dynamics of the electoral alliance between the NC and the Congress.

Administration Should Help the Farmers for crop losses due to wind and hailstorm: Altaf Bukhari

Expressing profound grief and sorrow over the losses suffered by fruit growers and farmers due to the recent hailstorm in south Kashmir’s Shopian and Kulgam districts, Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari urged the administration to initiate a thorough assessment of the crop losses in order to provide adequate compensation to those affected.

He promised that “if the Apni Party secures a public mandate in the upcoming assembly polls, it will introduce a special compensation package for the orchardists and farmers who suffered significant losses due to the gusty winds and hailstorm.”

Pertinently, the recent heavy rains, hailstorms, and gusty winds have caused significant damage to fruit and other agricultural crops in the Shopian and Kulgam districts. Reports say that the worst hit villages in Shopian are Wachi, Kapran, Rawalpora, Kachdora, Kachdora Check, Vehil, Zaipora, and Reshnagri, while as in Kulgam most affected villages Pombay, Arreh, Kadder, Qazigund, and adjoining areas.

In his statement issued here, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari said, “I am deeply saddened to learn that an intense hailstorm has caused extensive damage to apple crops in various villages across Shopian and Kulgam districts. I urge the administration to deploy official teams to the affected areas to assess the losses so that the victims can be adequately compensated.”

He promised that “If the Apni Party receives a public mandate in the upcoming assembly polls, it will announce a special compensation package for those affected by the adverse weather in these two districts.”

“In these challenging times, the Apni Party stands in solidarity with the victims, and I assure them that we will leave no stone unturned to secure fair compensation for them,” he added.

In Srinagar Islamia College organizes seminar on Protection of Children’s Rights

College Women Cell of Islamia College hosted a significant seminar focused on the “Protection of Rights of Children” in the Campus on a theme, discussions on safeguarding the fundamental rights of children in today’s world.

The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Irfan Shafi, Convenor, College Women’s Cell from PG department of English, ICSC who in her introductory speech said that, “Every child deserves not just survival but the opportunity to thrive. Professor Irfana also highlighted about the series of events and activities conducted by the College Women’s Cell within and outside the campus.

Principal of the College, Professor Tehmina Yousuf who emphasized the critical need for increased awareness and action regarding children’s rights said that, “The protection of children’s rights is not just a legal obligation but a moral imperative for all of us.

Professor Tehmina stated in her opening address that this initiative, supported by Islamia College, seeks to engage students and local stakeholders in advocacy and educational activities.

Keynote speakers of the seminar Professor Zahida Mehraj, Associate Professor from the PG Department of Zoology, ICSC delivered a powerful keynote address on the global and national landscape of child rights.

Professor Zahida Mehraj discussed and highlighted the persistent challenges, including child labor, trafficking, and inadequate access to education.

The event featured a series of expert presentations and interactive sessions, highlighting various aspects of child rights protection. Distinguished guests Dr. Khair-ul-Nisa, Ms. Nuzhat Un Nisa Koul, Ms. Misba Rasheed, Dr. Shaid Ronga, Ms. Benish Kazimi from the Child Welfare Committee, Govt. of J&K, District Srinagar were present in the seminar who shared their viewpoint on the topic.

Dr. Khairul Nissa, presented her insights on the psychological and physical impacts of rights violations on children.

She discussed how exposure to abuse, neglect, and exploitation can lead to long-lasting trauma and developmental issues. Dr. Khair-Ul-Nissa urged for a holistic approach to child protection that integrates psychological support with legal and educational interventions.

Professor Ab. Majid, Head, PG Department of English, ICSC highlighted the role of educational institutions and community organizations in advocating for legal protections and ensuring that children’s rights are enforced.

The seminar also included dynamic panel discussions and interactive Q&A sessions which was moderated by Ms. Nuzhat Ul Nisa Koul, Ms. Misbah Rasheed, Dr. Shaid A Ronga, Ms. Benish Kazimi providing attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the experts.

In closing ceremony Professor Rehana Bhat from PG Department of English reiterated the college’s commitment to this cause. She concluded with a formal vote of thanks.

Mehar Ali files Nomination Papers from Kangan Assembly Segment

Mehar Ali, the son of National Conference senior leader and Member Parliament Mian Altaf, Monday filed his nomination papers from Kangan Assembly while as NC vice president Omar Abdullah stated he was confident of Mehar’s victory given the fact his the family’s fourth generation taking part in polls.

“In Mehar Ali, it will be the Mian family’s fourth generation taking part in elections from Kangan. I am sure he will follow his ancestors and father in serving the people. He will carry forward the legacy,” said Omar while accompanying Mehar to the office of Returning Officer where he filed his nomination papers.

Omar Abdullah said that he was confident of Mehar’s victory. Speaking to reporters, about Ram Madhav’s silent visits to J&K, he said Madhav has been close to PDP only and seems he is still in touch with the party. “He was the man behind stitching the PDP-BJP alliance in 2015,” he said.

After Sept 10 Modi and Amit Shah is Addressing Rallies in Chenab Valley

Prime Minister NarendraModi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will kick off the BJP’s election campaign in Jammu and Kashmir with mega rallies in Chenab Valley.
“Both Prime Minister NarendraModi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit J&K anytime after September 10 and address mega rallies in Chenab Valley,” former MLC VikramRandhawa told Rising Kashmir.
The BJP high command has entrusted Randhawa with the responsibility of ensuring the successful conduct of the rallies in Jammu.
The rallies will be held in Chenab Valley, where all Assembly segments will go to polls in the first phase. “The venue of the rallies will be finalized within a day or two,” Randhawa added.
Following the rallies, top BJP campaigners will visit various Assembly constituencies in J&K, particularly in Jammu region, to canvass for the party.
A team of 77 top political strategists has been deputed by the BJP high command to devise the party’s election strategy in J&K. They will camp in the state till the culmination of the Assembly elections.
Cong, NC, PDP exploited people of J&K: Union Minister Giriraj Singh
Begusarai, Sept01 :Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Sunday attacked Congress, the National Conference, and the Peoples Democratic Party for exploiting the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“The Prime Minister said that he will conduct the elections. So, he is doing that. The announcement of the elections has been done democratically…The nepotist parties and leaders like Congress, Farooq Abdullah, and Mehbooba Mufti have exploited the people of J-K,” Giriraj Singh told reporters on Sunday.
“PM NarendraModi established democracy by conducting elections of panchayats, and now VidhanSabha elections are going to be held,” he added.
Polling in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, as announced by the Election Commission of India. The votes will be counted on October 8.
J-K has 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 9 for Scheduled Tribes (STs).
According to the Election Commission of India, J-K has 88.06 lakh eligible electors.
In the previous Assembly elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, BJP secured 25, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference won 15, and Congress won 12.
The PDP and BJP formed a coalition government led by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. However, in 2018, the BJP withdrew its support after Mehbooba Mufti took over following Mufti Mohammed Sayeed’s demise.
These upcoming elections will be the first in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370. (ANI)
