Special all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have been deployed in Chasoti village, Kishtwar, to assist rescue operations after the devastating August 14 flash flood, which has so far claimed 61 lives.
The powerful vehicles, with a capacity of 1,200 kg, are being used to access remote, mud-covered, and buried sites where survivors may still be trapped. “These vehicles can move in any terrain and weather… many people are buried here, and some have been rescued,” said Jaipal Singh, Head of Production.
Over 450 personnel from the Indian Army, CISF, CRPF, BRO, SDRF, NDRF, police, and local administration are jointly engaged in the operation. 116 people have been rescued so far, confirmed J&K Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, who emphasised the scale of the multi-agency effort.
CISF DIG MK Yadav said rescue work is ongoing with teams using JCB machines and specialised equipment. “We are hopeful of saving more people… the situation is better than before,” he added.
Authorities continue to prioritise locating missing persons, even as difficult terrain and heavy debris complicate the mission.
