Army Chief Says Terrorism Nearly Wiped Out in Jammu and Kashmir as Tourism and Peace Return

The security situation along India’s western front and in Jammu and Kashmir remains sensitive but fully under control, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi said on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, General Dwivedi said that since May 10, the overall security environment has been managed effectively through close coordination between security forces and support from civil authorities.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

He said that in 2025, security forces eliminated 31 terrorists, with around 65 per cent identified as Pakistani nationals. The Army Chief confirmed that the three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack were neutralised during Operation Mahadev.

According to General Dwivedi, the number of active local terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir has now dropped to single digits. Local recruitment, he said, is almost non-existent, with only two such cases reported this year.

“These figures clearly show a positive shift in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, adding that development work, a revival of tourism, and the peaceful conduct of the Sri Amarnath Yatra reflect improving ground conditions.

He noted that more than four lakh devotees participated in the Amarnath pilgrimage this year, which is higher than the average of the past five years. “The transition from terrorism to tourism is slowly becoming a reality,” he said.

On military operations, General Dwivedi highlighted Operation Sindoor as a strong example of coordination between the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He said the operation was carried out under clear political direction, with full freedom given to the forces to act when required.

“Operation Sindoor is still ongoing, and any future misadventure will be dealt with firmly,” he warned.

The Army Chief also praised the role of multiple agencies in maintaining peace. He said cooperation between the armed forces, Central Armed Police Forces, intelligence agencies, state administration, and civic bodies has been crucial.

“I acknowledge the proactive role played by all stakeholders, including CAPFs, intelligence agencies, the state administration, and ministries such as Home Affairs and Railways,” he said.

General Dwivedi added that sustained coordination and constant vigilance will remain essential to ensuring long-term peace and security in the region.
