Security forces continued their joint operation in the Akhal Devsar area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday, where a fierce gunbattle with terrorists broke out overnight. So far, one terrorist has been neutralised.
The encounter, which began late Friday night, is part of an ongoing counter-terror operation led by the Indian Army in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Special Operations Group (SOG).
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Chinar Corps of the Indian Army stated:
“OP AKHAL, Kulgam: Intermittent and intense firefight continued through the night. Alert troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the noose while maintaining contact. One terrorist has been neutralised by the security forces so far. Operation continues.”
Sources confirmed that the encounter began after security forces received intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the Akhal area. A cordon-and-search operation was launched, during which the terrorists opened fire, triggering the gunfight.
Meanwhile, another encounter was reported along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch sector on July 30. Troops from the Army’s White Knight Corps detected suspicious movement of two individuals near the border fence and challenged them.
Upon being confronted, the suspects opened fire at the troops, prompting immediate retaliation. In a statement posted on X, White Knight Corps said:
“Contact with terrorists. Suspected movement of two individuals was observed by own troops along the fence in gen area of Poonch Sector. Gunfire exchanged.”
As of now, the operation in Kulgam is still underway with heightened alert in the region. Security forces continue combing operations to eliminate any remaining threats. Further details are awaited.
