Mehbooba Mufti Backs A R Rahman, Criticises Javed Akhtar Over Bollywood Communalisation Remarks

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday said that lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar was contradicting the lived realities of Indian Muslims by dismissing concerns raised by music maestro A R Rahman about the alleged communalisation of Bollywood.

In a post on X, Mehbooba Mufti said that when Javed Akhtar downplays Rahman’s concerns, he ignores the shared experiences of Indian Muslims, including those within his own family. She referred to Akhtar’s wife, Shabana Azmi, who has earlier spoken publicly about being denied housing because she is Muslim, even in a cosmopolitan city like Mumbai.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

“When Javed Akhtar dismisses A R Rahman’s concerns about the growing communalisation of Bollywood, he contradicts the lived and shared realities of Indian Muslims,” Mufti said. She added that such experiences cannot simply be brushed aside.

According to media reports, Javed Akhtar had said there was no communal angle behind A R Rahman allegedly receiving fewer work opportunities in Bollywood.

Responding to this, Mehbooba Mufti said Bollywood has historically reflected the social realities of the country. “Bollywood has always been a living mini-India. Ignoring these experiences does not change the truth about today’s India,” the former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir said.
