Sonzal Welfare Trust hosted a landmark event in Srinagar on Sunday to launch the highly anticipated book, “Unlocking Closet: Lived Experiences of LGB Kashmiri Muslims,” authored by Dr. Aijaz Ahmad Bund.

The book offers a profound exploration of the lives, struggles, and resilience of LGBTQ+ individuals within the Muslim community in Kashmir, shedding light on a subject that has long been underrepresented in both academic and social discourse.

The event was attended by a diverse group of academics, activists, students, and members of the LGBTQ+ community, marking a significant step forward in the conversation about gender and sexual diversity in the region.

The ceremony began with a recitation from the Quran, followed by a welcome address by the Chairperson of Sonzal Welfare Trust, who underscored the organization’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and amplifying marginalized voices.

The book was officially released by a distinguished panel of dignitaries, including Dr. Monisa Qadri, Senior Assistant Professor and HOD of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Dr. Mudasir, Clinical Psychologist at the Drug De-addiction Centre in Anantnag, Anam, Doctoral Scholar at the Department of Law, Central University of Kashmir, Feroz, Developmental Practitioner in the field of Gender, and Bablu ji, a prominent transgender leader. Poets and fiction writers from the Fiction Writers Guild, including Manzoor Ah. Kant Sahab, also contributed by presenting poems on gender and sexual minorities. Students and scholars from the University of Kashmir, Central University, and IUST also attended the event.

The book review was presented by renowned literary critic and development practitioner, Manzoor Ahmad Yatoo, who commended the book for its insightful and comprehensive approach to an often ignored subject.

Dr. Aijaz Ahmad Bund, a well-known social worker and researcher, shared his personal journey of writing the book. He stressed the importance of providing a safe space for Kashmiri LGBTQ+ individuals to share their experiences, thus giving voice to the societal pressures, discrimination, and resilience they face. “This book is not just about struggles; it is a testament to courage and the human spirit’s ability to thrive against odds,” Dr. Bund said, highlighting the book’s central message of resilience.

Excerpts from the book were read aloud during the event, moving the audience deeply. The narratives presented an intricate intersection of faith, culture, and identity, offering a rare and nuanced perspective on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ Muslims in a conservative society.

Following the book launch, a panel discussion was held, featuring experts who discussed the necessity of dialogue, policy reforms, and greater societal acceptance to ensure the dignity and rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Kashmir. The panelists underscored the importance of creating an inclusive environment where people of all identities could live freely and authentically.

The event concluded with an interactive session, during which attendees had the opportunity to engage with Dr. Bund and the panelists.
