The march was led by Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, alongside Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other opposition leaders. The protest focused on the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists and allegations that eligible voters had been removed from electoral rolls.
Opposition Leaders File Petition in Supreme Court
Rahul Gandhi and 10 other opposition leaders filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission’s handling of the SIR exercise. The petition raises concerns about alleged voter deletions and irregularities in the electoral revision process.
The INDIA bloc leaders are seeking action over their concerns about the fairness and transparency of voter registration. The full details of the petition were not immediately available in the initial reports.
The opposition has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a halt to the SIR exercise and action to address alleged wrongful deletions from voter lists.
Rahul Gandhi, Kharge and Other Leaders Join March
Several prominent opposition figures took part in the march, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, along with members of Parliament from other opposition parties.
The march attracted national attention after Batman masks appeared among the protesters. Youth Congress workers distributed the masks, and Rahul Gandhi was photographed with one. He was also seen helping Kharge try on a mask, creating a widely shared moment during the demonstration.
Heavy Security and Metro Restrictions in Delhi
Authorities imposed security measures and traffic restrictions in parts of central Delhi ahead of the march. Several metro stations were temporarily closed, affecting commuters in the area.
Police barricades restricted the movement of protesters as opposition leaders and supporters proceeded towards the Supreme Court. The demonstration formed part of a wider political dispute over the SIR process and allegations concerning the deletion of voters’ names.
BJP and Election Commission Reject Opposition’s Claims
The BJP has criticised the opposition’s campaign, describing its actions as politically motivated. The Election Commission has maintained that electoral roll revisions are intended to improve the accuracy of voter lists, including by addressing duplicate or ineligible entries.
The allegations of politically motivated voter deletions remain contested and must be assessed through the relevant legal and electoral processes.
The opposition’s petition marks another stage in the dispute over the SIR exercise. The matter is expected to remain a focus of political and legal debate as questions over voter eligibility, electoral transparency and the Election Commission’s role continue.
