Jammu And Kashmir Flash Floods: 38 Dead Near Vaishno Devi Shrine, Yatra Suspended After Cloudburst

At least 38 people have lost their lives after heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides near the holy Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district. The disaster struck following a powerful cloudburst that unleashed a torrent of water and debris along the pilgrimage route.

Officials said the majority of the casualties occurred near Adhkunwari, a crucial stop on the yatra path. Several others were reported dead in separate incidents of flooding in Doda district. More than 20 people are injured, with many undergoing treatment in hospitals across Jammu.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has announced an immediate suspension of the pilgrimage, citing safety concerns. Thousands of devotees have been halted in Katra and adjoining areas as authorities work to restore order and assess the damage.

Rescue Operations in Full Swing

Rescue teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Army, and local volunteers have been pressed into service. Sniffer dogs, earthmovers, and drones are being used to locate missing persons trapped under debris. Officials fear the toll could rise further as operations continue in the affected terrain.

Record Rainfall and Warnings

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that Jammu region has recorded rainfall nearly seven times above normal since August 23, the highest in over seven decades. A red alert remains in place for Jammu, Reasi, and adjoining districts, with warnings of more heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Infrastructure Hit

The deluge has severely damaged roads, bridges, and telecommunication networks. Train services in parts of Jammu have been disrupted, while several villages remain cut off. Authorities have urged residents living near rivers and hilly areas to move to safer locations.

Leaders Express Grief

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and assured all possible assistance to the victims’ families.

As operations continue, the focus remains on saving lives, restoring connectivity, and ensuring the safe return of stranded devotees.
