Nearly 16000 Pet Cat Bite Cases Reported at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar in One Year

More than 15,983 cases of pet cat bites were reported at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital between March 2025 and March 2026, according to official data accessed by Kashmir News Service.

The cases were registered at the hospital’s Anti-Rabies Clinic, which treats patients coming from different parts of Srinagar as well as other districts of the Kashmir Valley after animal bites.

Hospital officials said the numbers show that a large number of people visit the clinic every month after being bitten or scratched by their pet cats. Most patients come for anti-rabies vaccination and medical check-ups. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Doctors at the hospital explained that even small bites or scratches from pet animals should not be ignored. Such injuries can expose a person to infections and may lead to serious health problems if not treated on time.

Medical staff added that many people arrive at the clinic with minor injuries caused by their own pets. However, they stressed that timely medical treatment is important to prevent complications.

Health experts advised that anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water. After that, they should visit the nearest health centre for proper medical care and post-exposure treatment.

Officials also highlighted the importance of vaccinating pets regularly and being careful while handling animals at home.

They said the Anti-Rabies Clinic at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital continues to treat hundreds of patients every week. Cases are reported from both urban and rural areas.

Medical experts further said that better awareness about responsible pet ownership and quick medical care after animal bites can reduce health risks, including Rabies, which can be fatal once symptoms appear.
