Following an unprecedented security lockdown and mass detentions across the national capital during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests, Delhi Police have begun releasing the vast majority of detained opposition leaders, activists, and citizens. However, a select group of organizers and high-profile figures—most notably CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee—remain in police custody. The sweeping police action was deployed to prevent a planned mobilization at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities and disputes surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Mass Detentions and Gradual Releases
Authorities mounted a massive security grid involving tens of thousands of personnel, the closure of nearly 50 metro stations, and widespread traffic curbs across central Delhi. Estimates indicate that between 3,000 and 6,000 individuals—including prominent leaders like AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and TMC’s Mamata Banerjee—were detained during the day.
While political heavyweights and the vast majority of ordinary supporters have steadily been processed and freed, authorities have kept a strict hold on key organizers.
Key Figures Still Detained
- Abhijeet Dipke: The CJP founder, who was dramatically detained by police personnel who boarded his incoming flight from Mumbai before it could disembark, remains in custody.
- Dhruv Rathee: The prominent digital creator and commentator, who was picked up from Gurugram ahead of the march, is still being held.
- Two Other Associates: Authorities have kept two additional individuals detained, citing ongoing security reviews.
Political Fallout and Next Steps
The heavy-handed response has triggered sharp condemnation from opposition parties, with leaders comparing the preventive arrests and travel blockades to historical emergency measures.
The INDIA bloc has announced plans to challenge the legality of the mass detentions, with regional leaders organizing protests and legal responses. Meanwhile, the CJP maintains that its nationwide campaign will press forward until its leadership is unconditionally released.
