Addressing the Friday congregation at Srinagar’s historic Jamia Masjid, the Mirwaiz said Sheikh-ul-Alam’s poetry, known as shruk, played an important role in enriching and preserving the Kashmiri language.
He urged young people to speak, read and value their mother tongue, saying that protecting Kashmiri was essential to preserving the region’s identity, collective memory and cultural heritage.
Joint Friday Sermons to Focus on Faith
Referring to the inter-state conference of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) held on September 15, the Mirwaiz said a committee had been formed to review the recommendations made by participating religious scholars and develop a plan to implement them.
He said the committee had met during the week to discuss a coordinated programme for taking the recommendations forward.
The Mirwaiz announced that the first joint Friday sermon across mosques, shrines, dargahs and imambargahs would focus on faith (Imaan) on October 16.
He highlighted Sheikh-ul-Alam’s emphasis on faith and the oneness of Allah (Tawhid), noting that these Islamic teachings were deeply reflected in his Kashmiri poetry.
The Mirwaiz said following these teachings in everyday life and dealings with others would be a meaningful tribute to the revered saint.
Mirwaiz Calls for Unity and Respectful Differences
The Mirwaiz stressed that Muslims remained united by their core beliefs despite differences in schools of thought and religious interpretations.
He said a shared foundation of faith could help people approach legitimate religious differences with respect, tolerance and proper Islamic manners rather than allowing them to create hostility or division.
He also emphasised that the minbar-o-mihrab—the mosque pulpit and prayer niche—represented a sacred responsibility and should be used to strengthen faith, promote unity and remind people of their religious and social duties.
Upcoming Sermons to Address Social Challenges
The Mirwaiz said other issues discussed at the MMU conference would be taken up in future Friday sermons as part of a coordinated campaign.
These include:
- Unity within the Muslim Ummah
- Drug abuse
- Suicide and mental health concerns
- Challenges facing young people
- Misuse of social media
- Family disputes
- Environmental responsibilities
The campaign aims to encourage greater public awareness and collective action on these social concerns.
First District-Level Ulema Convention in Bandipora
As part of the MMU conference’s recommendations, the Mirwaiz announced that Bandipora would host the first district-level convention of ulema.
The one-day gathering will discuss local social challenges and explore how religious scholars, mosques and other religious institutions can work together to address them.
He said similar initiatives would later be extended to other districts, with the aim of turning the conference recommendations into practical action through joint sermons, local activities and public awareness programmes.
Next Friday Sermon at Charar-e-Sharief
The Mirwaiz also announced that he would deliver next Friday’s sermon at the revered shrine of Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (R.A.) in Charar-e-Sharief, paying further tribute to the saint’s spiritual legacy and teachings.
