A Historic Milestone Under PM Modi

The development comes under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with officials describing it as a landmark moment nearly 79 years after Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to India.

The service was earlier inaugurated on 6 June 2025 but remained limited to the Katra-Srinagar route for several months. The latest extension now connects Jammu directly with Srinagar for the first time.

Full USBRL Route Now Operational

With this launch, the entire 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is now operational between the two capitals.

The mega rail project, completed over more than two decades, has finally enabled seamless and reliable travel through the region’s challenging terrain.

Officials said this is the first time Kashmir has a dependable, all-weather rail link connecting it with the rest of the country, reducing reliance on roads and flights often affected by bad weather.

Faster Travel and Regular Services

Regular train services will begin from 2 May.

Two train pairs will operate:

  • Train No. 26401/26402: Six days a week (no service on Tuesdays)
  • Train No. 26403/26404: Six days a week (no service on Wednesdays)

The journey will take around 4 hours and 50 minutes, with future plans to reduce travel time to nearly four hours.

Increased Capacity for Passengers

The new Vande Bharat service has been upgraded to 20 coaches, compared to the earlier 8-coach train running between Katra and Srinagar.

Officials said this decision was taken due to increasing passenger demand on the route.

Plans for Further Expansion

Authorities are planning to expand the service further:

  • From Budgam to Jammu
  • From Baramulla to New Delhi

These expansions aim to fully integrate Kashmir with India’s wider railway network.

Major Step in Kashmir Rail Connectivity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the first direct train service between Katra and Srinagar on 6 June 2025. That service is now being extended up to Jammu Tawi Railway Station, giving passengers a longer and more convenient direct route.

This extension is being seen as another important milestone in linking Kashmir with the rest of India through rail.

Journey Through Challenging Terrain

Officials said the modern 20-coach Vande Bharat train will begin its maiden run from Jammu Tawi and travel to Srinagar through some of the most difficult mountain terrain in the region.

At the same time, another train will depart from Srinagar towards Jammu.

Before the official launch, a successful trial run of the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat was carried out from Jammu to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra earlier this week.

The train will cover a total distance of around 267 kilometres.

Railway officials said the service will run six days a week in both directions:

  • Jammu to Srinagar
  • Srinagar to Jammu

There will be no service on Tuesdays.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal said the Vande Bharat train has been built using indigenous technology and offers a world-class travel experience.

“We have come here because Urdu is being removed. The National Conference has attacked the Urdu language. Urdu is a part of our faith, culture, and civilisation… Urdu language is the very soul of our literature and culture.”

“We know that Jammu and Kashmir comprises diverse regions with different mother tongues — whether it is Kashmiri, Gujri, Pahari, or Punjabi — but we all know and understand Urdu. An attack on Urdu is, in essence, an attack on our knowledge, our culture, and our literature.”

Iltija asserted that the move by the NC government is not just administrative but a direct assault on the composite culture and historical identity of the region.

The row erupted after the J&K Revenue Department released draft recruitment rules on April 10, 2026, for various non-gazetted posts in the revenue services, including Patwari, Naib Tehsildar, and Tehsildar. In the new draft, the mandatory requirement of Urdu language proficiency (which existed for decades alongside graduation) has been removed. Only a graduation degree is now listed as the minimum qualification.

Urdu has been the traditional language of administration and revenue records in Jammu and Kashmir since the Dogra era (late 19th century). It remained the link language even after 1947 and was used extensively in land records, court documents, and official communication.

The PDP had earlier strongly opposed the move, describing it as a “deliberate attempt to sideline and erase Urdu from the administrative framework” and “culturally insensitive.” The party demanded immediate withdrawal of the notification.

  • PDP’s Stand: The party, led by Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija Mufti, views the decision as part of a systematic erosion of Kashmir’s linguistic and cultural heritage. Four Family Members Dead

The deceased have been identified as:

  • Abdullah Dokadia, 40
  • Nasreen Dokadia, 35
  • Aisha Dokadia, 16
  • Zainab Dokadia, 13

The family lived in the JJ Marg area of south Mumbai.

What Happened

According to reports, nine relatives gathered at the family home on the night of April 25 and had dinner around 10:30 PM.

The meal reportedly included chicken biryani, also described in some reports as chicken pulav.

Later, after guests left, the four family members allegedly ate watermelon between 1:00 AM and 1:30 AM.

By early morning, all four developed severe symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea and dizziness.

They were rushed to JJ Hospital for treatment.

All Four Died Within Hours

Despite medical efforts, all four family members died within about 24 hours.

Reports said the younger daughter, Zainab, was the first to pass away, while Abdullah Dokadia died last on April 26 night.

Police Probe Underway

Mumbai Police have registered a case and are investigating suspected food poisoning.

Officials noted that other relatives who ate only the biryani did not fall ill.

This has led investigators to examine whether the watermelon may have been contaminated.

Food samples and biological evidence have been sent for chemical and forensic testing.

Shock Across Mumbai

The tragic deaths have shocked residents across Mumbai and raised concerns about food hygiene and safe storage during hot weather.

The service is an extension of the existing Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express and is expected to make travel faster, safer, and more comfortable for passengers.

Grand Launch Ceremony at Jammu Tawi

The first train will be flagged off from Jammu Tawi Railway Station by Ashwini Vaishnaw. He is expected to be joined by Jitendra Singh, Jugal Kishore Sharma and senior railway officials.

The inaugural train is likely to leave Jammu Tawi at around 10:30 AM. It will briefly stop at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station before reaching Srinagar at around 3:05 PM.

Key Features of the New Service

Bigger 20-Coach Train

The Vande Bharat Express will now run with a 20-coach rake, replacing the earlier 8-coach train used on the Katra-Srinagar route. This increase in seats is expected to meet strong demand from tourists, pilgrims, business travellers and local passengers.

Scenic and Fast Journey

The train will cover around 266 to 272 km through the famous Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Passengers will travel through stunning mountain areas, tunnels and the famous Chenab Bridge, known as the world’s highest railway bridge.

All-Weather Travel

The train has been specially prepared for Kashmir’s cold winters and snowfall, helping ensure reliable travel even during difficult weather.

Why This Launch Matters

An earlier launch planned for March 1, 2026 was delayed. Now, after successful trial runs, security checks and final preparations, the service is ready to begin.

The earlier Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat trains started in June 2025 after key parts of the USBRL project were completed. Extending the train to Jammu Tawi now creates a full direct route between Jammu and Srinagar.

Doval Listened Patiently for 90 Minutes

Businessman and educationist Zafar Sareshwala, who led the delegation, said Doval listened carefully to everyone for around one and a half hours before sharing his vision and guidance.

Sareshwala said Doval stressed the importance of harmony among all religions in India.

“India is a ship. We all sail together, or we sink together,” Doval reportedly told the group.

Call for Equal Opportunities

Sareshwala described the meeting as a positive step and said the group asked for a level playing field.

He said they requested that Muslims should neither face discrimination nor receive any special treatment.

He added that this was only the beginning and such engagement should continue in future.

Who Attended the Meeting

Among those present were business leaders, social figures and professionals including Faruk Patel, Inamulhaq Iraki, Ibrarulhaq Iraki, Juned Shariff, Zaffar Lari, Kausar Jahan and Naima Khatoon.

The group reportedly shared concerns and suggestions regarding education, employment and public discourse.

Journalist Samina Shaikh said she highlighted the support Muslim families give to women’s education and ambition, while also raising concerns about online targeting of Muslims during social media controversies.

She said Doval listened closely and offered possible solutions.

Doval’s Earlier Remarks on Islam in India

In July 2023, Doval said religions had coexisted peacefully in India for centuries. He also noted that Islam holds a unique and respected place in the country, which has the world’s second-largest Muslim population.

Mirwaiz said many people who can afford Hajj postpone it until they believe all worldly responsibilities are completed. He said this is not the right approach.

He stressed that while Umrah carries great reward, Hajj remains an obligatory pillar of Islam for those who have the means to perform it.

“Life and death are in the hands of Allah, and no one knows what tomorrow holds,” he said.

Perform Hajj at a Younger Age

He urged people to perform Hajj at a younger age if they can afford it. He explained that Hajj is an act of worship that requires physical effort and is easier to complete when a person has strength and good health.

He warned that delaying Hajj for too long could mean losing the chance altogether.

Mirwaiz appealed to the Muslim community to give proper importance to Hajj and fulfil this important religious duty without unnecessary delay.

Three drug peddlers arrested in Shopian, contraband substances recovered

A woman cricketer linked to the Jammu and Kashmir T20 League, along with her brother and another associate, has been arrested in a sextortion and extortion case by Mumbai Police Crime Branch.

The accused have been identified as Farkhanda Aziz Khan (30), her brother Bazil Aziz Khan (27), and their associate Uddin Imtiyaz Wani (22).

Mumbai Businessman Filed Complaint

Police sources said the complainant is a 28-year-old businessman from Mumbai. In 2024, he reportedly came into contact with Farkhanda Aziz Khan. Over time, they began speaking regularly and chatting often.

During these conversations, police claim the woman started sending explicit messages. Later, she allegedly introduced the businessman to her brother Bazil Khan and their associate Uddin Wani.

Money Demands and Threats

Investigators said the woman later demanded money, saying she had financial problems.

When the businessman refused, she allegedly threatened to make their private chats public. Fearing damage to his reputation, the victim reportedly transferred Rs 23.61 lakh through 32 bank transactions between April 30, 2024, and January 13, 2026.

Police also found that a large part of the money was later moved to Uddin Wani’s bank account. Some money was also sent to the account of her father, Abdul Aziz Khan.

More Threats for Additional Money

Police sources further said Bazil Khan and Uddin Wani also threatened the complainant. They allegedly claimed they had screenshots of chats with Farkhanda and warned that if he did not pay, they would send him to jail.

Because of these threats, the businessman reportedly transferred another Rs 40 lakh in January 2026.

Investigators said the first payment in the case was made in April 2024 and was Rs 20,000.

Where the Accused Are From

Police said Farkhanda is a resident of Ankur Vihar in Delhi-NCR. Uddin Wani is from Khalapur in Jammu and Kashmir, while Bazil Khan belongs to Nurkhaw village in Jammu and Kashmir.

FIR Registered

An FIR has been registered at the West Region Cyber Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.

Police are now investigating whether the accused targeted other victims and how the extorted money was spent.

Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday strongly criticised the National Conference-led government headed by Omar Abdullah, saying it had failed the people despite receiving strong public support.

Speaking at a party convention in Baramulla, the Peoples Democratic Party president said young people in Jammu and Kashmir are facing an uncertain future because of unemployment.

She said many educated and deserving youths remain without jobs, creating deep worry among families. She also claimed that some young people are turning to drug addiction because of stress and frustration.

Questions Over Power Promises

Mufti accused the government of failing to keep its promise of giving 200 units of free electricity to households.

She said instead of helping local people, power projects were being handed over to outsiders while promises to residents remained incomplete.

Public Stress and Social Concerns

Referring to her outreach campaign called Kath Baat, Mufti said she met people across Kashmir and found widespread stress and anxiety.

She claimed many citizens feel troubled and under pressure in daily life. She also alleged that even religious leaders were being asked to check sermons before delivering them in mosques.

Mufti further said Mohalla Committees were unable to continue rehabilitation and social welfare programmes because of alleged pressure from agencies.

Sikh Community Needs Support

Speaking about the Sikh community of Kashmir, Mufti said they have always stood with the people of Kashmir but have not received enough support packages. She said the community deserves more attention and help.

Defence of PDP-BJP Alliance

Responding to criticism over the PDP’s past alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party, Mufti said her party never compromised on the rights of the people.

She added that during the PDP government, several confidence-building steps were taken, including reopening the Srinagar–Muzaffarabad Trade Route.

Mufti said the route is now closed due to drug smuggling concerns, which has hurt traders and fruit growers.

Fruit Growers Facing Problems

She also raised concerns for fruit growers, saying trucks carrying produce stay stranded for weeks on the Srinagar-Jammu Highway, while traffic is cleared quickly during pilgrimage movements.

Call for Hope

Ending her speech, Mufti urged people not to lose hope. She said difficult times do not last forever and justice will one day prevail.

Officials said each consignment weighed around 500 tonnes.The shipment included toned milk, milk powder, buttermilk, lassi, and other dairy items.Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal called it a proud and historic moment for the entire Union Territory.

He said the initiative was launched to benefit local traders and families by ensuring round-the-clock supply of fresh milk in Jammu city and nearby districts.Singhal added that direct rail transport would reduce both cost and delivery time compared to road transport, helping markets and consumers.

This development comes a few months after the first rail consignment of 1,350 tonnes of industrial salt reached Anantnag from Kharaghoda in October 2025.Officials said the move shows Indian Railways commitment to supplying essential goods to remote areas and strengthening trade links between Gujarat’s dairy sector and Kashmir markets.

Heroic Sacrifice During Attack

The terror attack took place on April 22, 2025, in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam when gunmen opened fire on tourists.

Adil Shah, a 30-year-old pony operator, was helping a tourist at the time. Reports said he bravely tried to snatch a rifle from one of the attackers to save tourists and allow people to escape.He was shot dead during the act of courage. He was the only local resident killed in the attack that claimed 26 lives.

Promise Fulfilled After One Year

Moved by the family’s condition, Eknath Shinde had earlier promised to build a permanent house for them. He had also provided financial help of ₹5 lakh.On April 21, 2026, the new house was handed over in Hapatnar village near Aishmuqam.

The handover ceremony was attended by Maharashtra ministers Sanjay Shirsat and Yogesh Kadam, while Shinde joined virtually.

House Named in Tribute

The house has been named Anand Nath Bhavan in memory of Shinde’s late mentor Anand Dighe.

Family members said the house includes necessary furnishings and was built as a mark of respect for Adil’s sacrifice.

Family Expresses Gratitude

Adil’s father, Syed Haider Shah, thanked those who supported the family.He said they had no words to express gratitude and remembered how leaders stood with them in difficult times.At the same time, he said no support can remove the pain of losing a son.

More Support for the Family

The Jammu and Kashmir administration also gave a permanent government job to Adil’s wife, Gulnaz Akhter.His younger brother also reportedly received employment support.In January 2026, Adil Shah was among those honoured by the government for bravery.

Family members said Adil helped people without seeing religion or identity, showing that humanity comes first. His courage continues to be remembered across Kashmir and beyond.
